There has been a lot of talk about the possibility of Bacary Sagna leaving Arsenal at the end of the season. Since he returned from his injury lay off in October, the 29-year old right back has not rediscovered the form that made Arsene Wenger describe him as the best right back in the Premier league.
After a few games, Gooners started to think that his heart was not in it. With talks about a new contract remaining unresolved, it seemed as if the French international had decided to move on, with PSG being linked with a move for him. The strange thing is, that Wenger would keep selecting him over Carl Jenkinson if he wasn’t giving his all. Sagna spoke yesterday about his form, and admitted his frustration at not playing well, but declared that he was trying his best.
“I’m not very happy with myself, but it’s football. It’s a part where I need to get better. I’ve been working since last summer, but I need to work more because I’ve been out a long time.
“I didn’t really have a pre-season but at a high level you don’t have time to breathe. You have a game every three days and have to keep coming. I’m looking forward to coming back to my best.
“It’s a bit of everything. When you don’t perform as you used to when you’ve been injured so long, you need your confidence back. That’s been a bit low recently.
“I’m a professional so I know it can happen, but not for too long. Everyone is waiting for me to perform well, so I’m looking forward to doing it.”
So it is clear that Wenger is sticking with Sagna, giving him chance to find some form, or a spark that will kick him off. He did the same with Aaron Ramsey, and it drove the Arsenal fans crazy, but Le Prof was proved right in the end. He obviously thinks Sagna is trying hard or he would not play him. Let’s just hope that Sagna gets his groove back as soon as possible.
I don’t think that he should play as an emergency centre back, because his lack of confidence could lead to mistakes that would hurt Arsenal and further damage his return to form. One good performance from him, and we could have the old Sagna back.
