Which ex-Arsenal player should take over from Wenger?

Arsene Wenger has seen many thousands of successful and unsuccessful Arsenal players come through their careers and many of them have gone on to be coaches or managers after their playing careers were over. The most notable of course are Tony Adams, Thierry Henry, Denis Bergkamp, Marc Overmars, and the latest to be linked with replacing Wenger is Patrick Vieira.

When asked about Vieira as a possible successor, Wenger said: “He’s a guy who has the potential one day, yes,”

“He works in the moment in New York and he works for Man City. I’ve followed his managerial career. I think he does very well. But overall, after that, this Premier League is special, you know.

“You have to come in. There are plenty of former players who played here who have potential and the intelligence and the knowledge to do it. So there’s plenty of choice, don’t worry about that.”

Vieira is definitely gaining experience, and Henry himself is assistant manager with the Belgium national side has also been linked to take over and has said he could not turn down the chance. Wenger has been thought to favour Mikel Arteta who is working under Pep Guardiola right now, but which other ex-Arsenal players could come in?

Adams is considered to be a failure as coach despite his great leadership skills on the pitch, but Overmars and Bergkamp both had successful spells at Ajax before being sacked recently. Giovanni van Bronckhorst has been the boss at Feyenoord since 2015 and has won an Eredvisie with the club. Remi Garde won the French Cup with Lyon before failing miserably at Aston Villa.

So I think Henry and Vieira should be the favourites, but who would you choose?

  1. None, i don’t think any of them are ready. Some of them will be good as assistant or coaches but not the manager, they need more experience and success away from arsenal before coming in. Remember that our situation is different from barcelona and real madrid where they got formal players to manage them in guadiola and zidane. We need complete overhaul of the coaching staff, wenger, bould and his cohorts should all pack their bags and leave.

  2. Arteta, because he has been learning directly from Guardiola. He also played under the failing old Wenger and Moyes, so he should know what made those managers failed and what made Guardiola successful

Vieira, Henry, Bergkamp and Van Bronckhorst played under the successful younger Wenger, so they would not know what made Wenger struggle recently. If one of them becomes Arsenal manager, he might just copy the Invincible system, which is already obsolete for the current Premier League (Wenger is the example)

Arteta is also a La Masia graduate, which system still works very well in La Liga and Champions League. He could set a great system like La Masia in the long run, if given the chance to manage Arsenal for several years

    1. I disagree, i don’t see Arteta bringing any change needed to these bunch of players. We need someone to light a fire under their asses as they are too comfortable. Arteta might have learnt a lot tactically over the years but can he be aggressive with the players for them to improve, i just think he will be too nice since he was one if them before. We need a disciplinarian like Allegri who is also a brilliant tactitian as well. We need accountability for the players, a firm hand, something that has been lost for many years under wenger.

      1. Your point about lighting up their asses is solid, because we have seen how these spoilt kids played half-heartedly under cold and rainy weather in Wembley

Besides, it seems Tuchel has been appointed as Wenger’s successor

      2. I don’t know how true this is as it was just another article somewhere… but I did read that the players do not want Arteta.

If that is true then we got to listen to the players, we want them to perform so we kinda need to get a coach they can respect and if they do not respect Arteta then why get him?

    2. Vieira has seen Pep to learn from him, he has gone to see Sarri and learnt from him, he has seen a few managers to learn from.

You saying he might just copy the invincible team but from what I have read he doesn’t, he has his own mind and players have apparently noticed how Vieira was influenced by Pep in his training. Training is more competitive and I read that Vieira puts a CM against a CM and the ‘winner’ in training gets the nod to start, enforcing that winning mentality in training.

Oh and to say Arteta played under a failing Moyes is silly, Moyes needed to be successful to fail, he had YEARS and never got Everton as a steady UCL team, Moyes was never a winner and UTD experiment failed for obvious reasons.

    1. I aint a fan of CA, he is a cup manager in my opinion.
If we want to compete in the EPL then… I don’t know, I do not trust CA is the man to make us a real force in the EPL.

We might win a few FA Cups…

Chavski spent over 150 million euro for CA to win the EPL and they fin 1 point above UTD while having a worse def record, great attacking record though…

That was over 150 million 8-9 years ago… With inflation… What would it be now?

Lets not forget that he was the manager who ruined Torres, the guy who was banging goals for fun and went to CA Chavski and flopped. Big money flop wasn’t it?

CA only spent about 300 million euro with RM.

About 175 million euro at BM (1 year and 3 months – sacked)
Pep spent about 184 million euros at BM (3 years – left on own accord)

Talk about a manager that needs to spend XD

  4. It’s not as though they would do any worse. Wenger is out of date and just protecting his interest rather than working for the club.

  5. Arsene Wenger has announced he’s leaving at the end of the season, so the search fro a new manager starts now, (unless it’s already been done).

Can we now get behind the team as one, and stop all the bitching. Let’s also give him a great send off.

  6. Thierry Henry is the one I think can give us the new strength we need, sorry am just blabbing. I have wanted Wenger to go but now I feel really unhappy. I will miss him

  7. He will leave, so this season is the best season, after a decade of Wenger bashings!

Now I hope all players would do their best to get the EL trophy and I wish all fans would support Wenger 100%. To honour the greatest Arsenal manager ever!

  8. Great news … Surely players need to focus on athletico now and prove their worth to whoever is coming in … What better way than giving all to get back in to CL by winning this trophy and giving Wenger a decent send off which even his detractors like me would want to see happen

  9. Love the guy. Will miss him. But the club needs change now. So good decision. Would have loved to see him here another season if we qualify for champions league to give him one last bite. But he’s going. We have to accept. Thank u Mr Wenger, despite recent results, you are still a major factor for Arsenal being a major club today. Wish u well and hope Arsenal get a manager that will make a positive impact.

  10. After a long time I am commenting. I would say Ancelotti with Henry as assistant can be good for 2-3 years to stabilize the squad and then making Henry as manager makes sense. Titi is very demanding and wants 100% from all the players and last but not least Henry has Arsenal DNA and a legend.

  11. For the feels I would have Vieira as manager and TH14 as assistant.

My brain though is telling me we should look at someone like Enrique as manager, people claim he lived of Peps team but the 2 managers that followed Pep didn’t win everything because the team was so great.

I do predict that we will spend big in this summer window, I have been saying that Gazidis has minimized the net spend in preparation, he got one piece of the transfer puzzle with Sanllehi who has proven to be able to get some of the best players… with money. Sven was another piece and the last piece is a manager who Gazidis can trust in which will happen at the end of the season.

  12. Best news I’ve read in a long time. YES! My shortlist would be: Jardim, Ancelotti, Low, Simeone, Tuchel.

  13. Soccer is a motivational sport so in essence Henry should do the trick as he is well known among players so perhaps as an attacking coach but need a defensive coach could Vieira do it ???
Henry as a pundit he analysis the game and knows all about the premier league so theoretically he should be fine could Vieira and Henry do the job ? I would say they could
Though the irony sits at not wining an away match in 2018 what can be done to the team to become a serious contender ? We leaked a lot of goals 45 we lost 11 games and drew 6 that is 17 games down …so we will need to fix the defense the midfield and attack so the minimum required is 4 players preferably 5 that could mount any thing between 150 – 250 million
Can a new Manger coup with the same players and achieve better results without investing ?

  14. News from internal source, Arsene Wenger will be Chelsea manager next season. I will love to see the match.

  15. First of all, I think it is time, the managerial position at Arsenal is “normalized”, and by that I mean, the manager has his job as long as he produces the results (in sporting terms).
Of course a new manager should be given a chance to rebuild, and thus treated with some patience in the beginning. But after that – get the results or get out. There is no top club in Europe with a manger, who isn’t under this kind of pressure, and we should have the same.
In my opinion, the choice of manager should then be decided solely on, who the owners/management think can produce the results.
If having played for Arsenal becomes a criteria, we increase the risk of getting a manager, who can’t do the job.
