Should Arsenal let Calum Chambers go?

The defender Calum Chambers joined Arsenal with great fanfare when he left Southampton, but depite his great promise he rarely managed to hold down a regular place in the Gunners first team.

He gained accolades on loan at Middlesbrough two seasons ago, but again when brought back to the Arsenal last season, he only started 12 League matches as cover for Mustafi and Koscielny. Now that it is obvious that Unai Emery is making big defensive changes with the arrivals of Stephan Lichtsteiner and Sokratis, and the possibility of Calgar Soyuncu also seeming very probable. So could Chambers find himself even further down the pecking order after 4 seasons at Arsenal?

According to Sky News our neighbours Fulham are looking to take him across London to give him regular football. They reported: Fulham have reignited their interest in Arsenal defender Calum Chambers, according to Sky sources.

The 23-year-old was one of their top targets last summer along with his then Gunners team-mate Lucas Perez, who returned to Deportivo La Coruna.

Chambers is high on their list again this summer as the Whites look to build a squad that can survive in the Premier League next season.

So do you think it is time to give up on Chambers? He is still only 23 so he could still improve considerably, so should he kept as a backup option until then?

  1. are we actually going to have any ‘homegrown’ players left? haha

at least AMN just signed a new deal! that kid has got it for sure!

    1. We need more English players to be first team players, AMN and Nelson could be the ones

      1. Agreed gooner AMN is looking like a beast of a player ,one that I would happily see in the centre of our midfield in this coming up season ,kids got it all and with a really good partner next to him I think he could become anything tbh .regrding chambers I personally don’t think he’s got what we have been looking for for years ,he’s been with us long enough for us to see he just isn’t good enough ,maybe back up but that’s it .i don’t want to see a player in the team just because he’s from a certain country ,even though I know we need the right amount of homegrown players

  2. Sell Mustafi as he’s shocking, Koscielny probably isn’t back until Dec/Jan, and is pretty much finished anyway, Holding needs to go out on loan, so I think we’ll need Chambers for squad rotation, and possibly even regular first team action. Remember he came on against Atletico, and was our best player (although that wasn’t hard I guess), and does okay most times I see him. He’s currently our best CB, so we really need him.

Also, I am not sure if we need to keep hold of him for the homegrown quota?

  3. If Fulham offer forty millions, Arsenal better replace him with a better CB or DM

Otherwise they better keep him, because he is English, possesses good technical skills, pretty tall, strong and versatile

    1. Unlikely to receive that offer.Likely to be sold to around £16m to £20m.In my opinion I think £16m.

      1. Hey kev…
This is regarding sporting lisbon players cancelling contracts.

I dont understand how players can easily cancel their contracts without paying up for the loss caused for the club.

        How is it possible?

In that case any player can cacel thier contract to join their dream club if possible rather than let their current club hold onto them till a ransom bid comes in.

        Isnt it the case?
        Can someone please enlighten me?

        1. If it is so easy then we can offer players 500k a week wages to convince them to cancel their current contracts and join us on free.

        2. SHEKAR233P…..layers being attacked is a breach of contract terms which stipulates a player under contract should recieve maximum security during the contract period. A player therefore is at liberty to terminate a contract without compensation when any of the terms are breached

        3. They are only able to cancel the contract because the training ground was attacked by its own fans which is clearly a breach of the safety of the players which will like be part of their contracts

  4. Calum Chambers has been with Arsenal for a number of years and he was sent on loan , but still hehas not made the necessary progress to be in Arsenal first team >. Arsenal are hoping under a new manager to sign a number of prominant defenderss so Calum Chambers will have less chancess to play regular first team football . That is why it will be for the interest of him and the club if he moves on and he will get better chance to progress with Fulham.

  5. Bite Fulhams hand. Chambers is not as good. One of our worst players. Release him as soon as possible. We need the cash.

  6. Chambers has improved a hell of a lot recently… not sure if it’s enough though. If Fulham or another team offer a fair bit, I can see him being sold

  7. Chambers was probably our best CB last season when he did play(which was not often enough considering Mustafi’s form). Why sell him now? With Carabao and Europa League matches it’s the ideal opportunity (again) to see how he and Holding are coming through.Theres only so many CB’s we can have in the squad and with Sokratis deal done ( so we are told) and at least one more on the way you can add Mava to the ranks and it looks overloaded. However I would personally like Chambers to stay as he showed good commitment and promise last season.

    1. I agree Phil, if anybody should be sold its
Mustafi. CC is younger, better and helps with
the homegrown quota. However If Fulham are willing to overpay for the Englishmen I do
believe Arsenal will sell and seriously pursue
      Sonyuncu, another midfield player(Seri) or
      a winger(Draxler or Martins)

    1. Grandad, No . Not now. In a year or two he will be worth far more and shrewd judges noticed his fine form at tail end of last season. As a homegrown and young CB, taking your “£15/20 mill” NOW would be little short of idiotic. It is well known that CB’s develop later, as physicality and filling out his frame is an important part of that position. God, even the appalling Mustafi would feth 20/25 mill. THAT must be the very first sale , surely?

      1. ? Even Mustufi may improve under Emery, let alone Callum Chambers. Arsenal need more than 11 players to cope with the game programme, injuries etc.

  8. OT: Maitland-Niles signs new Arsenal deal and he will be wearing the No 15 jersey.

If Wenger was really good , he’d have gotten a job by now . Lopetegui (current Spain coach)has been appointed Real Madrid boss

  9. Were it not for his strong finish to last season , when he partnered Mavropanos, I would have been relaxed about losing Chambers. But those few games changed everything for me. He showed real signs at last of having learned how to defend. Since we are hardly going to bring the worlds top CB’s here this close season, I say keep Calum. He is only 23 and British and any top club needs four decent CBs, with at least two of those four as top class. As yet we have NO proven top class CB’s at all (I do not count Kos , as I consider his best days well behind him, even when he eventually MAY or may NOT finally return to full fitness). Mustafi is a bad joke , frankly; Holding still raw; Mavropanos looks a possible top player but with far still to go before we can say that for sure. Therefore , until proven better CB’s join , which is still uncertain, it would be crazy to sell a young Brit who looks, at last, to be on his way up.

    1. I’ve also been impressed when Chambers has partnered Mavrop, I have also been impressed when he has partnered Holding, he looks like a leader when partnering another young(ish) CB.

Mavrop 1 poor performance was when he was partnering Holding. I mention this because the previous games alongside Chambers he had done well, well enough to get us excited to see more of him 🙂

Above you said about Mustafi being the 1st sale and I’d agree, although I will admit I do wonder if Emery could cut out his bad parts… But I would be happy to see him sold and keep Chambers.

If we do also get Soyuncu then that is the future set with 4 young (ish) CBs, 2 vying for each position and then add in youths to add depth 😛

Kos will always have a place in my heart but he is ready to retire by the looks of his injuries…
Sokratis is a short term signing, in a year or 2 and he will be the aged player who is struggling for gametime…

I think this may be us looking for the long term, 4 young CBs along with tying AMN down to a new deal, Bellerin being given the number 2 shirt (he is still young)… We’re looking like we might be building quite a young term under the patch signing Sokratis.

  10. We currently only have 12 non-homegrown players, that includes iliev, Martinez, macey Jenkinson wilshire and bramall. So we need to hold on to at least 2 of those to keep our full entitlement of non homegrown.

  11. Even though I think Emery will improve Mustafi I’d rather Arsenal sell him at a loss and keep Chambers. Like others have been saying, he has shown signs of improving, he helps our home grown quota and he’s still young. It’s a no-brainer for me. As an aside, my opinion is that folks are getting waaay too excited about Mavraponas and how quickly he will be ready. It’s Holding all over again – a few good performances at the end of the season and he’s suddenly the next Tony Adams.

    1. Surely is is far nearer the truth to say that no one can know for sure whether or not Mavropanos will be “Holding all over again”. Even Holdings medium term future is uncertain , since he has played both well and poorly for us. Why compare a totally different player to Holding? All they boith have in common is being very young, esp for a CB, as CB’s tend to mature later, when they have filled out their natural frame. Also I have seen no one saying he will be the next Tony Adams; that is pure invention on your part. He has definitely shown strength and committment and at his tender age people are quite entitled to be eager about his short term future. No one can possibly say what his long term future holds. I do agree with you about keeping Chambers , who shows definite improvement and also about selling Mustafi. I consider him to be awful, reckless and arrogant too.

      1. My comment wasn’t meant as a dig against Holding. Out of all our young CBs I am most optimistic about him. And yes, I agree fans should be excited about Mavraponas. The point I was trying to make, perhaps clumsily, is that many are too keen to hand the keys over to a young players after a few good games. Probably speaks more to Mustafi’s ineptitude and Kos age/achilles but still not wise in my view.

    1. Actually it is NOT good money. We paid 16 mill for him from Southampton when he had done nothing special. Since then he has played for England, played many games at a far bigger club than Saints and ended last season as first choice in top two CB’s. Also market fees have increased enormously since we bought him. IF we sell him , and I hope we do not, his value should be around 28-32 mill, given the comments above. 15/20 mill is clearly too little.

  12. Sokratis and Soyuncu first team
Mustafi and Mavropanos on the bench
    Chambers sold
    Holfing loaned

  13. Personally I’d keep him, he did OK when played at CB last season, so as long as he’s not played at RWB or RB I think he will improve more, also a lot of clubs over pay for English players because of the homegrown rule, it would be a steal for any club if we let him go for 15 to 20 mill, if it was us looking for a young English defender we would be told to offer a lot more than that. We’re being told that we are willing to pay 35mill for a young Turkish defender who’s really only played 1 competive season in Germany for a team that finished 15th and we think that’s good business.

  14. I think Holding is much better. Chambers should definitely be sold for his own development in Caglar is bought.

  15. Chambers & Holding are never going to be on a level to play for a top club. Bottom of PL or Championship is their level, so sell!

  16. Iam not sure why Mustafi cops so much flack. If you have a look at his stat’s he was Arsenals and the EPL best performing defensive player last season. Did he makes some mistakes, yes of course. But I attribute that more to the defensive structure than to personal attributes. Playing a high line with no protection and or no pressure on opposing midfielders, is a recipe for disaster that the best CB in the world would have issues with.

  17. Mustafi at £35m is one of Wenger’s worst ever buys and one of the reasons the Arsenal Board decided to dispense with his services.I doubt if we will get more than £15m for Mustafi but he must go.

  18. How could he improve with the last three years of shocking discipline and defensive neglect? I mean, he has been asked to learn from an unfit, poor and naive defence with shocking cover infront… to be honest if the new manager tightens up things and brings in some talent this will be Chambers best chance to really go someplace. .. saying that, a loan to Fulham sounds like a great option for him.
