Should Arsenal stick with Welbeck against CSKA on Thursday?

Arsenal have a massive Europa League game against CSKA Moscow at the Emirates on Thursday but with Aubameyang cup-tied and Lacazette injured we have had to use Danny Welbeck as our sole centre-forward in the two legs against AC Milan. We won the tie comfortably but now that Lacazette has finally come back on to the pitch against Stoke everyone would fully expect the Frenchman to be given the nod against CSKA.

But now Arsene Wenger has revealed that he is not sure that Lacazette will be ready to play for the full 90 minutes which will mean that we have no choice but to stay with Welbeck. When asked about Laca, the Boss said: “He’s still lacking a competitive edge a bit,”

“He has been out for two months, he worked hard.

“He still lacks a fraction maybe. In training he looks sharp. How long can he last in a game? I don’t know.

“He needs one or two more games.”

But when asked if he could still start against CSKA, Wenger replied: “I don’t know. We’ll have to wait a bit to make that decision.”

Welbeck played quite well against Stoke, but as usual he has big trouble putting the ball in the back of the net, so it would be unwise to rely on him for our goals against CSKA, but then again he scored lots earlier in the season so maybe its about time he found his scoring boots again.

Would you prefer a not-quite-fit Lacazette or a fit Welbeck to play on Thursday?

  1. I would take Lacazette in a wheelchair over Welbeck! Welbeck looks like he’s drunk every time I see him play, can barely stay on his feet!

      1. Welbeck for ninety minutes, as he could score with his head

Lacazette for thirty minutes, because he could surprise the opponents with his moves

    1. How could you say something like that to our hero that scored a brace against AC Milan and inspired our team with his relentless pressures in the last FA Cup Final? Welbeck might lose his confidence, which led to his bad first touches lately, but I believe he would bounce back

Lacazette’s first touches, instincts and movements look sharper than both Welbeck and Aubameyang, but he doesn’t look fit enough to start against CSKA Moscow. Welbeck could tire CSKA Moscow players in the first sixty minutes, than Lacazette could punish them with his shots in the last thirty minutes

I hope Wenger would include Maitland-Niles and Nelson to penetrate from the wings. Both kids have great energy that would be boosted by the Emirates stadium

      1. Welbeck: “our hero” . . . “inspired our team” . . . “relentless pressures” . . . ” I believe he would bounce back”!!!???
I’ve been waiting for him to bounce back since Noah was a lad so for crying out loud please stop with your incessant drivel. Once again I hope he proves me wrong but I won’t be holding my breath. Hope Nketitiah’s on the bench.

        1. Welbeck clearly has close family on this site that stick up for him. No other sensible reason for the rubbish certain fans write.

  2. Sorry Admin but “Welbeck did – NOT – play quite well against Stoke.” Welbeck played against Stoke like a jumbo elephant with a lame leg who had been drunk the night before. He has the balance of an old lady with a walking stick. Yes, he tries, God how he tries! but HE IS NOT OF THE QUALITY WE NEED AND THAT, TO PEOPLE WITH NORMAL BRAINS AND EYES THAY WORK PROPERLY, IS BL….NG OBVIOUS!

  3. Welbeck can come good at times during an important game, sometimes it’s accidental, and sometimes he opens space up for others by dragging players towards him. It’s his shooting though, he’s a really bad shot for a striker, an Arsenal striker none the less. He has a bit of an aerial threat which probably wont matter unless a set piece. That’s another thing to consider, how tall is this CSKA team, if they’re mostly a tall team well then they’ll be practicing for an aerial threat, esp being away at home and all. If that’s the case it might be wise to start Danny Kolasinac Xhaka and maybe Elneny only because I fear a Wilshere injury if he plays right after that Sto game, bring Lac and Jack on at half time if it’s not going to plan. If we don’t need to worry about the aerial threat too much, then it’s on the break that they’ll be looking to get at us with. Counter attacking, we’ve improved lately at stopping that a wee bit, our shape helps so long as the Brits get back in support of Xhaka (but it is usually an achilles for us along with high balls into our area) Other than that we should pick our best team, focus on our high tempo game, and just get at them …COYG!!!!

    1. So we have “a high tempo game then”? Would that be much faster than the funerial slow sideways passing one I see every game we play? But then perhaps you wrote your comment back in 2004 and it has only just now been puit on the site!

      1. Come on man, we actually played beautiful football under the likes of van persie, fabregas, nasri, song, eduardo, we only started to play like shi** when we signed giroud

  4. Well I’d rather we didn’t start with Welbz…he’s been awful lately. Lacca came on & changed the game on Sunday…. I’d much rather he started but knowing Arsene he’ll come on as a sub in 70th minute ?

    1. Me too.
      Lacazette looked really good Sunday
Also even though his goal was a penalty. (Which still counts lol) that should give him a little confidence boost
We can always sub him for Welbeck
But i prefer Lacazette to start if he is able to physically

Europa league is our last and only chance and we need to have a good first leg result

  5. It sucks Aubameyang is still cup tied. He never even played in this tournament. Stupid rule.

Welbeck is hardworking and fast but his shooting is poor and we need to score a few goals as its the first match and home match. Moscow will be tough. Every match will be tough. If we were playing wingers than I would be happy with Welbeck starting on the left wing. I think he is better on left wing than striker. Again his finishing is poor

Anyway, start Ozil, Mkhitaryan and Lacazette up front

    OR

Start Welbeck than bring on Lacazette. Again Welbeck is hardworking and fast and does score sometimes ie AC Milan, which is still valuable to us.

But please don’t start Iwobi. Im finished with him. He did well when he first started but very average to put it nicely

  6. ………….Laca
    Ozil……………….Mkhi
    …Xhaka……Rams
    ………..Elneny
    sead…hold…kosc…AMN
    ……….Ospina
