Before Arsenal had completed the stunning signing of Mesut Ozil on transfer deadline day, Arsene Wenger and the club were coming in for plenty of criticism for their perceived failure to do any significant business in the transfer market. A few people were astounded that Arsenal were struggling to bring in their targets, because the English Premier League and being in the Champions League is seen as a big draw. But there is also the attraction of the club being located in one of the most exciting cities in the world, London.
I don’t know whether being in London had any influence on Ozil’s decision to join the Gunners, but he did have a bit of a reputation in some sections of the Spanish media for being a bit of a party animal and a ladies man, as a report in today’s Mirror brings up. The story claims that Real Madrid were concerned about his regular trips to Italy to see a former Miss Venezuela Aida Yespica, (check her and his new girlfriend out at Just Wags News) were leaving him too tired to perform at 100 percent.
However, don’t worry too much, Gooners, because there is a feeling that Real Madrid, who have strong connections to the Spanish media, could be releasing stories designed to appease the Madrid fans who feel that their club has messed up by letting the German star come to the Emirates. He certainly seemed to be performing well enough according to his fantastic creativity and goal assist stats.
Also, the Daily Mail has reported that his current girlfriend, German singer Mandy Capristo, is already house hunting in London, so he won’t have to fly anywhere to see her.
About a year ago, a Spanish tv programme called Futboleros reported that Jose Mourinho was concerned about Ozil’s enjoyment of Madrid’s nightlife, but when you see that Ozil played 52 games for the club last season, it doesn’t appear to have bothered him too much. At the end of the day, it is how Ozil conducts himself on the pitch that Arsenal fans care about, and we will get our first chance to see him at Sunderland next weekend. I can’t wait!
