Southampton v Arsenal review – Wenger can still do the impossible!

The first half was a very cagey affair, with Arsenal not trying to concede and Southampton trying to score! But both teams had a fair amount of time on the ball, but there was no side looking the slightest like being in control.

Arsenal were very patient and were looking like they wanted to tire out their opponents and go for it in the second half, and so it proved. The only big problem for us was that Oxlade-Chamberlain has limped off and we seriously hope it wont be a very bad injury considering how much he has improved this season.

In the second half it was the Alexis Sanchez show and he looked very determined to get the points (Oh how much do i hope he stays next season!) and 15 minutes after the break he totally sent the Southampton defenders the wrong way and slid the ball past Forster. He is now the top scorer in the League!

Sanchez was getting picked on by the Saints but kept going, as he does, but it took the arrival of the much-maligned Olivier Giroud to come on for the last ten minutes and put the game beyond doubt. Sanchez, of course puts the ball in for Ramsey, who still canโ€™t score for Arsenal, but he heads it into Giroud who could not miss after only being on the pitch for three minutes!

Considering we havenโ€™t beaten Southampton at St Marys since the Invincibles in the League this is a massive result. Could Wenger really still get us into the Champions League?

    1. No one forget on Sunday Liverpool face West ham if they win are games mean nothing

  1. Good win. But let’s not get excited. Stoke away and everton home are two very tough games.

  2. Sleepy first half, much improved second. A bit of Sanchez skill is what gave us the match. Still, very lax performances from many of our players, but at least were not playing as poorly as a month ago. Top 4 doesn’t mean anything to me, but a Liverpool slip up puts us back in there, if we win our remaining games. I guess Alexis is MOTM despite a bad first half, but nobody else really did anything wonderful.

      1. get to R16, drop out anyways. Who cares. It would mean something if Wenger were leaving, but he’s not. I’m really not that desperate to watch Arsenal lose 10-2 again. Europa League is actually winnable if we take it seriously, but I doubt we will because Wenger will probably treat it like League Cup.

        1. For now no one knows for sure what is required to make Wenger leave, it could even be that he will leave if we make top4….

You may think you don’t about CL, wait till it starts next season and Arsenal don’t get to feature, I just hope you will come back here and tell us how it feels…..

          1. I’d rather have a real shot at Europa League than do nothing in Champions League. Arsenal treat the competition like they are just happy to be there, when in reality we are one of the bigger spenders in Europe and should be much better. And fat chance Wenger is leaving. Why would he? Already has the new contract on the table and is just waiting for the right opportunity to sign. He’s staying no matter what happens.

  3. Xhaka is proving his critics wrong. He made a few mistakes today but he is definitely playing well in midfield. He’s passing and even chipping in with a few good recovery tackles too. I will definitely be getting his shirt for next season. Top 4 is likely now. COYG

    1. I think Xhaka has unfairly had a hard time from some fans, considering he’s still quite new and getting used to the EPL. I expect him to be very good next season. He has useful qualities that are a bit different to most of his team-mates.

  4. Good win
    Some good performances
    Too.little too late though
If West ham don’t get anything against liverpool it’s done

Big ask. We with this squad have been an embarassment.
It’s gonna be tough when ox and sanchez leave.
    Real.tough

    What could have been

    1. I don’t think Ox will leave – begin to have a sympathy with Wenger on that account, as I always used to be annoyed when the Ox got pulled off, but it looks like he needs to be rested as much as possible. That still doesn’t excuse letting his contract run down…

Forgave AS7 all his losses of the ball, for that goal … that was certainly special. He does look tired though … looked tired over the weekend as well, maybe that’s causing him to lose the ball, and Cech had yet another outstanding match. Ozil is always tetering on the edge – yes he put in some great through balls, but if he put in some extra time in the gym, you feel he could go onto the next level. He undoubtedly has the natural ability and just need the extra strength. Our defence felt solid as well.

  5. For the first time in a long time I took a glance at the EPL table to check if we have a chance of making top four.
Deep inside of me I need top four so badly.
Well done boys. Though boring but a win is okay any day.

    1. Interesting to note that Arsenal have already won as many games as they did last year and scored more goals… for all this talk of needing a striker if you look at the number of goals we have conceded that is where it has been lost ! Chelsea, Spurs and Man Utd all let in far fewer goals than we have… so the odd goal here or there has meant probably 6-8 points plus losing to eg West Brom Watford and Palace is another 9 points…
Wenger cant play for the players and some of our defending has been very poor this year !

  6. – Many of Sanchez’s forward passes were not successful, but finally he scored a good goal.

    – Ozil was standard, no real contribution. Iwobi is better than him. He has to be replaced next season. Arsenal has to keep using him to crank his price up.

    – Ramsey played with good energy, but made heavy touches. Arsenal need a new midfielder with better technique, ball control and passing, like Cazorla. I don’t think this type of midfielder is available in England.

    – Mustafi, Holding, Monreal, Cech and Welbeck played very well.

    – Xhaka is starting to blend in well, maybe because he doesn’t have to defend too much, thanks to the three defender formation.

    – Bellerin was rusty. Chamberlain played much better than him as a wingback. Gibbs was also good.

  7. Great result. Hope we can go on to win our remaining games and hope Chelsea slip somehow ๐Ÿ™‚

            1. @Twig
unfortunately miracles are long gone from surface of hearth. Except for stage-managed miracles, where churches go and hire fake but healthy ‘members’ to feign sickness.

  8. It could still mean nothing, because it is not in our hands, but tell me WHY do we start taking risks, when almost everything is lost? Why didn’t we play well at Palace and West Brom? Would’ve been far away from this mess…

  9. This is definitely a season of broken traditions. scum finishes above Arsenal, Arsenal beats Soton at St.Mary’s first time in 12 or 13 years, Wenger beats Mourinho, Sunderland finally gets relegated. The only troubling thing about it is that, if we stick to that rule, Arsenal won’t qualify for the Champions League. Hope that one doesn’t get broken. But on the bright side, we might actually win a European competition finally, if we play Europa League.

    1. we destroyed Chelsea and kept a clean sheet in our first match against them this season. I’m surprised that wasn’t in your list of broken traditions. That would of been at the top of mine since not beating the big clubs has often been the criticism against us. Chelsea beaten, Manunited beaten, Man City beaten!

  10. Is that a typo from the admin?

Sanchez isn’t the top scorer in the league — a certain Lukaku is.

Good game, that. But it goes to show how low Wenger’s stock has sunk. He’s now a coach good enough to get in the top 4 but not good enough to clinch the title. If we were challenging for the title and this was a win or bust game for Arsenal, I’d have bet my balls that we’d tank.

But because it’s a much-needed win for the top 4, we found a way to win at Soton for the first time in years.

Well, congrats to those gunners who are satisfied with things as they are. It looks like your god is going to get you into the top 4 (again) and sign a new contract.

    1. Everyone goes on about Lukaku, but you wouldn’t see a goal like that from him, AS7 out- thought and out-played three people, Lukaku just normally uses his strength in the box. Still worth 3 points I guess, just nicer to watch.

  11. Excellent win away to S’hampton

I am happy we have a 20 pl goal player finally (25 total goals). Imagine if Wenger had got another top forward and holding midfielder

Now we may lose our 20 PL goal scorer

  12. Another good win but it’s too little too late AGAIN!!!

We only have come alive now the 4th place trophy is in jeopardy. I mean I even saw Ozil Run tonight!

  13. arsenal fans don’t worry Sanchez is not leaving he just wants more quality players around him look at the way he kiss the Arsenal badge when he scored the goal

  14. Allegri to arsenal is still a possibility.
Can’t announce whilst still in the CL ๐Ÿ™‚

  15. Yes!! Now lets fight vs stoke away an get the 3 points!! After that we can talk about shots at top four now we still hve alot to do

  16. Good win against a good team. Our destiny is not in our hands as far as top 4 goes we still have to rely on Liverpool imploding. Shame about Ox, that might come back and haunt us.

So strange we can not fix our injury problems.
