When Kieran Gibbs picked up an injury last season, luckily for Arsenal it gave Arsene Wenger just enough time to bring in a replacement, otherwise the Gunners might have had to rely on the Brazilian Andre Santos. It is not stretching things too much to say that this could have cost Arsenal their place in this season’s Champions League.
Life must seem like a bit of a whirlwind for the new Arsenal left back Nacho Monreal. The 26-year old Spanish international was probably expecting no excitement in the transfer window as he was preparing to join the Gunners in the summer. Then Gibbs’ injury on Wednesday forced Arsene Wenger to bring forward the move, meaning Monreal getting on a flight to London yesterday and just managing to finalise the transfer before the deadline.
Kieran Gibbs is still not ready to play for Arsenal after picking up a thigh problem against West Ham at the start of October. It is a real worry for Arsene Wenger and the Gunners because his stand in, Andre Santos, has been simply dreadful. Gibbs has missed large chunks of his young career, and Wenger may now be considering a move for another left back when the transfer window opens in January.
