John Toral is playing for his Arsenal future

The young Spaniard Jon Toral arrived from Barcelona along with Hector Bellerin back in 2011, and if anything Toral was touted as thec most promising of the two. But Bellerin has now been promoted to the Arsenal frst team, while Toral is also playing first-team football, but with our lowly London neighbours Brentford.

Toral has been plagued with knee injuries, incurring four operations, in his time with the Gunners, but now feels good and is impressing his new bosses across London. His current contract with Arsenal is up for renewal at the end of this season, and Toral is keen to stay fit and impress Arsene Wenger with his form to earn an extension in the summer.

It’s a well-known fact that Arsenal have one of the best youth academies in Europe and although it shouldn’t be confused with the fact that we produce lots of quality players, in fact the majority come through the ranks after joining from another club early in their development.

After watching our U19s go agonisingly close to the Next Generation finals, it’s got me thinking, who would go onto to be first teamers? This has always been a problem for any team in the world. Your youngsters look brilliant for the reserves but then for a multitude of reasons, they rarely make it to the first team squad, let alone to being in the starting XI. I remember looking at the squad of players that won the FA cup in 2009 thinking that we had a very bright future with that lot and now we only have Wilshere and Coquelin left from that lot that are close to the first team.

Arsenal ensured their position in the knockout stages of the NextGen Series after an impressive 4-2 victory over highly-rated Athletic Bilbao at Underhill.

Zak Ansah, Jon Toral and Isaac Hayden all scored in quick succession in the second half to see off the Spaniards in an enthralling clash.

Arsenal took the lead after nine minutes; a well-worked move was finished off by a Sead Hajrovic header.

Bilbao responded instantly, a clumsy challenge in the box from Hayden gave the referee no option but to point to the spot after he brought down Gorka Santamaria.

Once again, the requests have echoed out into the justarsenal cyberspace and hence, they will be answered. This post (and the next) are going to be dedicated to some of the most impressive youngsters who will be emerging onto the scene at Arsenal in a big way. First up, the pair from Spain, Hector Bellerin and Jon Toral; who both signed for the club July 1, 2011.
