The qualities that Arsenal need in Arsene Wenger’s replacement…

What do Arsenal need? by AndersS

As a “Wenger out” supporter for a number of years, I finally start to believ, we are getting close to the day where our recovery can begin. Personally, I think it would be best for all, even for Wenger, if he stopped today, but no matter when it happens it may be time to look into what we need from a new manager. Many names are already being mentioned, and we can all have our favorite(s). But before settling on a name, it might be useful to pinpoint what we actually need.

Here is my “list”:

First of all I think it would be great if we were to get a manager whose job is actually dependent on the football results and not the financial results. This would also mean our next manager is not a “lifetime” manager, but a manager who should be kicked out of the door if our results don’t live up to clear targets. Having said that, I do think he should be met with some patience in the beginning as he is taking over a complete mess, and it can take some time to clean it up.

Secondly, I would like to see a manager who can install some discipline and improved work rate in our players from day one. It seems those 2 basic fundamentals are totally gone after years of “Wenger culture”. Unfortunately, this could be a big shock for many players who have gotten used to the current relaxed strolling around, where they probably are quicker to get to the bank collecting their monthly check than they are chasing an opponent. This shock may even cause discontent and make players wanting to leave. But so be it. We can’t use them in the long run anyway.

Thirdly, I would like to see a manager who can organize the whole team, especially when the opponents have the ball. For me this is the area where we have failed to get in to modern times, and the main reason why we are not competitive. I know some say Arsenal must play offensive football, and I actually agree. But offensive football does not necessarily mean, you shouldn’t organize your whole team to defend. In fact, you can say, that today you aren’t really an offensive football team, if you can’t make your offensive players win back the ball high up on the pitch.

Fourthly, I would like to see a manager who develops our young players with the above in mind. To me it seems we have quite a few talented young players on the verge of the first team, who all look good with the ball, but unfortunately have no or very little discipline, fighting spirit and as good as no ball-winning capability. I really don’t see them becoming stars in the future if this isn’t changed.

It is obvious our players both as individuals and as a team are very low on confidence, and it would be great if a new manager quickly could restore confidence. But it rarely works that way. Confidence comes mostly from knowing you are well prepared, and that will come as a logical step.

Finally, but not a “deal breaker”, I think it would be great if our next manager has charisma and can be the catalyst for smiles, pride and optimism for players, fans and everybody connected to Arsenal FC. How we lack that.

What do you think, are the above what we need? Who can fill the role?

  1. A proper man manager would help. Look how he treated Debuchy, who has now scored 2 goals in 5 games and been nominated for player of the month for February.

      1. tonights agm
lee dixon so far has said:

” I said to Bouldie, ‘you’ve got to sort Bellerin out he’s doing my head in! Why is he making runs ahead of the forwards when there’s no ball on?’
        Bouldie said I’ve told him.
So i said f****** tell him again!”

Wenger’s downfall is that he is not a true coach. Tony Adams turned Ashley Cole into the best left back in the world acting as his coach.

Wenger doesn’t coach the players and doesn’t stop players in training to tell them when they’re doing something wrong – “that’s not his skill-set”. Also says he hasn’t given Steve Bould the freedom he wanted when coaching the team.

“Wenger recruited some great players Kolo Toure, Sol, Henry. But Mustafi? I spoke to Gary Neville who said Valencia couldn’t give him away. Then Arsenal came along and paid £30m for him.”

      2. Almost all our players have got it in them (I dunno about Welbeck tho), the only problem is Wenger ‘coordinating’, and ‘motivating’ them……. It has been evident for a while

  2. Whoever takes over, I’d love for him to –
Make the players fight for their spot in the team
Make them earn their money (for once)
If they’ve played s**t, tell them exactly that
If they haven’t been good enough, drop them

I just want to see passion & fight…. so p****d off with all these gutless performances…….

  3. Sean dyche on a two year deal to sort out all our waste of space players. Let him change the mentality and see where that takes us.

  4. The biggest problem is confidence and consistency ! These players are not shit or gutless as some morons would voice. The training ground is where the consistency comes, repeating plays so much it becomes parrot fashion.Do away with zonal marking and actually pick players up from set pieces. If you lose the ball in a tackle or make a pass that’s intercepted then get back behind the ball. That goes for all midfield and defensive players.Forwards should always look to close down and put opposing back line defenders under pressure .Do not keep making silly triangles between your keeper and back line, this only invites disaster! (I could go on all night).

    1. Also, stop passing back to the keeper and don’t be afraid to launch it into row z if necessary. Get it out wide to both flanks and if you get to the byline, cross the bloody ball into the box or cut it back into the box. Stop passing back to midfield. Make tackles. Stop trying to be flash with back heels and blind passes when you’re 2-0 down, only when 3-0 up. Attackers cover the defence when necessary. Move your arses more, find space, get the ball forward quicker and please stop trying to walk the ball into the net.

  5. We need a fighter as a manager, someone whose ” no quarter given” personality will revitalize the club and the players, because quite frankly we are a cemetery at the moment, where good players come to die.
If we had the right owner and the right board they would do anything to get Simeone from Atletico.
With the board that we have they will probably go for Low, who has minimal success as a club manager. I think it would be a mistake. An improvement to what we have but still not good enough.
If not Simeone, I would go for an Italian manager, Ancelotti, Allegri, Conte, Sarri or go after Jardim from Monaco.

      1. Arsene Out, I agree with your list. Simeone ticks every box. Would the money on offer plus our new Spanish executive be enough to prise him away from Athletico Madrid? Ancellotti and Conte are/will be available, are proven winners and have a point to prove with Chelsea. What Arsenal needs is a disciplinarian, who coaches teams and improves players. Jardim has certainly developed players and both he and Simeone have competed against clubs with greater financial resources. Arsenal’s play without the ball is shambolic and even with the ball has digressed; just look at the possesion statistics versus Brighton!

  6. Need to get a manager that will completely purge all of the Wenger-era softies that has plagued this club for years. The players that turn to complete garbage around Jan-March, who only show up every few games, and don’t have the guts to treat every game like it’s their last. This mentality is why Arsenal is mediocre. Plus the lack of a real coach. Some may laugh at this but we need players that had Giroud’s mentality. He wasn’t the most talented guy, but you knew every game this guy was trying his hardest, even if not everything worked out. Put that determination in there with talented players, and a manager with a clear vision and Arsenal can start going in the right direction again. And as a fanbase we need to be behind the replacement 100% and give him more than one season, cause things won’t turn around in the blink of an eye… Of course this all depends on if AW is even sacked

  7. i just want a manager where i can go out every weekend, to watch my favourite team and genuinely believe we have a chance to win every game.
even against the likes of liverpool, utd, city

a manager who i know even if we lose it is only by conceding 1 goal..maximum 2

    DIEGO PABLO SIMEONE.

    1. I don’t think it will be Simeone, he’s very confrontational, something the board wouldn’t like.

  8. I’ve just heard an interesting theory, it’s that the reason Ozil signed his contract is that it was made known to him that Joachim Low is to replace wenger, (nothing to do with the £350k per week of course).

          1. Definitely not Henry, too nice. If we go ex Gunner Viera would be my choice. Simeone would be my first choice to get some discipline into this bunch of headless chickens and he would sort out the defence. Bye Bye Kos, Mustafi, Cech & Bellerin.

  9. someone young having an emphasis for attaching football and giving their chance to young players….. like the Arsene of 96…..but not until Wenger has decided to go from his own….he’s an Arsenal legend we’r not

    1. he’s paid millions and his time is up. His own fault if he doesn’t get the ending he wants.

      1. He was once the greatest Manager ever but he has lost the plot for a number of years. He needs to step aside now, he can’t motivate this bunch of losers anymore.

    2. So we should let him go on his own, we should let him honor his f**kin contracts that has no end dates.. no we shouldn’t do that, you AKBs just want wenger to stay for life and have no regard for the downfall of our club.. may be we should get rid of wenger and his deluded followers, together they can go form a club and call it Arsene FC, and live happily ever after

      1. you should, bran911 ,create a club and name a manager…or manage it yourself if you can,i wonder, even lead a warm up…right now Wenger is THE manager and love or hate it

      2. Brian I don’t know how old you are but this is yet again another inflammatory comment. For starters EVERY SINGLE Arsenal fan that has been a Gooner for the last 20 years absolutely loved Wenger at sometime or another. So stop telling Arsenal fans to leave. It is not your right to condemn the honest opinion of any Arsenal fan….

  10. 1. Being able to drop players who underperform

Well I couldn’t see Guardiola, Mourinho, Klopp holding on to the likes of Iwobi, Ramsey, Xhaka, Eleny in the starting lineup. So a new manager would be able to drop players when they underperformed and sign better players for the starting lineup

    2. Upgrade positions
Im not saying these players should be sold. We need squad players. Players on the bench. But we need to upgrade positions badly. We need:
    1. Top CB
    2. Top Defensive midfielder
    3. Top box2box
    4. Another Top attacking midfielder or winger

    3. Competition
Competition is needed to keep players on their toes
When Ozil is at his best, he is sublime. Hes wonderful. But how often is that?
    He needs competition.
I thought Mahrez or Draxler would have been perfect. Maybe now it should be Mkhitaryan.
Bellerin needs competition. He has underperformed
Kolsanic v Monreal is good competition

    4. Motivation- Motivate players esp at halftime
    5. Ambition – not Just Top 4

Its difficult to think of things Wenger is actually good at these days???????
    Saving money for Kroenke?

  11. Someone not stupid enough to loan Kallstrom – that is the main quality I want

  12. Fiyah…get rid of all the players who are slackers. Upgrade to top fast hard workers!
