Wenger – Arsenal couldn’t afford to lose today

It was as much a relief for Arsenal fans as much as Arsene Wenger for the team to get back to winning ways after our defeat to Tottenham last week, especially as it came against our hated rival Jose Mourinho. But the fact is that if we want to keep our outside chance of still making the Top Four, then we simply had to win, and we did!

As Wenger said after the game: “It was important because we lost at Tottenham – that didn’t happen many times. Overall, you play Man United and it’s another big game. We couldn’t afford to lose today. In fact, we have recently won at Middlesbrough, we beat Manchester City in the semi-final of the cup, we won against Leicester and today. We had just one blip and I think it was a bit physical. But overall, we look a bit more stable.”

I am still a bit confused why our form dropped so much during February and March considering that we went 20 games unbeaten earlier in the season, but you could see at the beginning of the match we were looking a little nervous. Wenger admitted that the plan was to try and absorb the pressure in the first half. “We needed to be patient.” he said. ”

“I felt that going in at half-time at 0-0 we would have a good chance to win the game. We started a bit nervously, a bit under pressure. Slowly I think we became better and in the second half we controlled the game quite well. The first goal was a bit lucky, the second goal was a great goal. I’m happy for Danny as well. When you play centre forward you know you want goals and so it hopefully gives him confidence.”

Wenger also admitted that he picked Welbeck to start because of his great record against his old side Man United, and even that worked as well! All in all, it was a great day and a great win.

And our hope of getting the Wenger Trophy is still alive, as well as the FA Cup…

  1. The Wenger trophy..

So bloody sad, the fact that a fourth place spot and UCL funds are our only real target and driving force.

A small victory today (although sweet) as it is just one battle
In a war that was lost a long time ago.

    1. You are a embarrassing fans to the club, real fans get behind their team in the good patches and the bad. You are all pathetic. Please do give up your season tickets and go support some other team. You are not wanted near this great club. If you think getting a new manager will immediately change things, just look at man utd. The grass isn’t always greener. This will turn out pretty good. a clearing of the herd is required in the fan base. this will separate the posers who are only interested in arsenal for trophies to brag at their mates and the true supporters who respect and believe in the clubs principles. if i may add, i would make it a 5 year contract instead of two in order to ensure the transition of the next generation the torals the bieliks etc.

      ONE ARSENE WENGER.

  2. We are still 6 points behind Man City and 2 points behind Utd with only 1 game in hand

Honestly, i dont see us getting fourth
Its not impossible but it is highly unlikely

Also, getting fourth will be next to meaningless if we dont get a new manager and the right signings to perform better in Champions League

      1. Fluky gutsy win but you make your own luck. It is time to pull back the curtains and enjoy the brief sunshine of a one-off victory.

Enjoy the win, girl, support the team. Le Prof proofs himself he is still the best.

  3. Man United will win the Euro cup so we will need to be third to go to Europe. It’s never going to happen.

    1. Along with Germany and Spain, England can have 5 teams in the CL.

If Man U win the Europa League, we will have 5 teams in, Man U would go straight into the group stage, and whoever came 4th would be as it is now.

The only way 4th place would miss out, is if Leicester City (or any other club that finishes outside the top four this season) had won the CL, and Man U wins the EL, then whoever finishes in 4th spot in the PL would miss out on CL and drop down to the Europa League.

And yes, it has changed since Spurs missed out on CL when chelsea won it the season before.

  4. just focus on winning every matches left. we still have hope finished in top 4 rank.

  5. A win over Mourinho, A Xhaka shoot, a Welbeck goal against Man Utd, a Happy Sunday evening for me as a gunner. Doesn’t change my stance…

  6. Nce win. To be honest i was sure it was a draw. Am happy with the points and i dont think any arsenal fan will not be happy by a win against man u. So now we go to 5 finals how many can we win? I think if we win all games top four is ours. Lets hope for the best.

  7. Wenger should sign a new deal as the club need stability.

I think after this great win, it should be the best time for arsene to annouce he’s staying.

    Vive Le Prof.
