Wenger – Arsenal were unlucky and Bayern should thank the referee…

Yes last night was a very embarrassing final scoreline for Arsenal, but anyone watching could only wonder at the unbelievable performance of the referee who denied us a penalty which would have given us a 2-0 lead, and then changed a yellow for Koscielny into a red under instructions from another official.

That effectively killed our hopes, although I’m under no illusion that we could have won if we still had 11 men on the field. Arsene Wenger made his anger clear in his after-match interview. He said: “I felt that we produced a performance with the spirit and the pride that we wanted. After that the story finishes badly. Personally, I would say that we really put Bayern under pressure and that we were really unlucky tonight because it was 100 per cent a penalty in the first half after the foul on Walcott. I checked it on television.

“In the second half, the referee killed the game. After that, it was very difficult but the referee was very, very powerful for Bayern tonight. At that moment in the game, not only was it not a penalty, but Lewandowski was offside. On top of that, he gave us a red card and that killed us completely. Overall I must say that Bayern are a good side, but tonight they can also say thank you to the decisions of the referee in the second half.

“It leaves me very angry, very frustrated and, because we are in a difficult period, it hurts even more. It’s absolutely unexplainable and scandalous. You look at what really happened, and the guy behind the line gives the penalty and the red card when the referee had given a yellow. Okay we have to take it on the chin and I have to stand up for it, and I will take a lot of criticism, but it doesn’t change my mind. We have to deal with these kinds of situations in this game but that doesn’t make them right.”

This is not the first time that Arsenal have collapsed after losing Koscielny, so Wenger was then asked if it meant that the Gunners can’t compete without their captain on the field and the defence falls apart, and he effectively dodged the question by replying: “It’s difficult when you have to go forward and score goals. You have a deficit of four goals and you’re down to 10 men. If you go forward you can be caught on the counter-attack but if you don’t go forward then people will say, ‘Why did you not at least try to score goals?’ so it’s a difficult situation. It’s an impossible situation.”

I guess it was “mission impossible” from the start to try and win by 4 clear goals against the German giants, and it was made even harder when we had 10 players and Bayern had 12, but to lose 3 games in a row to the same team by the same embarrassing scoreline is not exactly a sign of progress….

      1. his only downfall is his final touch on target otherwise his everything we want, i’m sure with the right trainer he can correct this only fault in his game

  1. The trinity of evil kroenke, gazidis and wenger are dragging the club through the mud.
For a start we need to put wenger the lunatic in a straight jacket and ship him off to the nearest asylum.

  2. Well what else could he hve said? The score hurt the most. We hve so many revenge that we need to payback. Barca, bayern, man u ,chelsea . thos teams hve raped us. I hope a day comes when we are the ones raping them. Sad but its 3 games in a row where tears filled my eyes looking at the state of our club. Sure we all love top four and ucl but someone asked me why get in ucl and get embarrassed you dont get tired?
We need to take a stance now. Pple blame wenger ,pple say wenger is okay, then the problem is us!
Our lack of unity has brought this day to our club. Cmone we hve also divided the fan base as akb or aob. What and how will a club win when there own fans are divided. I love wenger alot i even felt pity for him yesterday but i love arsenal the most and to me i feel its time that he moves on. For his own sake and ours. We need our fanbase to sing at one voice again.pple say players hve to take responsibility, true but who is the one asserting that authority?

  4. i have to agree up to a point, it look like we was playing and closing down Bayern well first half but as we all know Bayern had a four goal lead they didn’t need to break sweet

off topic= as much as i like Sanchez but now he is a liability for us, he has to go his disrespecting the club and causing mayhem with the players and supporters and yes with the manager too,

i know its bad of me but i sort of don’t care if we are not in the top four this season i just want some good decisions made by the board by getting a strong manager and a leader in the squad,

we need to put the blame back on to the players shoulders again with Arsen there getting all the blame players get of Scott free, i ask you if we had Ibrahimovic in the team what would happen???? i’m not suggesting we get him but someone like him a leader which all the players respect but our current manager will feel threatened by such players with strong characters.

    1. i am overseas at present and everyone in every language is laughing at us, where will the new supporters for the future come from?

  5. Another off-topic article about ‘unlucky’ Arsenal. There is nothing ‘unlucky’ about making the same mistake time after time and expecting a different result. In fact that is closer to a definition of insanity than ‘ill luck’.

  6. WOW some of you deserve what happening to the club, i wrote days ago that all the excuses will be out, i even said Sanchez will now get the blame , now you ever write articles about “is it sanchez’s fault. you couldnt make this s@£$ up

the club needs changing from top to bottom, the board the manager a whole load of players
and some fans need to man up and open their eyes

    1. i was not blaming Sanchez’s game i’m just stating that what ever the reason something is not right and it looks like his unhappy and should do the right thing and keep his facial and body expressions off the cameras,
i’m sure which ever team Sanchez plays for except Barcelona he would of been a good player but at arsenal he become a World Class player and he should remember this when next his on the pitch or on the bench and when he choses a club in the summer making sure that its not in the EPL

      1. i’m sure because of his public show of his despoilment and unhappiness at Arsenal his basically saying get me out of here which in return means he will go for half the price

  7. As usual Wenger only tells part of the story. Yes the ref was crap and biased, but we still rolled over like little puppies when they put the pressure on after half time.

We have a team with little to no belief. The manager is living in the past and never accepts criticism of himself.

He is completely ruining this club by treating it as if he owns it. The blame for that lays with people supposedly above him, but they don’t seem to give a toss.

He is deluded, obstinate, arrogant, and doesn’t possess what is required in the modern era to manage a top team AT the top.

I’m beyond tired of it all, and if he doesn’t take the massive hint that he might just take some blame for this, and subsequently leave, hen he truly deserves to be pilloried by press/pundits and fans.

  8. yes, the reason we are the side to be defeated by the biggest aggregate margin in the history of the champions league is because the referee doesn’t like us.

    happy now!?

  9. Look let’s be honest, the ref was terrible. If we were leading the PL had a 1-1 draw in Munich chances are we would have agreed with Wenger. As it stands and as a result of Wenger never wanting to own responsibility for results, the ref doesn’t quite cover him.

We all knew there was no way we would qualify after our 5-1 loss in Munich. The lads gave it a valiant effort and went 1-0 up. Why didn’t Wenger feel the pulse of the fans? We would have accepted a draw or a small loss. There is not a rational Arsenal fan who would not have understood if Wenger threw in the towel after the red card. He should have brought Gabriel on and taken Giroud of and told the lads to defend with all 9 players. Instead he allowed us to play a vastly superior team not only with one man less but also with only one CD. Ludecrous.

All the decisions he made after the red card were his not the refs and they were poor decisions. Ozil!????!!! He brings on Ozil????? Even with no players missing as a result of a red card Ozil is a liability defensively, everyone knows that.

There is hopeless but brave effort and we saw that in the first half, and there is outright foolishness and we saw that from Wenger in the second half.

    1. Bring on Gabriel so we can lose 5-1 again like we did in munich?
3 defenders with Coquelin dropping deep to makeshift CB when we was defending conceded the same amount of goals as we did with Gab on. Oh add to this we was also 1 man down!!!

Sorry to say but Gab is not Arsenal material, has has the passion and I feel sorry for saying this but he needs to be sold ASAP and let Holding step up as 1st choice backup.

As for subs.. I don’t think Wenger is best at making subs anyway. Only thing I can really wonder from it is why not play Alexis and Ozil together? Has Alexis had a falling out with Ozil? Alexis did not sulk at coming off like he usually does… This was odd and got me wondering. He always wants to play the full time and even then it never seems long enough to satisfy him 🙂

I think the 1st 45 mins shown who the more important player to Arsenal is, Alexis is our main man and maybe it could be time to sell Ozil and drop that ACM role for the formation we played yesterday in the 1st 45 mins.

I was impressed with the CM in the 1st 45 mins and it had no room for Ozil in it. Xhaka seemed to play better with 2 B2B infront of him, Ox played better in CM and Ramsey played better with Ox and Xhaka around him. I could imagine Cazorla would play well in that CM formation as well.

So now I am keeping my fingers crossed that Ozils ‘flu’ comes back again.

  10. Was there a chance of us overcoming that 4 goal deficit to begin with? Slim to None. But we scored the first goal, and could have gotten another if the PK on the foul on Walcott was given. Second half we again created a great chance that Giroud should’ve put away. And then we get called for a PK ourselves, which not only was questionable on its own, but also came from an offside position. And to add more misery on top of it all the refs decide to give a red card. Some people didn’t see the game, I did. So love him or hate him (Wenger), but what he said was the absolute truth.

  11. Article didn’t mention Vidals red card challenge on Alexis in the 1st half.
Gone in studs first and hit Alexis just above the knee, in the EPL we would have seen a red produced for that due to the dangerous nature of the tackle…

I don’t think we could have won 4-0 but after the 1st half it looked like we could have won and won by a couple goals and it was a 1st half performance to be pleased with.

  12. ye ye It was raining down our end , the sun was in our eyes, there was a stone in my boot the bigger boys would not give us the ball, the Referee was on their side. This Team are just not good enough for this level of football. So the question is who bought them answer Mr Wenger and the Arsenal board. It not Rocket Science you buy average players you get average Football.
