Wenger confirms talks but will star men snub new Arsenal contracts?

There’s been plenty of debate surrounding the futures of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil because although it was believed the pair may have been considering their futures at the club at the start of the summer, it is now led to be believed that both the Chilean and the German wish to extend their contracts with the Gunners.

It was understood earlier this summer that Alexis Sanchez was reportedly growing frustrated with Arsenal for showing a lack of intent in the transfer market. Since Alexis joined the club he has of course won a single FA Cup and the Community Shield, but he was unable to help Arsenal to silverware last season. Having been a winner wherever he has played, Arsenal’s supposed lack of ambition had begun to frustrate the Chilean international, but after being given the number 7 shirt, which shows his importance to the team, as well as more intent in the transfer window with the signings of Xhaka, Lucas and Mustafi, it now seems that Alexis is keen to stride forward with Arsenal and hopefully sign a new contract in the process.

More likely to sign a new contract extension in my opinion, is German international Mesut Ozil. Ozil has learnt to love everything about the club and has already spoke about his intent to get negotiations underway with the Gunners now that the season has started again. Ozil clearly has intentions of winning major honours with Arsenal and considering this season is now his fourth campaign with the club, the star man will have to sign a new contract soon.

Speaking on the matter before Arsenal’s Champions League clash with PSG, a team which has many stars names in their line-up, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger officially confirmed that the Gunners are set to begin contractual negotiations with the pair. Wenger said: “[Regarding] Ozil and Sanchez, we will start to talk for their extensions.”

It may be a little line from the manager, but it is more than satisfying for a fan to hear. The pair’s contracts were supposedly running out in 24 months time, whilst reports have now suggested that they may both extend until the year 2021. Let’s hope that both Alexis and Ozil remain at Arsenal for many years to come, because these are the types of players that are going to help the Gunners raise our level of ambition and with any luck, return Arsenal to ways of challenging for major honours every season.

  1. I still dont get why we’re the only top team that waits until the opponent is in our half before we try to win the ball.. with the addition of mustafi we now have a very pacy backline, which means that way,we can play a high line and saturate our opponents half with numbers.
That we can win the ball high up the pitch which will also conserve a lot of energy as our attackers won’t have to run 50 yards each and every time we launch an attack.

  2. These contract talks will be on going right through the season and if Arsenal don’t have a successful one i.e. win the premiership and or progress further in the champions league then it may prove difficult to keep Ozil and Sanchez happy without paying them an extortionate wage plus huge add ons. I’m not convinced that the improvements to our squad will be enough to make them stay should Arsenal fail to do so which will mean we either sell them or they run their currant contracts down and leave on a free transfer.
