Wenger drops biggest hint yet that he’s staying at Arsenal

Following Arsenal’s hard-fought 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the semi-finals of the FA Cup, the Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was in a jovial mood as he addressed the pre-match press conference ahead of the mid-week clash against Leicester City. On being asked about his future, the Arsenal manager remained coy on the subject but did drop a hint that he will stay on beyond the end of the season by admitting that he is looking at transfer targets for the next campaign.

The Frenchman said: “Yes, of course I am (looking at transfer targets). I work until the last day of the season for the future. “Transfer targets are important for the future of the club. That (my future) is secondary, the future of the club is important.”

For me, this is most certainly a sign that Wenger will sign a new contract and continue at the helm for at least a couple more seasons. Otherwise, it would not make sense for him to be active in the transfer market. If he were to leave, then the onus would be on whoever replaces him to come in and build their team. Let’s face it, if Wenger was going anywhere, an announcement would have been made by now to at least give a sense of relief to the masses of frustrated Gooners.

But whether you are WOB or AKB, the reality of the situation is that Wenger is staying and we will have to get behind the team as they once again chase a top-four finish and an FA Cup as a silver lining. With Wenger finally showing signs of moving with the times by playing a back-three system, Arsenal fans can only hope that Wenger will change his transfer policy as well and bring in world-class talent who can carry the Gunners to future success.

  1. Remember people…it’s not just two more years, but probably four, and maybe even a little more. As I’ve said before, if Wenger can sign a new contract when his position has become untenable, the results being diabolical, majority of the fans wanting him out, and the loss of the dressing room, then I cannot see any reason why he wouldn’t sign another contract in two years time.

The protests must continue, and not let up. It’s a FACT, that Arsenal have been regressing under Wenger, so that has to be addressed.

  2. It will be foolish of him to stay as I don’t see him improving the team. It will be even more foolish for the board to offer him another 2 years.

Best case scenario, Wenger guarantees us CL football and lifts the FA cup in his final game at the club. I just hope our old and outdated board are already in the market for a top manager, and the manager is already assessing the squad and who he will bring in.

  3. For me to have any respect left for him he has to finish top four and lift the FA Cup then leave and only then he will still be a manager remembered with some respect and have his statue outside the stadium

  4. as yogi berra said “the future aint what it used to be” … truer words could not have been spoken if this corporate lap dog hangs around for another 2 or more years

  5. Look across the football managers’ field, Mr. Wenger. Your age mates with even superior achievements have retired from lead management. You have done the best you could ever do for the club. Retire now with some honor. Remember the adage,’ leave the stage when you are still needed’. Or else you risk a disgraceful exit sooner than later.

  6. This is not really a hint that he is staying. It would be a Wenger thing to control everything until the last minute. The only reason he doesn’t want to tell is if he is staying or going is because he isn’t sure himself. Not for obvious reasons but just because if he signs a new contract he does not want to hand in any power he has at the club.
