Wenger (non)tactics and team selection prove he has to leave Arsenal

Tony Adams’ comments and the Ramsey debate by NS

Wenger said before yesterdays game

“We don’t plan for anybody. It is always the same – focus on our strengths and forget about your opponent.”

“There is nobody special that you least like to face,” he added.

“All players have different qualities.”

Tony Adams also said before the game on TV last night on Truesports (Asia) that Wenger makes no special arrangements for opposition tactics or how to deal with certain players.

Seeing as he played under Wenger for years, he should know.

At one time, United and Arsenal had the pick of players. Now, those days are long gone.

For Wenger to have no plan for Bale, Messi or a team’s set up is suicidal in my opinion.

AVB was constantly giving his team instructions and looking at their goals, was well aware of Mertersacker stepping out. To be fair, I think Merty only does this as we have no defensive midfield player. Another joke.

Ramsey gets a lot of stick. Some fans don’t like it. However, many of those are not shy in slating Santos or Gervinho.

Here is the news. Gervinho is no Messi, but I would take him over Ramsey any day of the week.

So, how can Wenger leave Podolski on the bench. The man has more assists than any other player in the Premier League this season. He’s also scored a few. Rosciky is the other obvious choice.

What world is Wenger living in if he feels Ramsey is better than Podolski or Rosicky?

He’s been played in the big games. Look at the outcome of those games.

Whilst it is unfair to single him out (Vermaelen was even worse), I’ve yet to see him have a great game. Even TV does have the odd stormer. Arteta has saved us a few times this season. The Ox has looked very good (and bad) at times. Even Gervinho banged a few in early on in the season.

What has Ramsey done for us?

And what is he?

A DM? No. Can’t tackle and not defensive minded.
A box to box player? Don’t make me laugh. He’s far too slow and lacks power.
A creative player? Some say he is. Please tell me how many goals he’s scored and how many assists he has?
A utility player? Possibly. So what the hell is he doing starting the big games?

It’s not his fault.

It’s Wenger’s fault. He’s clearly not good enough and keeps getting thrown in against teams like Bayern.

I’m trying not to scapegoat him as others had poor games, but he’s done nothing for the team when you look at it.

It’s annoying when fellow gooners say ‘he did ok today?’ Like it’s a good thing that he wasn’t terrible.

We don’t need ‘ok’ on the odd day and ‘useless’ the rest of the time. That is just not good enough for this club.

Wenger needs to stop this stupid fetish of his and start looking at the teams we are playing a little more.

Sad thing is, he won’t change.

Sadly, due to this fact, I believe we need a change of manager.

Neil

No matter where we end or what happens, this season has long been over. I wonder if the fans expected this team to suddenly wake up and be any different in big games. I can almost guarantee you one thing… No Champions League football, to go with our 8th trophyless year. We are essentially in the relegation zone of the top tier of the English Premiership. It is job of the manager to know what is wrong with his team. Wenger just doesn’t have a clue & he unashamedly admits it in the post-game interviews. He maintains the same old tactics, week in & week out, expecting different results. Isn’t that the definition of a fool?

Seriously i dont know why ramsey shud start ahead of coquelin.
I dont even know why giroud shud start ahead of podolski.
I dont even know why rosisky shud be on the bench.

Lastly i have a question please what position is ramsey playing?
A)a box to box midfielder B) a defensive midfielder C) a confused position.

    Please i need an answer.

the club needs a new direction. AW’s ego is too big to allow the team to adapt. Despite willing many trophies, SAF has always kept his ego in check in the face winning, and is willing to adapt and critic himself. Arsenal needs a new manager

If i managed the team last night.

I would play Mertesacker and Kos as CB’s and then TV5 as a CDM. Seeing as he has a hefty shot. Solving both problems of a poor back 4 and that we don’t have a CDM. Much like Luiz at Chelsea.
Along with that Walcott and Ox on the wings to provide speed, and Podolski down the middle.

But Wenger is not brave enough to try this, in my eyes he has to go.

Also fans shouldn’t be hasty and vote for this Arab takeover, Even if it is just speculation it is not the answer.

The penny pinching professor is playing most of these players out of their position obviously Ramsey was playing a holding midfielder role which is not his potion just because he had one good game does not mean he’s a DM. AW reluctance not to replace Song is costing us and how is Giourd Van persie replacement? He is no where near Van should have kept Van still had a year on his contract rite not our champions league spot is in jeopardy!! Padoski would be a better option as a striker wonder why AW does not utilize his for that role he’s more agile and can do a lot more that our tall lanky striker. Our defenders dismal, imagine if AW had coughed up the cash for Samba and Cahill we would have never been in this position!! He need to go he’s stayed here long enough and even if we do get fourth AW still needs to go!!!

Another thing is Ramsey works hard and will be a good player one day, But he is only 21, he should be a sub and have some star players to look up too, he’s still learning greatly. Not even to mention hes played on the wings everytime.

My personal views on the future of Mr Wenger is this:

I believe that, despite the views of certain people on this sight, he will always be remembered as an Arsenal legend and thus should be treated as one, meaning that he should/ will never be sacked.

HOWEVER this does not necessarily mean he should not leave,I believe that Arsene has earned the right to chose his own time of departure. I can only hope that his fortunes change quickly, or else I think it may be time for him to have to make that decision.

If he were to actually be fired I would be worried for the future of our club, Wenger without a doubt lives and breathes Arsenal FC which is a trait that most except Wilshere and a few of the other young players seem to lack. With Wenger out only Silent Stan and Gazidis the terrible would be there to decide on our club’s future…

Asernal is terible shit right now. I do not know whether Wenger is a comptent manager for Asernal. How could a manager worth his level fail to have a plan for BALE? How could he leave on bench Podolsk and Rosisky who are far better than Ramesy he put in and who in my view contributed to the first goal through his failure to tackle the opponent? I have come to believe that Asernal my not be badly off in terms of players but it is the problem of the manager. Asernal needs A DM, a quality no.9 and good no.5 and a good goal keeper and it will be o.k . However, that can only be achieved with the sacking of Wenger otherwise the problems of Asernal will continue and there will be no trophy when Wenger is still a manager.

Tippy tappy sideways passing is getting us nowhere and we have noticed this for a few years.
To be successful you need a mixture of talent, experience, two CB’s who scare the crap out of any CF, strength (ie MEN) and a leader on the pitch.
Once you have all the above and also a manager who has a variety of strategies and a game plan depending on his opponent you are still half way there because you need 100% commitment.
A lot of people are going on about ramsey but only him and jack were committed yesterday even when wenger put the lad at RB.
our forwards took too much time on the ball and our two CB’s should be fined for their appearance.
I wont comment on the manager because too many fools still put him above AFC.

Rosicky on the bench? Chavi from Barca is 34 and he still makes a difference…Pirlo too….so Rosicky has another 2 years at least…strong def midfielder instead of Arteta and Rosicky in stead of AR. I am no coach, and I have always thought a strange thing when ppl tell AW how he needs to coach and select…but this one is no brainer…

i think if arsene make giroud play, i will not by suprise to see ramsey, gervinho… playing , the player that before the other must not play is giroud and no body tokes about it, ramsey is better then him even gervinho.Giroud scored 21 goals with montpellier by chance, he had one very good saison with them but till know he didnt prove anything with arsenal even chamakh is better then him. Ramsey did a very good game yesterday, he played even better then walcoott, gervinho did very well in the cup of nation so give him a chance and giroud sell him.

@Tom THANKYOU. Someone else who thinks Chamberlain should be played down the left wing. With two good pacy wingers, we have another attacking dimension and better chance to score. I also agree with Poldi as CF, the guy is quicker than Giroud on the counter and is a far better player overall. AND HE CAN SHOOT! Last time I checked you need to be able to shoot to score! So yes, thumbs up from me for having those 3 up front in attack.

I agree with most of this article, Ramsey is a nice kid, but that don’t make you win titles. The poor guy has been messed around from MF, to LW, to RB…it’s no wonder he cannot develop his game and get better because Wenger keeps f*cking him around like a little bitch. Excuse my language, but it really is UNNACCEPTABLE that Wenger has to resort to using him as RB when we are low on players. Arsenal should have 2-3 players for each position, NO EXCUSE. This mix and match sh*t has got to go and WENGER IS SOLELY TO BLAME.

Half our squad is composed of average-poor players who were purchased after the departure of Dein. When Dein was around, we signed some great players and players with great potential. After he left, Wenger has signed some absolute crap…and it’s no coincidence. Wenger is being exposed for the overrated manager he really is. No tactics, I mean to not have a game plan against a team with Bale in it is just ludicrous. I watched him, and he was all over the pitch, from left to right. When they played United, Ferguson had Jones mark him out the game and he was kept quiet. But no, Wenger always knows better, stubborn old fool.

Wenger needs to pack his bags ASAP, he really is the most overrated manager in the world and his lack of tactics and poor squad selection is testament to that. As for the Arabs, bring them in, I’m tired of having to scrape the bottom of every barrel for cheap players who just are not good enough. So Kroenke, sell up because you have no business with Arsenal, your heart and passion is not with this club. I want a takeover and I want Dein to control funds and scouting, and bring in a no nonsense coach/manager like Mourinho who will light a fire under our players backsides and get rid of all the sh*t players. We need a manager with a winning mentality to rub off on our players.

@Shaun Ramsey has had flashes of brilliance for years but has never mounted to anything. He would never make it into any of the other top teams, so why is he good enough for Arsenal? Would Ramsey play first team for United, City, Chelsea, Spurs, Madrid, Barca, Bayern etc etc. No he wouldn’t. The same applies to most of our team. Giroud, Gervinho, Diaby, Arshavin, Park, Chamakh, Squid all fit into that bracket too. THEY JUST ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH and are bringing our team down.

Did you all see how slow Giroud was yesterday, he had a very good chance to score but took too long to kick the ball. He was in front of the defender, but somehow the defender managed to close him down from behind and still make the tackle. Also when Walcott broke down the wing a few times, Giroud was still outside the big box when the ball was crossed. But we can’t blame the player because he is playing to the best of his ability. Wenger should be blamed for buying such crap and playing them week in and out.

Really tired of fans sticking up for Wenger, it has gone far beyond a point of complacency now. I’m sure even half of us fans could do a better job than him and I’m being serious when I say that. The man is a complete joke and on top of that, every ex Arsenal player and pretty much anyone who knows a thing or two about football agrees on what should be done, EXCEPT WENGER. Defenses issues for years but Wenger does nothing about it. He sells Song without adequate replacement. He sells possibly one of the greatest strikers on earth atm, and replaces him with Giroud. WHO IS HE TRYING TO KID?

I m going to go further and state that we should have in fact dominated at home and especially Europe with the players like Henry Bergkamp Veira Adams,Pires Gilborto etc etc in the invincible team we had.

As Adam said, Wenger never had any plans or tactics and in one off big game as such we were sitting duck against well prepared astute tactical opposition…case in point being losing Champions league final against Guardiola and losing unbeaten run against Manure, thanks to Fergie’s dirty tactics!

Fact is with bit of planning and tactics, we could and should have won Champions league atleast once , if not 2 or 3 times!

Old dog Wenger is out of his depth against younger astute tactical managers!

We have a mostly average team, of average players, which the only consistent thing they do is underperform. Ramsey, Gervihno, Santos, and even Giroud (my patience with him is running out – what use is a striker that needs a couple of seasons to find his feet – we needed a striker who can net the ball from the get go), are not hitting the mark. And something has shifted in TV5′s mindset, because he’s not the player of previous seasons – a rock and formidable defender. The Szcz is not a keeper of the calibre we require (not right now, maybe in the future), especially when our defence is a leaky as a siv. The Ox is way to young, and playing with medeocraty won’t help his cause. Podolski has good and bad days, but IMO he should be played through the middle. TW seems to have settled back into averageness, now that he gave a few months of effort to get a bigger pay packet – now that you have the extra cash Wallcott, PERFORM! Diaby … What’s the point if you are never on the pitch because you are so freakin fragile??!?
So in my view, Arteta, Cazorla, & Wilshere – only player I see playing his heart out consistently – these boys are the only players who are both capable, and worthy of wearing an Arsenal shirt right now. 3 players are not a team. And as has been stated – Wenger plays many players out of position. Sure, maybe for half a season – when we have injuries, but when the tranfer window comes, you get the right players, to play in the right positions – where a player’s strength and natural abilities help him flourish and add to the teams cohesive gel. Wenger says we don’t plan for anyone, and just play to our strengths – well …
It seems that Wenger is ignorant to his players strengths, as he keeps playing them out of position. How is that playing to our strengths? Also, Spuds Shut Us Down yesterday. A good manager:
    - comes in with the right strategy,
    - is ready for his opponent,
    - is ready to counter whatever they throw at us, has a plan “B” … And “C”, & “D” if necessary,
    - is capable of motivating his players to perform above what they are capable of, and
    - makes the hard decisions that are best for the team, and doesn’t pamper individual players if they are not performing
……… So how is Wenger doing with the list above? He would not score highly in my books. (maybe once, but not now).
And don’t get me started on the clubs management – selling our best players to make the balance sheet look good. WHAT A TOTAL LOAD OF BULLSH*T!!!
I have lost my faith in our Manager and Club. The ship is sinking like the Titanic, and the management and board are the captain and his crew – in denial. (“it’s just a flesh wound” – monty python).

@Big Gun. I agree completely especially your comments about Dein, and Wenger being over rated. He did nothing at his previous clubs and has done nothing since Dein left. Also his lack of tactical nous is extraordinary for a so called top manager. As was pointed out on MOD, there was ample warnings about the through balls that split our defence but there was not a word from the bench to organise the defence. I know that hindsight is a wonderful thing but that is why we expect one of the highest paid managers in the world to anticipate and correct such problems

Wenger’s B.S. tactics and players selections have hurt the team all season, but especially in the last 10 games or so when he decided it was a good idea to bench the league leader in assist.

We have been screaming about all this since last season.

How many teams have articulated their desire to pick up Ramsey for the club? Answer = 0.

How many teams have articulated their deep fear of playing Arsenal when Ramsey is in the lineup?

He is now the poster-boy for mediocrity and failure.

Ridiculously harsh on Ramsey, he had as good a game as most of our players! We largely controlled the midfield where he, arteta and wilshere were playing, it was the defence and attack that were our poor areas! Have a go at giroud, vermaelen, monreal etc because they were actually poor!

Ramsey has done what for the team? Give me something concrete that he has done to help the team win in his 36 appearances.

I can name 2 incidents. That is it for the entire season.

Working hard and making lots of short passes does help the team win – quality does, production does, creativity does. Ramsey has none of these qualities. His play is always disruptive and chaotic.

They know exactly how to stop Arsenal playing and know exactly how to exploit a shaky defense. Whats more they know wenger is never going to change regardless of how miserably he is failing. It’s why Ferguson has been spanking Wengers arse for the last 9 years because he’s figured him out and Wengers too proud and stubborn to recognize it. Anyone else notice? We have Ramsey, Chelski have Mikel, Manure have Carrick and Man $hity have Barry. It’s like a trend that top clubs need to have 1 absolutely rubbish CM that plays every game lol.

    But seriously, Wenger out.

It is frustrating seeing the line ups before every game and saying to myself, “Podolski on the bench?” “Kos on the bench?” “Rosicky? Coquelin?” “Where is Arshavin? That world class CF that Wenger ruined?” and “Mertesacker, Ramsey and Giroud are playing. 11 vs 8 then. Make that 11 vs 7 when Gervinho comes on.”

    Now, my opinion:

Szczesny, I like his personality and he looked great last season, but this season he’s been poor and cost us many goals.

TV and Mertesacker are crap. It’s sad but true with TV, I like him a lot and always have but for the past 2/3 seasons he has proved he just hasn’t got it any more.

I like Kos. Not only is he loyal but also a top professional. I would love to see him starting every game as I also think he is a great defender. I know he has made some mistakes but he has improved a lot.

Sagna can go, not only is he unloyal – admitting he wants to leave soon – but he’s been terrible this season. He was great before, so thanks for your service Sagna.

I like Jenkinson and Gibbs, top gooners and great players. Wish Gibbs wasn’t so injury prone. Nacho would be a back up for Gibbs when he’s fit.

Jack should be captain. Cazorla should play a central role every game.

Arteta… was great last season, looks like he fights hard and loves the club, but this season… hasn’t been great. Fouls a lot, loses the ball, doesn’t score or make assists.

Diaby… garbage, sell him, he’s never fit and even when he is he’s shockingly bad.

Ramsey… shouldn’t be played every game, simply isnt good enough but it’s not his fault, it’s wengers. I’d loan him out.

Play Podolski as Striker. Every game. He has Arshavin syndrome. AW playing him out of position and is going to ruin him.

Buy a new RW and make Theo an impact sub, he’s too inconsistent.

    Giroud – sell him.

Again, that’s just my opinion. And I feel as an average 20 year old gooner that I could, as I’m sure you all could, see the mistakes that are right in front of me, that happen every game, and CHANGE the tactics.

Wenger is stubborn, deluded and annoying. Please for the love of Arsenal, leave. I personally would love Laudrup as manager. Was a world class player, is a great manager so far and also a good personality.

Ego Wenger out. He’s gone senile.

The article is spot on. Ramsey is a joke, and the only explanation that I can come up with why he starts so many games for us is that he’s got something on Wenger. Little Mozart and Poldi also deserve better. Wenger either needs to wake up and change his approach/tactics, or leave.

your spot on about Ramsey,18 starts,18 appearances as sub,1 goal and 1 assist. He doesn’t do enough,he just gets carried every match,Arteta’s much the same.

This article is stupid, I guess Pirlo doesn’t have a position either. Ramsey has put more effort than 95% of our players. Remember against Sunderland? I guess not. Goodbye to this shit and biased site

Ramsey won the free kick that we scored from and stopped Gareth Bale from doing anything, without him we would’ve lost and it would’ve been by more. Oh and what exactly did Rosicky do when he came on, repeatedly give the ball away and offered nothing going forward.

    @Matt

    Calm down.

Pirlo is a player who controls the tempo of a game.

Very few players in world football can do that properly. Xavi, Pirlo, Modric (at Spurs) and Wilshere spring to mind. After that…it’s a bit of a struggle to think of anyone.

Controlling the tempo ivolves a great football brain and the ability to change the pace of the game. If you watch those players they seem like any other midfield player for a few minutes. A few sideways or tippy tappys. Nice but nothing amazing going on. Suddenly, they spot a gap (perhaps 60 yards away), and drive forward. The game opens up and the team goes on the attack.

Aaron Ramsey is not capable looking at his form for two years.

u summed it up in the last sentence HE IS TOO RIGID to change or accept his mistakes. Again he comes with a statement that we were a better side against our opponents BUT THE FACT IS WE LOST. and how many times has this happen this season.Classic example monreal transfer. till the last moment there was no quality player anywhere to be found and then Gibbs gets injured and somehow out of his hat in the last moment he pulls out a rabbit. What if gibbs had got injured after the transfer window. Now wasnt that a panic signing. HE IS JUST LETTING THINGS GET TOO LATE. We can only beat chalsea and spurs for that CL spot if he plays with right combination of players eg rosicky instead of ramsey and podoski instead of giroud. Personally i think its too late for us. Still i pray for my Team. My God help us to that CL spot

Am not being critical about Ramsey,he disrupts d team..carzola is the best giver of the final pass in Arsenal, why put him on d flanks when you got speedy players like Ox, Gervinho (even if most of u think he’s crap) I still think he’s better than 3players regularly playin..did u noticed Ramsey played 3different positions during the match??(Central midfield, left wing nd right back)..from d first match Giroud playd for arsenal,I knew he’s wasting our time, that guy takes 5mins to shoot a shot,he’s extremely sluggish,he can’t take on defenders and worst of all he misses sitters..wtf!!..only wenger knws why..Arteta does little for us to get much hype he does…Theo is as erratic as Gervinho(d latter is more hated)…Mertasacker does little at d back….WeNGER OUT!!

i think Ramsey will bring about Wengers downfall, cos its Wengers constant selection of substandard players like him, that shows us that we can’t keep on blaming the board,an try an make excuses for AW.Its because of him,his coaching, his team selection, tactics, judgement and work in the transfer market that have lead us to the edge of this cliff.

ALL OUR PLAYERS ARE LAZY AND AVERAGE EXCEPT OF WILSHERE.THEY ARE ALL EARNING A FAT WEEKLY SALARY AND CAN’T BE BOTHERED . WE ARE PAYING FOR IT AND WITHOUT THE EXPENSIVE SEASON TICKET THEY WOULD BE EARNING LESS.WHY WENGER PAY FAT SALARY TO AVERAGE PLAYER,, LOOK AT DIABY SIXTY THOUSAND A WEEK AND. YET HE REFUSED TO BUY GOOD PLAYERS AT A LITTLE MORE EXPENSIVE. HE HAD VERTOGEN CHEAP RECOMMENDED BY VERM AND HE TURNED HIM AWAY BY SAYING HE HAS ENOUGH QUALITY PLAYERS. WHERE IS. THE QUALITY.THE CLUB IS SLIDDING TOO FAST.. WE NEED A BUYER VERY SOON TO STOP US BEING A MEAGRE CLUB.

WE HAVE GOT PLAYERS BUT WE DONT HAVE CREATIVITY AROUND THE OPPONENT’S GOAL AREA.
SECONDLY, WENGER LACK OF FORESIGHT THINKING IS LEADING ARSENAL TO AN ENDLESS BOTTOMLESS PIT. ASK YOURSELF, LAST SEASON HE REMOVED CHAMBERLIN AT THE VERY CRUCIAL MOMENT AND BROUGHT ASHARVIN AND WE LOST STUPIDLY TO MANU.
IF ONE SAW THE LAST MATCH THE DERBY GAME. WHY ON EARTH WENGER LEFT RAMSEY NOT SUBSITUTED YET HE WAS NOLONGER MAKING IMPACT. EVEN THE GOAL ATTEPMT HE MADE WOULD HAVE BEEN A GOAL IF IT WAS WALCOT. AGAIN WHY DID HE LEAVE LATE TO BRING IN PODOLSKI. WORST OF ALL WHY DID HE REMOVE JENKISNSON AND REPLACE WITH A MIDFIELDER. And what was Giroud doing in the field the whole 90 minutes???? Dogshit

For me our season ended in the January transfer window and it proved to me that Wenger was no longer worthy to be the manager of our team. He’s lost it and acting archaic in a 21st century…He can’t even make a simple and correct substitution even when it is glaring for a ley man to see…WENGER SUCKS AND DESERVES A RED CARD BUT ARSENAL STIL ROCK MY WORLD
