What are Arsenal’s ‘reachable targets’?

So Arsenal are on a four-match losing run, and have been in absolutely dire form since January, but how can they get out of this awful rut?

Arsene Wenger was asked what his blueprint was in this situation and he replied: “[We need] to fix reachable targets,” he said. “Be practical, pragmatic – focus on what you can do better and analyse well what you didn’t do well and not be scared too much about the consequences of a bad result.

“Focus on defending better, playing quicker and doing more things together. Reachable targets to improve the team.”

And what could be these ‘reachable targets’? Staying in the Top Six in the League? Winning the Europa League? Or just coming away from Milan with less than a thrashing, so we have a chance to come back at the Emirates. Wenger is not thinking too far ahead at the moment. “At the moment, before thinking of winning the Europa League, we have to face Milan and try to give absolutely everything to qualify.

“It will be a tight game, a tight tie because Milan are going well so we have to focus on that.”

I think Wenger is hoping for a tight game, so he will be concentrating on trying to keep Milan’s potent strike force quiet. That will not be easy with the defensive errors we have been making lately. In our last two games we have been 3-0 down to Man City at half time, and 2-1 down to Brighton, whereas Milan have conceded just once in their last six games.

Maybe aiming for a 0-0 draw is a ‘reachable target???

  1. Every team knows that we start the game 10 to 15 mnt later then our opposition if we can turn up 5 mnt before the opposition that’s a realistic goal

  2. Far too late, anything worthwhile well out of reach.
    (1) 33 points from city, title was gone again in december.
    (2) Top 4 unreachable, we look miles away.
    (3) winning Europa league seems unlikely, we can’t play our way out of a wet bag currently
    (4) new manager seems best hope to turn this around

    1. Winning Europa is likely, I think we would see it tonight

If the fans give up before the fight, the players will give up too

      1. Players will give up regardless of what fans do.

After all, they go home back to their mansions, with another 100k coming in next week.

        1. I’d say the players give up before the fans…. You can still hear the fans singing & chanting!
I hope they put on a show for all the travelling fans…

  3. The vital target we must reach is to get Wenger sacked at latest by May. To this end we should all welcome and hope for a continued string of shameful defeats. We can reach THAT target and indeed have been doing so with ease. I crave a several goals defeat at ACM tonight , as I know what is ACTUALLY important, and I suspect most agree with me. We cannot afford to win the Europa – not that we have even a cat in hell’s chance anyway – if it means even a one percent chance of keeping the non coaching fraud as manager. Realism!!!

    1. i am beginning to think that we will need a manager in before the end of the season … the summer will be disrupted by world cup so having someone interact with team and understand its weaknesses before season closes seems essential to me … of course that would imply that the greedy owner and hapless board are already thinking about alternatives and i worry that this is not the case but once we are out of the europa there will be no excuses even for these feckless characters let alone the last remaining wenger junkies on this site .. i hope your realism is justified

  4. Only a fool can’t see we are rebuilding breaking transfer record twice bringing competent staff with a good track record ,so where we finish is not a problem because we are not organized well yet.We are in the Verge of success arsenal is not about Wenger but the system working well from bottom to the top

  5. Europa League is the reachable target

Hopefully Wenger saw Tottenham vs Juventus last night. Despite lost, Tottenham players showed great confidence and bravery to dominate Juventus throughout the first half

I can’t remember the last time our players played like that when facing other big teams. Wenger has to push his players to be more creative and brave, don’t always play safe

  6. We actually improved Chelsea by selling them Giroud innit.
I rate Giroud higher than Morata
So we will probably finish 6th place
I don’t think Burnley will send us to 7th

Definitely the worst season of my lifetime

  7. Lets be honest the Europa League is the slightest bit of dignity that Arsene & The Board have left to cling onto after another miserable season under the Frenchman… I do believe that the 2year deal was to keep the questions from the media of him leaving to a minimum knowing full well their is an agreement in place for all parties to agree for him to leave if this season isnt good, tonights game & 2nd leg will answer a few questions!

    Off Topic…
Sol Campbell gave a great interview on Arsenal today that i read online & he sums up the same thing as most of us do on here that we have no leaders, whereas in his day he had Kolo, Dennis, Patrick etc…. Arsene didnt build that team of leaders, he inherited the George Graham mentality that went throughout the club at the time. It all changed when all the old guard left & the move to Emirates happened.

I do hope we win the EL as i am an Arsenal Fan no matter the circumstances, why the hell would any of you NOT WANT TO WIN that title just for the sake of Arsene? I want him out as much as the next fan asap but i want Arsenal to do well tonight as Wengers time is coming to an end soon.. we all know it

    1. Wenger doesn’t seem to recognise the word def now but go back to when he had David Dein to talk to as our CEO then you will see that we had greater balance. Wenger done his best when we had a CEO who knew about football and was a supporter of AFC.

David Deins loss hurt more than anything else for the past couple decades.

  8. Reachable targets?

    New GK Coach
    New Def Coach
    New Mid Coach
    New Att Coach

Replace the manager with a head coach.

Us gooners are good at recognising the work of some behind the scenes people, I have read people supporting Sven since he joined and praise him, I believe we would do the same with specialized coaches.

  9. Wenger only seem to care about one target; keeping his job.
If he reaches that target, we can only hope to retain a midtable status in PL next year as well, and you can forget everything about any success.
