The first statistic I’d like to mention, and it could be vital for how the season ends, is that Arsenal are second only to Man Utd in the form charts, above both of our rivals for the Champions League, Chelsea and Spurs. With those two facing tough fixtures for the rest of the season, we should be reasonably confident of a top four finish.
Eplindex.com has compiled stats about the best players in the Premier League so far this season, so it is interesting to see how the Gunners are doing. They show the top five for attacking, creativity, assists, passing, final third passing and winning possession. There are no Arsenal players in the first or last categories, perhaps showing where we need to strengthen in the summer. It will be no surprise to Arsenal fans that a striker and a defensive midfielder seem to be what is required.
We have not got a player in the top five scorers, but if you look at combined goals and assists, Walcott is joint fourth with Bale and Mata on 21, while Santi Cazorla and Lukas Podolski are close behind. It is no surprise to see Cazorla in the top five for creativity and final third passing, and Arsenal need him to continue his good form for the rest of the season. He has been a fantastic signing.
Podolski and Walcott are in the category for assists, and Mikel Arteta is right at the top of the passing stats. What is a little more unexpected is to see Per Mertesacker in the top five for passing, reinforcing the fact that his game is more about control than throwing himself on the line.
Of course, the most important stat for Arsenal now is to finish above Chelsea, Tottenham or both, but it is nice to see Arsenal players well represented in these lists.
