Who deserved Arsenal’s Player Of The Season? Ramsey or Monreal or who?

It is a bit moot to discuss Arsenal’s Player of the Season after we had our worst ever campaign under Wenger’s ill-fated tenure, but even the relegated teams get to name one so why shouldn’t we?

Our highly-critical contributor Konstantin chose Aaron Ramsey as our most consistent player, but the official Arsenal website had a vote in which Ramsey only just beat Nacho Monreal into second with Mesut Ozil getting third.

Ramsey’s 7 goals and 8 assists was hardly world-beating form, but as Ozil only got 4 goals and 8 assists it is fair to say that the Welshman was our most effective midfielder while Ozil was the model of inconsistency. Monreal on the other hand was our best defender all season, and also popped up with 5 goals and 2 assists playing from the back line. A brilliant season, especially at his age…

What about the new boy Lacazette, he started very well despite never being allowed to play 90 minutes, but had a goal-drought blip which was not helped by an injury, but bounced back again at the end and finished as our top scorer with 14 goals and 4 assists. Not bad considering he only started 26 games…

If Aubameyang had been here all season I am sure he would have won the accolade, as scoring 10 goals and 4 assists in just 13 appearances is nothing short of amazing, but we just hope he carries on and wins it hands down next season…

Otherwise I think that Granit Xhaka gets a special mention, for not only providing 7 assists (and one goal) but for managing to go through the whole season without getting sent off, although he did manage to notch up 10 yellows! Is that proof he is improving? lol!

  1. I don’t even know the player to give player of the season. We had below average season and most players didn’t do well judging by their standard.

Abumenyang is my player of the season. However, he just joined the team in January so Ramsey will be my pick. Not because he was extremely good but simply because others were poor or below average

    1. I’m curious to see what Aubameyang can do when facing fresher opponents in the beginning of the next season

      1. Gotanidea thsnk you for saying you like Arteta but Arsenal will not be appointing him.????

        1. It’s going to be Emery. Announcement set on Wednesday. I can’t believe we let Arteta slip through. That guy is the next big thing

        2. Too bad, but Arteta might not be ready yet for such a big job

Besides, Emery could bring some PSG fringe players with him, such as Draxler

We need a left-footed right winger and Draxler is decent winger, if we cannot get Bale, Malcom or Janujaz

    2. Arsenal player of the season is usualy the player with his contract is almost run down which is AARON this season

  2. It should be Monreal, our unsung hero. A defender is usually not dazzling with goal and assist stats, but let’s have a look at his combined attacking and defending stats

Mascherano once got it ahead of Messi, despite Messi’s incredible goal and assist amount in that season. As the reward of Monreal’s great forms in this season, he would join Spain’s World Cup team and I hope Arsenal would give him an extension as well

Xhaka, Lacazette and Aubameyang seemed to work hard to prove themselves, but Ozil did the opposite since he got his new big contract. I expect him to work harder, but he seems to have lost his hunger like Wenger, maybe because he has got La Liga and World Cup trophies

  3. I don’t know what people see in Ramsey, he’s one of the reasons we’ve been average for the last ten years with too many Ramsey like players. How can people on these pages rate him, we get nothing defensively from him, moves continually break down through him and with about 35 league goals in ten years as an attacking player we don’t get much going forward. Anyway more importantly, it looks like the club has had a change of mind regarding Arteta, hopefully with Unai Emery, the former PSG coach coming in instead. I think a possible victory for fan power. I’ve got my fingers crossed.

    1. To be fair to him he did return from career ending injury and we do have loads of No10,s in the team so it’s dificult to shine in that position

      1. Oh! in that case vote him player of the decade. Just get rid of him while we can still get some money for him, he’s not good enough for Arsenal, never has been. Cardiff City, that’s his level. While I’m at it I’d just like to say how pleased I was to be the first with the Unai Emery news with my post at 6-19pm, Gotanidea was still wondering whether Aubameyang is going to be ok next season facing fresher opponents. lol You couldn’t make it up.

        1. You know Ramsey so well! And GotNoidea too! The worrying thing is that there is a ‘report’ (there always is) that says Emery will build his team around Auba (no problem with that) and Ramsey (BIG problem with that). Hopefully Ramsey will be sold to some unwitting club as soon as possible, hopefully Man Utd where he will NOT be the manager’s blue-eyed boy. We can then use the cash to get a good player. A swop of Ramsey for Dembele would also be good if Barcelona are still interested

    1. According to Ornstein the Oracle, Arteta rejected the offer because of the lack of transfer control. Arsenal are in serious talks with Emery currently

I knew that there is no way Arsenal would hire an unproven coach. I hope it is between Emery and Enrique, because of their attacking styles, despite Enrique likes to do some weird experiments with various results

      1. that was a fake account. Ornstein has said nothing. Metro & Marca are not too reliable but definitely seems like Arteta isn’t 100% anymore.

        1. at the same time I dont see Emery being okay with having zero input in the players we get. Which is essentially what the club hierarchy wants. But then again, he did put up with it at PSG, but didn’t end up doing too well

          1. Emery just needs another job, right now he’ll accept any offer as long as it’s good. Arteta would have been the best option. I hope we don’t regret this in the future

      1. Hence my goggle eyed face? but they also announced Santi has left us and also now confirmed by Arsenal.

          1. As you well know Sue if you throw a hundred darts at a dartboard one of them is likely to hit the bull at some time.

  4. I find it strange that same ppl think of Ramsey as the best player a team can have. The lad is always every where in that pitch doing completely nothing to take home. ( I see him and Jack on the same wave length Sorry to say but BUSY BODIES)

  5. carzola leaving at the end of next month. thnx for the memories Santiago. wishing you well.

  6. I go with monreal. Mr Arsenal. Ramsey did well too, Xhaka improved on his first season I reckon he will be better. Personally I expected more from lacazet. I hope he gets his mojo back next season. Since coming to us he hasn’t done anything spectacular ppl praise him but I feel ATM second leg is still fresh in my memory. Ozil has done anything wrong, for me, he does the basic job well, created loads of chances, 89, we just had poor season, that’s all, our defense summarize our season, attack wasn’t bad.
Arteta wants say in transfer dealing that’s y the deal Is stall according to Skye. I think all of u dat has refered to d man as puppet can now see he isn’t and needs apologize. D fact is, arsenal fans are always quick to judge, meanwhile most of u guys knows nothing about what is really happening

  7. Sky reports that Arteta wants control of sales (although I don’t want him it’s correct if he comes he should have a say) we are looking terrible at the moment shoddy average club

  8. My take on the season

Best player of the season – Monreal
Worst player of the season – Mustafi
    Best prospect – Maitland-Niles
Worst performance on or off the field this season – Wenger
    Most improved – Gazidis/board
    Most hated – Kroenke
    Special award – Santi

  9. I’ve got a funny feeling that this search for a manager is going to go on and on for a while longer and it ain’t going to be pretty. Whoever comes in now is probably going to feel like a compromise. That’s why I was okay with Arteta – it was bold and perhaps foolhardy but at least it seemed decisive.

  10. Unai Emery is in London to talk with Arsenal board…. Interesting pick… Not considering his PSG achievements but has won 3 Europa League in 3 successive seasons… So quite interesting…

    1. You know I didn’t want Arteta but I have more respect for him at the mo because he’s saying it’s his way or no way

      1. But I don’t think so Arteta will be given authority to talk on transfers especially when we are having 2 Transfer experts….

  11. Personally I don’t think Ozil has been up to being player of the season. Both Xhaka and Ramsey are positionally inept. I’m struggling to find a player of the year because we have been so rubbish. Wow have we missed Santi! I think I would give it to Jack. He has slowly but surely got better and better, fitter and fitter. We are such a poor team that we need an assertive inspiring manager. NOT Arteta. That would be insane. Where they got Arteta from for manager is weird? I wonder if the board are on a path to self destruction? Strange days indeed.

  12. For goodness sake people do you really believe a decision would be made to buy or sell players without the managers input? And it’s not Arteta turning us down, we are pulling away from wanting him. We wanted Wenger gone, he’s gone. People here didn’t want Arteta, he’s not coming. Power to the people!

  13. No information 100% confirmed now, until It is confirmed by any of d party but I want them to get us new manager on time

  14. Is totally wrong for a manager not to have a say on transfer of players, but I don’t support too much power for the manager

  15. “BREAKING: Arsenal to appoint Unai Emery as new manager. Thorough process produced 46yo Spaniard as unanimous choice. Available after leaving #PSG (1 Lg1 title, 4 cups), previously Sevilla (3 EL wins), not fluent English. Announcement + press conference likely later this week #AFC”

    David Ornstein, BBC

  16. Emery is in and he will have a say in transfer matters but he will not be the sole decision maker like Arsene was.

  17. Its emery then.I just hope he has guts to bench and suggest to “team”(Raul, sven &Ivan) which players ain’t working hard enough therefore be sold.I like his attacking play and I hope he brings in keown to be assistant & manage the defence.announce him quick and let’s start the transfers.looking good I must say.whatever happens we are on a part to rebuilding and its important we the fans make him feel very warmly welcomed

  18. Just saw someone say “confirmed by marca”. Thats the funniest thing i’ve read all week. Anyway maybe we’ve been watching different arsenal teams
because Mesut has been playing so amazing lately its sometimes been hard to choose motm. I think he hit peak form very late in the season(goodie for the german machine, not so much for the arsenal). My player of the season for the simple reason of consistency is Nacho. I can only compare his levels to those of Azpi. Purely consistent. I think its finally paid off considering his goal tally this season and world cup place in a star studded team.

  19. id prefer Allegri or Enrique, but happy if we get emery. At least he has managed football teams and won stuff whilst doing so.

Arteta never pulls out..thats why there are so many little lego figures running around..
seriously, they either dropped the idea coming to some kind of sense or he was never in contention anyway.

  20. Like the big homie from the training ground on the other side of the fence once said – it takes cojones. Looks like Arteta didn’t have them. Never was a captain and certainly not a coach so good luck to whoever ends up with him.

  21. Arteta can still join as Emery’s assistant

The new manager needs a translator and a partner that understands Premier League/Arsenal well

  22. Am going to be brutally honest here, because others are always that way when it’s not a well loved player who plays iffy. Monreal, how the heck did he make second place on the official AFC site. He scored some goals fair enough, but he is here to defend foremost and then support so long as he’s not letting his fellow defenders down. Monreal had patches of utter garbage, I don’t know how many times I seen a ball come from left to right and am left wondering where the heck is Monreal. He’d push up going towards the ball or the play instead of watching the back post area or even looking to see if he’s left anyone behind him. Am not just talking about when it amounts to a goal, even if no goal comes of it that stuff sticks with me and my nerves just go from bad to worse. Only one defender comes out of the season with a good impression, it’s Chambers. I believe Ozil would have won POTS if he hadn’t of dropped his game the moment the ink dried, and that was before going on vacation for real while season was not yet done. So Ramsey rightfully takes the vote. I would put Ozil in second if we are being true to the list. Third I would give to Lacazette, he had Wenger choosing Giroud just when he was getting the feel of things, then he had to cope with Aubameyang arrival which they both made work rather than being all competitive against one another. So Lacazette is my choice but I agree Auba would likely have shot past everyone with an entire season, or even if he had of been allowed to play the Europa I think he could have done enough damage to warrant it.

  23. To me Monreal deserves to be Arsenal’s best player of the year for his consistency and high playing motivation unlike others.
