Who should be Arsenal’s keeper next season?

There are certain to be massive upheavals at Arsenal next season once the new manager comes in but with Gazidis and Wenger both insisting the new man will have to promote youth into the team there is unlikely to be much funds available for new top players.

One position that we should not need to buy is between the sticks, with many still thinking there could be another year left in Petr Cech or we could simply promote David Ospina, which is what Robert Pires believes. He told bwin: “I don’t think Arsenal need to sign anyone to replace Petr Cech because David Ospina is an excellent goalkeeper. Ospina plays well every time he gets a chance and he’s first choice for Colombia. Ospina has been at the club for a long time and I think he should be number 1.”

He may feel he has had enough of fighting for a place at Arsenal but if promised first choice he could stay, but we also have Matt Macey who has patiently been waiting in the wings this year. And We also have Emi Martinez who has been out on loan at Swansea this season and the Swans have only conceded 5 more than Arsenal despite fighting relegation!

Who do you think should be given the spot next season? Or do you think a new top class Number One should be bought in?

  1. First choice Nick Pope and Jack Butland , equally. After seeing Butland in foods of tears today as Stoke were relegated it seems clear he knows he will be leaving this summer. A pro active club would already be well aware of this. Who reckons Gazidis was even watching the game on Sky Sports!

    1. Pope would be a better choice because he managed to make Burnley competitive below Arsenal

Butland comes from a relegation zone club, the same as Mustafi (Valencia) and Evans (WBA), hence maybe his performances were too fluctuative like Joe Hart, Cech, Szczesny and Ospina

If there is no new GK, Cech and Martinez should compete to be the main GK, with Macey as the backup

      1. yeeeeeeees.
What a great day for football, Stoke City relegated, bye bye you absolute mugs, Aaron Ramsey sends his love

    2. Pope is a fantastic shout, and a realistic one at that. An unrealistic option would be Oblak for me. Cech has to go! Past it, and probably on an high wage as well. Don’t mind Ospina as second choice, if he’s happy with that, otherwise replace him as well.

      1. And bye bye Stoke! Beautiful watching Shawcross gift Palace the winner, and send his own team down at the same time. After a long wait, justice is finally done!

    3. If Stan really is serious of competing at the top next year (which is highly doubtful) then the best GK that money can buy right now is Oblak.
Best available defender is possibly Koulibaly from Napoli and the best DM is Fabinho from Monaco. These three alone would cost 200M. Add to that a talent like Ryan Sessagnon from Fulham who can play anywhere on the left wing and a right back to challenge Bellerin and we are easily looking at 250M+
We might make 50M+ from sales of Welbeck, Ospina, Mustafi and Xhaka. So if we do have 200M to spend thats what i’d do. Although I dont think we will have that type of money or ambition or sell Xhaka and Mustafi. So Leno will do.

    4. What about a foreign keeper the likes of Leno or the French sensation labfont or if Madrid gain de gea or donnarruma then Keylor Navas is a solid keeper I would also mention oblak but his price wouldn’t be “the Arsenal way” can’t have a new manager come in and only provide him with the money to buy “homegrown” English players who pope is a good keeper but only has had one or two good seasons or Jack Butland tipped to be the next big thing yet as most English keepers like joe hart David James etc the last few years just stagnated and haven’t progressed yet have regressed

  2. Depends on the clubs ambition or lack of it
Personally I wanted wenger out, I’m not saying it’s all his fault however, soon we will know how much the club wanted to compete.
Get a no one in as manager and 50 mill we will stay where we are and the protests will continue

Get someone in who knows what they are doing and give them a decent budget then Wenger was 80% at fault

    1. John, I think we know well enough by now that Wenger was at fault. It’s true that the stingy owner does not help but Wenger alone picks players, plays them in wring positions, does not coach defence and generally ruins everything. Surely that is universally accepted by now!

      1. Wenger negotiates players contracts; Wenger determines transfer budget, Wenger negotiates transfer fees, Wenger manages the medical team…….let’s just say Wenger Wenger picks the refrees and determine the weather for the match day

        1. He picks them.
          Buys them,
          Trains them,
          Teaches them tactics,
          Motivates them,
          Directs them,
          Plays them,
          Subs them,
          Benches them,
And when they lose, he comes up with excuses to protect them.

          That’s why we blame him.

          1. You arent realisitc. When you buy 30M defender and another goes to buy 75M defender you are expecting magic. Arsene Wenger had managed to turn most of the players into big stars in the past; he has made big money for the club and achieved big things for the club in time past. But it is not going to work that way every time. You must accept that with the way other cluibs are investing and spending big – except something changes..the slide will continue even after Wenger. Watch it.

            1. You have pretty much summed it up in TWO of your comments.”In the past” and “Time past”.The last few years his decision making has been the reason he has been sacked.

              1. Your right Phil, most players Arsene Wenger has bought in recent years ie since Van Persie went to Manchester United, with the exception of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, have been sold at a loss.

        2. Lexynal, in addition I’ve just heard he negotiated the catering contract last year and the beer went up, I hope they give the new guy some staff. Shocking.

      2. You say doesn’t coach defending yet Steve bould is the defensive coach say there next to Wenger for years yet we haven’t had a defense or an enforcer since 04

  3. Pope of Burnley and McCarthy of Southampton are excellent young goalkeepers who would be an upgrade on Cech and Ospina.

    1. I bet De Gea or Neuer would concede a lot of goals if they are guarded by erratic and weak CBs/DM like Koscielny, Mustafi and Xhaka

The priority should be rectifying Arsenal defense first, then focus on the other departments. But tacticians like Allegri, Simeone, Emery and Ancelotti should have known this better than the fans

  4. Hoe I wish we still had Schezny at the Club.He had it all the boy but Wenger got rid and we’ve paid for that mistake ever since. He could have brought Cech in as No1 and demoted Schezny which to be fair he would have deserved for the mistakes he made and the smoking incident at Southampton. He would have learned from his mistakes and would now be our No1 but as always Arsene Knows Best

    1. Wow Phil
      Exactly my thoughts
He was raw with talent and stepped up to be no.1 a tad to early
With a good teacher which he has been getting at juventus he will be top dog with bags of ability

Please ditch ospina. He has no presence
Doesn’t comand his box and puts us under pressure
The number of times I have watched him ..He doesn’t call for the ball
Doesn’t slow the game down when needed and bar 1 great kick the other game his distribution is poor
If we can’t sign another gk this summer then I would rather see a wooden cut out of seaman between the sticks
AW has finally stood down or been pushed but now I want the board to stand up and be counted
Spend the money on the right guy and don’t get a second rate manager on the cheap
We all knew once AW was gone the next man would need to overhaul the squad and need to spend approx 300k plus
Gone in to football hibernation for a while but now can’t wait for the world cup…come on England
And bloody well can’t wait for the start of the new season with a new manger and a new team and a team with a winning mentailty and all of us gooners with a born again new high expectation that we might even achieve
God forbid now that we even still be in the race come march april and not dead and buried by decemember
      Come on you reds

    2. Wenger could have retained Sanchez, he would have been better by now; Wenger could have held on to RVP, Walcot, Ox etc. Woe…unbelieable. When they are under-performing Wenger gets blamed for indulging them for too long and not shipping them out; when he does ship them out, he gets blamed just because of flash of performance (like Walcot socred 2 goals and Ox 3 goals – as if we havent even seen more than before now in Arsenal shirts BUT for consistency). I am sure the next time Sanchez scores an hattrick everyone will be like “why did we sell him…we could have won champion league if he were here”. Some Arsenal fans will never be realistic and objective. Yet they blame Wenger for everything…..even for the trashbin that didnt get emptied.

      1. Shame we sacked him then , eh? Considering he was practically perfect in every way! Nothing was ever his fault , eh? If only we had let him carry on til he is 99 he would have brought us success back. Now, where is that straitjacket of mine?

      2. The trash bin hasn’t been emptied though has it?Its still got Iwobi Bellerin Two Goalkeepers Mustafi Welbeck Xhaka And a few more rustling around in the bottom.
As a point of order nobody has blamed Wenger for selling Walcott. They do however blame him for indulging in a player that continually failed to perform and should have been out of the Club 6 years before he eventually was.Oxlade Chamberlain was not SOLD by Wenger. The player TURNED DOWN a new contract because he DID NOT WANT TO PLAY FOR WENGER.And look how that has turned out for the player.Top performances under a Manager that has been able to improve him in a short time to start looking like the player we all hoped he would be for us.And Sanchez LEFT for professional reasons. He simply did not wish to play for the Club and Manager that proved their ambitions did not match his own.
It’s about time YOU started being realistic and objective as your comments never have substance or even a touch of reality about them

        1. Let’s face it Sanchez left for the money otherwise he would have gone to City. You’re right about the rest though.

      3. @Lexynal are you Wenger’s brother or something? Stop whining the old man is gone get your head around that fact!

  5. Leno has 17.5 buyout clause if we can convince him. That leaves money for new RB to challenge Bellerin, sell Monreal and get backup LB to Sead.

Wilshere leaves on a free, sell Ramsey and use money for DM. Elneny is good enough backup DM.

Sell Xhaka if possible and get CM if we miss Meyer on a free.

Either Ozil as a 10 behind striker or sell for new CM. Ozil is garbage on the wing, and so so stupid and foolishly arrogant to shove Ozil out on the wings to shoehorn Ramsey into midfield. How many times do we have to play so toothless before it stops?
Until Wenger gets fired i guess.

Lastly, FFS can we get an actual winger who can dribble past defenders with pace, create his own shot and finish? Welbeck and Iwobi have repeatedly proven they are unable.

    1. Do not sell Ramsey. With the right manager he will be a top midfielder. He is already our best.

  6. Looking at the glass half full, wenger leaves and stoke get relegated in the same season.
    Not bad

  7. Two CD’ S are needed for sure A DM too and best pay big money for a classy Gk What was wrong with not grabbing Jordan Pickford ? Oh Yeah I forgot A……e W….r knows best Sorry Arsene but you have lost the plot

  8. Wow this site amazes me why would anyone choose Macey or Martinez as number one keeper? You know 3rd and 4thchoice keepers are just there to make up the numbers, if these keepers had any ambition or quality why haven’t they been vocal about lack of game time or want to leave ? Leno Is the only real candidate we should be looking at £17.5 million buy out clause, he’s 1.9m tall commanding and German meaning he would could follow our coach Lehman as a future Arsenal legend. He’s rated 85 on fifa I know that’s not much to go off but surely some stats are used to deliberate those ratings. Personally I don’t want an English keeper as they are over rated just remember how much Hart was praised when City had the formidable back line under Mancini, once that was broken up it was clear he’s a below average keeper yet he can make 25 mistakes then make 5 good saves and he’s brilliant again same can be said about Butland and Forster

    1. Absolutely correct, some comments on here also about wish we’d kept schezny, that’s probably the same people that said he’s a joke and we should get rid not so long ago and at that time they were correct, he is not top draw like Macey and martinez.

  9. Leno or Butland. If Stoke sell Butland for less than 20M then Butland as he is English, if not Leno for 17.5M release clause.

I feel like with Mislentat in charge we will get a few Germans so Leno is the most likely GK purchase.

      1. Yeah totally agree. He showed so much class last week in presenting Wenger with the gift.So much so even Mourinho was humble.Honestly wish him the best

    1. Agree, he’s a great keeper with vast potential and has age on his side. He also has a lot of PL experience and would fit straight in but not worth the £70m Stoke apparently want for him. I think relegation has gone to their heads!!

  10. Arsenal in my opinion need a full overhaul clear the deadwood sell a lot of fringe and waste players like welback etc bring in Leno in net a decent center back like Jose Maria giminez or someone of his youth and experience in my opinion I kind of like xhaka but he should be sold because he’s not a DM we need someone like the old school Vieira style that we haven’t had since Gilberto Silva left many years ago and he wasn’t even that good but he was our last solid enforcing defensive midfielder someone like Johannes geiss or someone of that style like the way Moussa Dembele was this season for Spurs was quite good maybe even raja nangonlan would fit well he can attack but always gets back to defend where xhaka doesn’t, while trying to sneak max meyer on a free transfer wouldn’t be bad either him Ozil and mikhi with lacca or auba upfront the team comes together well but arsenal wouldn’t pay transfer fees release clauses or wages for half of these

  11. our attack isn’t great either. we still need a special player upfront. A winger that loves to dribble and has pace to burn will be perfect. Oblak is an unrealistic target tho
