Why are Arsenal yet to extend Cazorla and others contracts?

Santi Cazorla is out of contract come the end of the season, so why have Arsenal failed to extend his deal?

The Spaniard has been one of our most influential players this season, being one of the first names on the teamsheet when fit, and I can think of no reason why he would be left to run his contract down this season.

Cazorla is being linked with a switch to Juventus at the end of the season when his current deal runs out, and would be allowed to discuss terms over a move outside the UK from January onwards, and I cant comprehend why we would not have tied him down to an extension already.

Per Mertesacker is another star who is out of contract come the summer, and with the defender having been installed as captain in August, despite having already been ruled out with injury until the new year, surely that would mean he is an important player for us?

The defender will have a tough job of breaking back into the Gunners’ first-team line-up thanks to the astonishing partnership formed by new signing Shkodran Mustafi and stand-in captain Laurent Koscielny, as well as having Gabriel Paulista and Rob Holding to vie with for places.

Mertesacker looks destined to have his contract run down, which makes his selection as the club’s skipper a strange occurrence to me.

Yaya Sanogo is the other remaining senior player to be in his final year of his contract, and I have no clue as to Arsene Wenger’s plans for the out of favour individual.

One possible obstacle in place of a Cazorla extension could be the fact that Arsene Wenger himself is in his last year of his contract also. The club may not be willing to allow the Frenchman to make decisions on the future of the squad whilst unwilling to commit the team to him beyond the coming summer, or the player himself may opt to delay his decision until he is aware of his role, which would no doubt change under new management.

Is Wenger’s contract a problem for contract negotiations with players? Does Mertesacker or Sanogo deserve a new deal?

  1. I agree with you. Carzola is very important link between defence and forward.. Neither Ramsey nor Xhaka and Coq could perform this role as he did which is clearly evident from our results.. Sign him sign him..

  2. Santi and Par deserves and extension, more especially the former as we struggle without him, unlike the latter who we don’t miss.

    What is Sanogo anyway??

  3. Barca had to let Xavi leave, Bayern, Shweinsteiger and Madrid had to let Casillas leave, earlier on it was Fernando Hierro, why not us at Arsenal? Recall we held on to Rocisky one season too long, Man. U is still holding on to Rooney. If we want to talk about challenging for the highest honours in the game, we need a bit of ruthlessness. What does Cazorla bring to the team? He helps us transition from defense to attack but so will Xhaka. So why is Xhaka not playing consistently then? Because he is being held to a higher standard than ALL others, if a team is to be built around you, you have to pay your dues, I am certain he knows that and why it seems we are more worried than he is as to why he’s not getting regular game time. He has the physical and mental stature to take this team to the next level and while he exhudes dominance, Cazorla is a technically gifted nice guy and as much as he can outwit opponents, he can’t really impose on them.

    1. Absolute rubbish. Rooney and Rosicky are and were respestively and thoroughly spent. They really had nothing left in the tank to offer. Cazorla on the other hand is our midfield engine…everything goes through him and as soon as he’s out our good form goes out with him. You speak of ruthlessness I speak of fairness. If Diaby and Ramsey somehow crept into the team and held on for donkey years then Cazorla deserves the same..and thats if we can dare compare Cazorla to Ramsht/Diabtch

      1. Cazorla is a legend, I’d love him to leave as one, we need to start prepping for life after Cazorla, if we don’t, injuries like his current one will force us to and who else but Xhaka to take up that mantle? Now our offensive players have to learn to receive the ball overhead, very different from Cazorla who put it right at their feet.

  4. We have to get Verratti to replace Cazorla, I reckon Xhaka was intended to be an upgrade on DM’s we had. Verratti would be ideal to step into Cazorla’s position, he’d be an upgrade to be honest. Not to much between them, but the little differences do make Verratti a more ideal player for that position. Xhaka will come good I believe, Wenger is just being really careful with him.

  5. Why has no one mentioned that the players might want to try somewhere knew before its too late? Or return “home” to retire? or even the fact they are two of the senior statesmen, in their thirties and that injuries are an obvious sign of weakness.

Santi is still an important player for us, but only when he is fit. Unfortunately his absence is now becoming as important as him being there, that needs to be addressed immediately or in January.

Mertesackers absence has been less felt, although missing his experience at the same time as Santi has been clear to see.

Lastly Sanogo, well in my opinion he along with Debuchy will be the first to leave in January. That initially paves the way for Mertesacker and welbeck to return from injury and take their places in our champions league squads, which currently they are not registered for. However, we might also see the likes of martinez, holding, Adelaide and akpom head out on loan which in turn would open up some room for a new signing or two.

Personally, I would offer Santi a 1 year rolling deal like we offered rosicky and give him the captaincy. I would try and sell Mertesacker, debuchy and Sanogo for as much as we could get. I would then look for Santi’s long term replacement and a striker to really make a statement.

From a squad point of view, without alexis on the left, we have to decide is our width giving us what we need? Iwobi, ox, walcott, ramsey, ozil, Welbeck and perez can all occupy the role, but let’s be honest alexis is by far the best option. Unfortunately he is also the best option as striker.

Also, in bellerin, Monreal, gibbs and jenkinson we have 4 decent enough full backs, but I would say bellerin aside, this is another area where weaknesses have been exposed in recent weeks. There is also no real threat from the academy in these roles. Tafari Moore isn’t getting a sniff in Holland, Bola, Johnson and Osei-Tutu are no where near ready. Maitland-niles looked decent when covering, but a couple of good quality teenage full backs would not go a miss.
