Why Arsenal may save Lucas Perez for PSG clash

I have to be honest and say that I have not really seen much of our new striker signing Lucas Perez in action for the club we bought him from Deportivo La Coruna or any of the ones before, so I have to go on what I have been hearing and reading about him.

Most of that, like the Sky Sports report on him yesterday, portrays the 27-year old as a bit of a mix between a Jamie Vardy type, blessed with great pace and counter attacking threat, and our own Alexis Sanchez with great work rate and energy used to harry opposing defenders.

The report suggests that his style of play is more suited to games in which the opposing teams will be playing a high line and this does not apply to Arsenal too often over the course of a season, which is why a lot of people thought that Arsene Wenger trying to sign Vardy from Leicester City was a bit odd.

Our Premier League game this weekend at home to Southampton, for instance, is one in which you would expect us to dominate the ball and be faced with a determined and deep lying defence, so it may not be suited to the Spaniard. Next Tuesday, however, is likely to be a different challenge altogether as we travel to face the French Ligue 1 champions PSG in the Champions League.

It may well be this sort of game which Wenger had in mind when signing the new striker, so do you think Arsenal fans may save him for that match, perhaps with a little run out from the bench on Saturday?

  1. Mr Wenger is probably still debating on his starting lineup for the Southampton game and he is more than likely scratching his head right now…. Who am I kidding? ?
When It’s a 99.9% certainty that he will start with the same team that beat Watford.

It would be a liability if Perez makes his full debut against Nottingham Forest lol ? now that wouldn’t surprise me.

    1. Lol we are 5 points of the top against a Southampton team we have failed to beat before and you wanna change the whole squad?? Sorry but this ain’t a cup game, ridiculous line up ????

  3. @twig. Agree my first thought as well! On Perez from what I’ve seen of him which I admit is not much I’m thinking and hoping there’s more to him than just counter attacking. He seems to have quick feet and powerful shot and is very mobile. Once he clicks with his team mates he could be a gem!

    1. I reckon Wenger sees a bit of Freddie/Pires/Overmars about Perez, a goal scoring winger with pace.

I expect him to slot in at RW seemlessly and if he starts scoring he’ll be a steal.

      1. for the umpteenth time Perez wasn’t signed as a winger, we don’t need more wingers. what we need is a lethal striker.
Wenger should bench Giroud ,start playing Perez up front from kickoff and get it over with.

  4. @arsenalgirl. Interesting to see we actually could field 2 competitive sides but I’m not sure we need to rotate every single position! Bielek and Debuchy! ? 🙁 that back 4 looks too weak for me.

  5. I saw in this article and previous ones where fans are saying that our team shouldn’t be at full strength because we have PSG next week. Now tell me, would u want the first time Kos and Mustafi playing together to be against the likes of PSG? They haven’t trained together for a week so communication and understanding might be a problem.

I say that we either play Mustafi and Kos against Southampton as a preparation for PSG or play Holding and Kos in both games.

We should not weaken our team for Southampton because we are already behind on points and the PL is also a priority.

  6. By the author’s logic it would’ve been a waste of funds to buy players like greizmann auba and lacazette since they would be useless in 80% of our fixture against the teams that sits deep against us smh.. I don’t know who came up with this nonsense that you have to be samson to play against sides who sit and defend in numbers but it’s one of the biggest myth I’ve heard.

  7. start
    Cech
    Bellerin,Mustafi,Kosci,Monreal
    Xhaka,Santi
