Why have Arsenal not extended Kieran Gibbs’ contract yet?

I am getting a little bit worried about the fact that Arsenal have a lot of players entering the last year of the contract this summer. It is not only Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, there is also the likes of Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jack Wilshere and Kieran Gibbs and there have been no rumours in the media about Arsenal even talking to their agents at the moment.

To be honest I’m not too bothered about the Ox, as I am just not yet convinced that he is good enough to ever become a starting XI player for the Gunners. I am hopeful about Wilshere getting through this whole season without injury, but it seems to me that he is drifting away from the wish to remain at the Emirates for his whole career, but I am definitely worried about Kieran Gibbs not yet putting pen to paper.

The English left-back has always been a loyal Gunner and has been a professional for us for nine years, after a few years in the academy, although he has rarely been an automatic starter.

This year he has been called upon sparingley again, although some people think he has been an improvement on Monreal at times, but the fact is that the Spaniard is now 31 and will not be able to carry on making those sweeping runs down the wing for many more years. Although Gibbs seems like he has been here forever he is still only 27 years old and can carry on for some time yet. If Arsenal do let him go, then we may find that we will be in the market for two left backs shortly, not just one.

Should Wenger get him signed up quickly?

  1. I agree with you on the Ox, there are definite upgrades out there that are possible. Now since news of Draxler being available in January I would definitely snatch him up the minute the window opens, regardless of what him and Wolfsburg are going through I’d still get him. Watched a few games with him for club and country and I saw a better option than most of what we have on the wings right now.

As for LB it’s interesting because Monreal hasn’t been the Monreal of last season with age also against him and Gibbs barely gets a look in while he isn’t getting any younger either. Maybe there’s a reason we haven’t heard anything about him extending as I think that’s a position we might look to strengthen as well in the summer. I’ll be keeping a close eye on Alaba in the near future, lol.

  2. I also think Monreal’s form has dropped a bit this year and allowed Gibbs to overtake him as left back, but I don’t think Wenger agrees with me yet!

  3. Kieran Gibbs is in IMO our best left back. Despite him often being on the bench, you never hear reports of Kieran Gibbs going to the media and ‘kicking off’ about this or that. We cannot afford to lose him and he should be rewarded with a contract that reflects our appreciation of his quality and the loyalty that he has shown over the years.
