Why Schalke defender’s transfer is PERFECT move for Arsenal

If this particular Arsenal transfer rumour, then I am one Gooner who is hoping that Arsene Wenger is serious and can complete the deal in the January transfer window, although that is not likely to be easy.

Benedikt Howedes is, in my opinion, the perfect transfer target for Arsenal. The 26-year old a very talented centre back, proven by him already earning 31 caps for the Germany national team, including playing every minute for the World Cup winners at the finals in Brazil this summer.

But the reason I think Wenger will go for Howedes instead of someone like Mats Hummels, apart from the price of course, is his versatility. As well as often playing at left back, Howedes can play anywhere along the back four. But being mainly left sided would bring that extra balance to Arsenal, with Chambers and now Debuchy as cover for Mertesacker on the right.

But as Howedes came up through the ranks at his current club Schalke and has been the club captain for three years or so, he will not be easy to prise away. A report in The Mirror suggests that Wenger is preparing a £15 million bid for him in January, so we will have to see what Schalke make of that and whether Howedes is willing to move halfway through a season which sees his club in the knockout phase of the Champions League.

One thing in our favour, apparently, is that he is good friends with our BFG. So maybe Per could have a little word with his pal and persuade him that the Premier League and the Emirates stadium is the place to be. What do you think Gooners?

I was hoping for a top class defender personally, not just a good utility player. In my view, we have to improve our quality in defence, not just our depth.

Herdes is FAQ from a utility defender. He is one of the top defenders in Germany and is the backbone of that Schalke team. This would be far from a weak purchase

i dont see this howedes thing happening, so we can forget about that, i expect to see, someone who is not cup tied, because wenger going to need some that can compete on all fronts

Even Chelsea have only 6 defenders. I dont understand whats with all these injuries, why there has been no panels to investigate and look into the situation.

Currently, our fully fit squad can easily achieve a second place finish

But do Chelsea have 3 RB’s, 2LB’s and 2CB’s? no. Are chelsea forced to play players out of possition? no, even though they do (Ivanovic originally CB and Azpi RB) haha

Haha we will never know..what we would all give for our players to play one full season free from injury. On the contrary Ramsey, wilshere and Wallcott have been out multiple times in the same season. Very very frustrating indeed!

Seriously. People writting articles like this one are retarded. How will Schalke sell their best defender when they qualified in the last 16th in UCL? In January !

Hmm.. Liverpool losing makes top 4 a little safer. United losing gives us a better chance at third. What do we fancy?

I hope Brendan doesn’t get the sack yet. When a manager is sacked suddenly the whole performance of the team picks up (see Crystal Palace on the opening day) and we play them next week at Anfield. 5-1 horror still comes to mind sometimes.

Hope we pay them back with interest. We have a week rest and they play midweek. No reason we can’t. Just don’t get complacent.
Line up for me would be-
    ————-Szczesny
    Chambers–Debuchy–Mert–Gibbs
    – ——Flamini—Chamberlain
    Sanchez——Cazorla—–Welbeck
    ————–Giroud

Play like the Newcastle/Galatasray game. And just don’t lose.

After the last decade, I’ve learned not keep my hopes high. So I am NOT expecting a top class defender, simply because Wenger considers Mertsacker to be one.

I am hopefull that we will get a decent defender.
CB: New defender, Koscielny, Mertsacker, chambers
    RB: Debuchy, Chambers, Bellerin
    LB: Gibbs, Monreal, Flamini
