Will Arsenal fans be happy with Wenger if we get Lacazette and Van Dijk?

I have just been reading about Mesut Ozil’s tantrum after the German star was chosen to have a drug test after Arsenal’s depressing defeat by neighbours Tottenham. One thing for sure, we know it wasn’t ‘speed’ they were looking for!

Ozil was slammed for ‘going missing’ in the North London Derby, and it would appear right now that there are not too many Gooners that will be upset when the midfielder leaves Arsenal this summer after a string of non-appearances, but the report, by the Mirror’s John Cross, seems to be convinced that Arsene Wenger will definitely be staying on for another two years.

The report said: Gunners boss Wenger is expected to sign a new two year deal with club insiders convinced the 67-year-old Frenchman will stay at the Emirates to try and rebuild the club.

They are targeting big summer deals with Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette and Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk top of their list.

I don’t see how either of those players could replace Ozil, but surely we could just put The Ox in his place and at least we will see some movement from his position. But what do you think about these so-called ‘top targets’ of Wenger? Van Dijk has been getting some rave reviews and could now cost a fortune but I seem to remember Wenger being interested in him when he left Celtic a couple of years ago, when Wenger thought that £10 million was overpriced for the Dutchman. He eventually went to Southampton for £13 million and the rest, as they say, is history!

It would be ironic if Wenger really paid over treble that price this summer…

Lacazette is another that has been linked with Arsenal for some time, and lately the Gunners have been rumoured to be his most likely destination this summer, but just a couple of weeks ago the prolific striker said: “Will this be my last few months at Lyon? It depends which teams will be on offer to me,”

“I am prepared to leave, but only to make a significant leap forward.

“Otherwise, nothing will happen.”

So, the question has to be asked; Is Arsenal a step up from Lyon? The French side are in the semi-finals of the Europa League, and Arsenal will probably be playing in that competition next season. That is hardly a big attraction is it?

So, I don’t think either of these two will actually come to Arsenal, but if they did would you be happy for Wenger to stay?

  1. What does it matter?

As long as Wenger is in charge, nothing will change. His non-existent tactical intelligence, stubborn formation sense and endless trust on average players, will make any player a deadwood in the matter of months.

Wenger is the cancer of this club. Cancer. Football has gone forward, young managers have adapted to that change. Wenger has not. Therefore Arsenal FC has not. We have been stalling for years.

In today’s game you can’t go on to every single game with the same tactics (or the lack of it).

    1. Yep and Kroenke can go too.

It doesn’t matter who Wenger signs, he has become a specialist in failure.

      1. I’m still out on who is the real problem at the club. Kroenke? Wenger? Players? In my mind it’s a combination of them all, one thing for sure is the time has come to back him or sack him and be very public about it.

If he refuses to spend then again he must be sacked. Usmanov is another who needs to put his money where his mouth is. He should be contacting Kroenke and offering to buy him out, not contacting the media and talking a good game.

As for the players they should be taking a long hard look at themselves, questioning their effort, then man uo and make decisions.

But back to the article, the answer is no, bringing in just those 2 is not anywhere enough. On Sunday I looked at the 2 sides and you see only 1 player of ours that would get into the spurs side. That is a sad indictment of the current regime

        1. To be fare its been reported many times that Usmanov would love to buy out Kroenke but Stan wont sell a single share

        2. History shows that Wenger has been given money to spend. Unfortunately it also shows that he wastes the said money on dross.

  2. Urrrr moving to arsenal would not be ‘a significant leap forward’.

Regardless of who is rumoured or completely fabricated to be a target it is absolutely irrelevant at this point in the clubs history. If AW stays we will tread in mediocrity like we have for the last 13 years.

No signing, Be that Messi, Ronaldo, Griezmann or anyone else will change that.

  3. The problem we hve is not about player signings its about the manager. I will take no ttansfer activity at all but a new manager with the same players than wenger wasting money. Guys an overhaul and rebuilding is work of a younger and new manager. This just shows that arsenal hve no intrest in parting ways with wenger. 2 years come on that will be like 4 or more. Which manager will move on after rebuilding?

    1. totally agree with you
there is no confidence left in the team and that’s the job of the manager, i believe we have still youngish but with huge experience team and the right manager and not a father figure will achieve wonders but time is running out

        1. Simeone is apparently not compatible with our board members (perhaps because he wants to win and is passionate?) and Barca are rethinking appointing Koeman because he has a big buy-out clause of 6 or 7 million pounds.

I like Jardim, he is like Koeman in that he has shown to be able to get teams to become competitive without big budgets. And he is a tactician. I also still like Allegri but I guess he is of the table.

Is there any other big name coach who would come to Arsenal? In today’s football most potential top managers will enquire about the available rebuilding budget and with Kroenke that might not be the type of budget needed to rebuild. I think to make this squad winners if Sanchez leaves, we need to spend at least 300 million.

Two world class players is the minimum you need and in our case that should be a striker who will cost around 100 if world class and a play maker who could run you 75 million. Next to that you would need an other CD now that Kos is getting on in age and is injury prone this will run you an other 50 million quite quickly and then you might want to consider getting a quality DM and winger.

Oh, and to answer the article I really don’t think it will matter who we sign if Wew=nger stays but don’t expect big names if he does stay. Having said that Wenger is better at signing cheap players than expensive ones IMO. Compare what he paid for Elneney and Holding to Mustafi and Xhaka and ask yourself how much we got for the extra 60 million. Would our line up be so much better if we played Mustafi and Xhaka over Holding and Elneny? Not an easy answer for me.

  4. Even if we spend big this summer, what difference would it make if wenger stays? …huh?

  5. Has fans come out and protest that we want the club to be like Chelsea or City?

If not the board will not be pressured to spend, to sack and to release players and managers

  6. Many people on Just Arsenal have pointed out that we’ve changed the stadium, players, owner, medical team, scouts and assistant manager, but it’s still the same old Deja Vu every season. Our transfer targets can see this problem as well.

There is only one way Arsenal FC would be able to convince real top-class players to come to the club, and that is to employ a new manager, with a good reputation for being competent and hungry to win top-honours.

Appointing a credible manager is far more important than staying in the Champion’s League every season. Man U have missed ECL recently and yet highly-rated players like Pogba and Ibrahimovic still came to play for Moureen, because they know the club has the genuine intent to win major trophies.

    1. Don’t kid yourself or anyone else that Pogba and Ibra went to ManU because of the club’s ambitions. They are mercenaries and went there for money, and money only.

  7. Would they not want CL football?

  8. I don’t think Van Dijk and Lacazette would be interested in moving to Arsenal, but if they do, I would be very happy. But it will not solve Arsenal’s problems, because Van Dijk is just a strong, tall, quick and good defender like David Luiz. Whereas Lacazette is just another in-form goal-getter like Suarez. What Arsenal need are players that can really play the ball with his feet, not just fast and physical monsters.

If Arsenal will let many midfielders go next season, then we would need two playmakers that can dictate the tempo and has strong mentality. Maybe only the likes of Mahrez, Sigurdsson, Joe Allen, Pjanic, etc that would be willing to move to Arsenal next season.

    1. #Laca is good but Get #PatrikSchick and #Dolberg too!!! Get rid of #Lucas

  9. Nice One.. But we must have signed him couple of yrs ago! now Van Dijk looks unrealistic with City n chelsea competing for him.
Our major problem this season was Santi’s injury!! Santi is our engin.
The void left by santi is not filled up by Ramsey or anyone!!
the game against chelsea at Emirates clearly tells how important is Santi Cazorla for us.
Who is gonna fill up the void left by him, surly he is aged n can only bit part role due to injury.

Mentality and attitude to win big games are very poor,Away games stats clearly tells about it.
With such performance and stats we will never win the league.
Midfield is the heart of a team but our team loose de balls easily and none is holding up n distribute as we do early.
What Arseanl Fc really need now!!! A Positional CB!!! when bellerin goes forward, I dont want Mustafi to go along with him, It can create a easy void when opp counter attacks! well u can understand what I saw.
    #AFC must scout #GermanConti #RubenSemedo #DeVrij #Diop#JonathanTah
    #HarryMaguire #Heintz.

Personally I feel #RubenSemedo could be good.

    For MF, We must scout #Tielamans #MilinkovicSavic #Goretzka #Rabiot #WalaceSilva
    #Dendoncker #Bazoer #LorenzoPellegrini .
Personally Comment: #YouriTielamans would be the perfect choice to replace Santi, But we still need a Steel in the MF like #Goretzka or #Dendoncker or #Walace.

We really need to replace some fan fav players like Ozil and Ramsey!! but I know it could be hard to take..
I have a good list of players in all position but I dont wana reveal it now ..But what ever I tell that will be true with in couple of yrs!!!

    1. Are you afraid that if you reveal your list of players for each position that Wenger will steal it?

  10. Le Prof starting his favoured players and not varying their positional play in our last Spurs game and not starting a competitive Arsenal team starts had led to our 2-0 lost at the Lane in my opinion.

Just look at my starts whom I’ve started for the match and compare them with those started by Le Prof for the match and judge by yourself.

    My 3-4-2-1 starts:.

    Cech
    Paulista Holding Monreal
    Bellerin Ramsey Xhaka Chamberlain
    Sanchez Ozil
    Welbeck.

    Le Prof’s 3-4-2-1 starts
    :
    Cech
    Paulista Koscielny Monreal
    Chamberlain Ramsey Xhaka Gibbs
    Sanchez Ozil
    Giroud.

Save Giroud for Walcott, Le prof’s starts in this Spurs game are virtually the same starts he started in our last home game against Leicester. A match in which Arsenal struggled but managed to score a late winner via Montreal’s last gap effort.

Now, my starts were to a motivated competitive starts intended to galvanize the Gunners to beat Spurs last Sunday. I started Holding centrally as one of the 3 CBs in the Arsenal back-line over the will not be 100% big match fit Koscielny. And I took the Ox from the right wing back to play left wing back while I brought in Bellerin to play right wing back to give potency to Arsenal midfield attacking prowess and confuse Spurs markings in the game as the Ox is switched to LWB.

I for his pace over Giroud, I decided to start Welbeck to lead the line. But what did we see Le Prof doing? He stuck to his favouritism starts instead of to galvanize the Gunners into a win at the Lane by making a competitive starts for the match. So, even if he buys Messi and Ronaldo , he has stop playing a family team starts but plays a competitive Arsenal team starts always before Arsenal will resume winning the PL.

  11. Ozil drug test i presume he was not tested for PERFORMANCE ENHANCING drugs, if it was he wasted his money they are not working!!!

  13. No because we need a Defensive/holding midfielder too

Lacazette is fine as long as Alexis stays
Otherwise we need Lacazette and another Top winger

    1. How about JOB VACANCY:

Difficult rebuilding job with burned out and disillusioned fans and squad. Fans understand football so no expectations for the first three years and even a little structure will make both the fans and players happy in the first year. Results not required initially as long as a clear and strong identity emerges out of these ashes. Only job requirement is to bring back to life to this club on game days, even if initially you are the main attraction yourself.

Tell the fans the truth, don’t make excuses and don’t speak about winning the PL and never ever mention 4th place is a trophy and a target even if you think it is. Leave it to the fans to determine if you had a good season or to Sam P although he might not like you if your last name is not Wenger.

PS: would be nice if you rule on meritocracy (don’t show favoritism) and thus play your best players as often as you can, and feel free to show some desire and passion to win games and also please feel free to manage games as they happen.

  15. I will take anyone at this moment in time!! Giroud has proven over the past 5 seasons that he isn’t good enough to take us to the next level! And Welbeck, although he has all the tools to make a top striker, has terrible finishing and has never been prolific! Both are good back ups but no where near the quality needed!!!

  16. I’d love us to grab Laca and VvD especially off we secured them early into the window, but at about 50m each I can’t see it happening lol but if rumours are true then ‘apparently’ we have 100m to spend. So then we would have to then sell our deadwood to purchase a top CM/DM which shouldn’t be a problem as it would help strengthen the spine of the team. I don’t know who we should (or could get) but I hope they are a beast in the middle of the park, along with decent passing/creativity. Feel free to suggest some names (Rabiot? Goretzka? Vidal? Bakayoko? Keita? Nzonzi? Gueye? Etc? I’m just spitballing names lol)

  17. Getting Lacazette is the relatively easy part. It is the other pieces of the jigsaw that are equally important, like who the rest of the team will be and who manages the team. Without everything taken into consideration we will struggle next season.

  18. Van dijk would be great as he is a leader he will compliment mustafI n kosceilny well by replacing bfg

Chambers return can be done by selling debuchy n jenkinson to make space (ox the new rwb)

Sell ozil as our new formation doesn’t rely on a sole cam for him to demand such high wages…45m

Naby keita is the player we should target for our midfielder he is a mixture of santi and Kante 20m

Goretska would also be a good signing as he has it all in his locker plus stature. 20m
