Wilshere hails Arsenal squad depth as sub Giroud saves blushes

Jack Wilshere and Olivier Giroud came off the bench to help Arsenal earn one point away at Southampton today, and the midfielder has hailed his squad strength.

The Gunners have a host of top players waiting patiently for match minutes including the aforementioned duo, and the pair keep showing their worth to the team with impressive displays.

Many are hoping that Jack will stay fit and push for a role in the first-team, and the midfield star is just enjoying his football at present, and hailed his super-sub team-mate Giroud for his equaliser today.

“I think it shows the depth in our squad,” he told Arsenal.com,

“For me Oli is one of the best strikers in the Premier League when he’s on it and he’s on the bench, so it shows what we’ve got. There are a lot of games in December, so I’m sure he’s going to get a start and if he’s coming on scoring goals that’s massive for the team and it was an important goal for him today.

“I’m enjoying it,” added Wilshere. “I’m enjoying playing and I want to play as much as I can. I’ve said before that I’ve missed way too much football and I’m just enjoying it at the minute.

“I don’t think it was our best team performance, but we showed character and dug in at the end and if you can’t win a game, don’t lose a game. We might look back at the end of the season and see it as a valuable point.”

How important will Giroud and the rest of our extended squad be over the tough December schedule?

  1. Time for Wilshere to start matches.

And bring Holding into the starting XI as well.

We can’t rotate Wenger though, can we?

    1. wenger knows what hes doing
only 17 points behind man city and its already early December

we will win every game from here on out- no question
i cant wait to dismantle city at the etihad ..united at trafford…
i cant wait for wenger to lift the title this season
i cant wait for ozil to stay an sanchez and van persie to have never left

      coyg

  2. If only we had a manager that could make good use of the “Depth in our squad” and do a proper job of coaching defence.

  3. Arsenal were a shambles in the early running
Saints could have been 3 up at half time
Arsenal were pretty poor today I am tired excuses for Arsenal underachieving. Wilshere and Giroud are necessary elements
    to maintain Arsenal sanity.

  4. throw everything including my nan into the europa league
cos we are not a top 4 team

january window will see benzema higuain dybala and goro from mortal kombat arrive twice a week…thanks to arsenal mole darren afcpablo
we will go on a run…
no, no sorry- on the run..those gate prices are criminal!

honestly when wenger goes we will miss the drama..
    we will i swear it

  5. I would put money on the eleven which won well on Thursday to beat the abject team which was fortunate to draw with Southhampton. The back three today were at best poor .The need for quality centre backs is evident to all (apart from AW) Please AW give Holding and Chambers an opportunity to prove themselves in the Premier League Mert and Koc are clearly finished and Mustafi is far too erratic to make a lasting impression

  6. Sorry to disagree strongly with the writer and Wilshere BUT patently we do NOT have a deep squad in top quality, merely in numbers who have Prem experience. Our only real top quality players are Sanchez and in theory Ozil, some of the time. Maybe Cech is still good enough. Maybe. Maybe not. Not one decent CB apart from the fast aging and regressing Koscielny. Mustafi is OK only and all the others just not up to defending properly. Not a good enough CDM since Gilberto left and the so called CDM’s we do have , the appalling Xhaka, Coquelin and at a pinch Elneny, would not get anywhere near the squad of our top rivals. No proper winger at all, – I do not count Walcott, since he is thankfully out of the eighteen and long may he stay out – just a succession of average central midfielders or strikers over the years played wide and out of position for many years past. Kolasinac was having a good season but seems to have gone off sharply recently. We do have several just average or slightly better than average players and some that were regarded as good have gone bad, notably Bellerin who looks out of his depth at times and the other one is of course Koscielny who looks shot or unfit and is not doing the job he did so well for years past. Wilshere himself is among the most talented and is a fighter and MUST now play from the start. I do like GIROUD but he is hardly top drawer(like Aguerro, Kane, Salah etc) We have no depth of central midfield creators, just the soon to be gone Ozil and Jack who is not yet first choice, bizarrely. Ramsey is still Ramsey , having the odd good spell but over the years not good enough at top level Frankly that does not add up to a DEEP IN QUALITY squad and we have Wenger to “thank” for that. There are several as yet unproven but possibly promising young fringe players but we cannot base a prospective title challenge(as if!) on them. So Mr Wilshere , I admire your loyalty to your employers and YOU at least do try your best. But to call this a deep squad is nonsense. Perhaps you meant to say MAN CITY , Jacko, then you would be right!

    1. chech is poo and useless , did u see edersons double save , he just won two point for city, I thought it was in but he managed to deny lukaku and mata WTF

  7. Wilshere is right. It might just be agood point. A point that gets us that 5th place again! At this rate we should be so lucky because 8 points from our away games so far tells the story os a team with issues. The same issues we’ve had for years. A lack of progress and a progression of decline in points and results. Its not ending any time soon, trust me. It will only get worse unless a major change happens. We’ve all heared that before though!!

    Onward and downward!

  8. last week we witnessed mustafi just gave up and asked to be subbed.
this week we witnessed mertesacker ran faster than theo to get out of the game.

They both killed the games before 10 min. Just when we were focusing on ozil and alexis problems up front, looks like we got bigger problem at the back. Sigh…….
