The day we have all been waiting for takes a step closer to becoming reality this week. Arsenal have arranged an under-21 friendly fixture with London rivals Chelsea which will be played behind closed doors tomorrow.
The idea is to give out talented young midfielder Jack Wilshere as much of a full game as possible to continue with his sharpening up. It will be Wilshere’s third competitive outing since recovering from his recurring ankle problem, picked up in a pre-season friendly against the New York Red Bulls last summer.
Hopefully this game will put Jack on the brink of a first team appearance if it all goes according to plan. Arsene Wenger does not want to rush him, but Wilshere is straining at the leash, and could even be on the bench for the game against Norwich on Saturday.
It is more likely that Wilshere could see some action next Wednesday when Schalke come to the Emirates for matchday three in the Champions League. Failing that, there is another reserve match next Monday against Everton.
Bacary Sagna and Emmanuel Frimpong will join Wilshere for the game tomorrow. The French right back is thought to be almost ready to play again and will be keen to regain his starting place from the vastly improved Carl Jenkinson. Sagna and Frimpong the destroyer could both be in the squad that travels to Norwich on Saturday. Premier league beware!
