WOW! Welbeck stats suggest Arsenal get Giroud upgrade!

I can understand why Arsenal fans are less than thrilled about us signing Danny Welbeck. After the hope of getting Falcao and due to the last minute nature of the transfer, it feels like Arsene Wenger is settling for second best, but I have just been looking at Welbeck’s stats for last season and you will not believe what I found.

Remember that he only played 25 Premier League games for Man United last season, with quite a few of them as sub and that he was not in the centre forward position which he is likely to take for Arsenal. According to the comparison matrix on Squawka.com and going by a score per 90 minutes, Welbeck beats the Frenchman in most of the key areas.

His overall score (27.39 to 18.1), his attacking (24.1 to 22.33), his goals scored (0,55 to 0.47) and his shooting accuracy (53% to 43%) are all better. Giroud comes out better on assists and chances created but he was playing down the middle and Arsenal did have a much better season than United in general.

Welbeck is also faster so can offer different options and he is only 23-years old. So before you make up your minds that Welbeck is a second rate striker and that his transfer to Arsenal is a disaster, maybe we should give him a chance to show us what he can do down the middle with the likes of Ozil, Alexis and Walcott around him.

    1. Some of you guys might have seen these comments cut and pasted below already but makes for interesting reading coming from Man U fans – not sure how representative they are but all the same:

“danny welbeck has got talent, you arsenal fans saying wenger out haha some fans you are, good luck danny and shut some of these daft gooners up..”

“So we get rid of Welbeck, Nani, Hernandez and Kagawa. But Cleverly, Anderson, Fellaini, and Fletcher still remain ?? Something seems to be very wrong here! Or is it just me??
LVG i hope you know what you’re doing!”

“United need to keep Welbeck. Yes we may have Rooney, RVP and maybe soon Falco but he is the only striker with pace”

“Danny will be fantastic for Arsenal and will be a hit with the fans. All Danny gets judged on his is goal ratio. But yet he has only played a hand full of games as a number 9. At 23 give him the freedom and I honestly think in 2 years time he could be the complete forward. Arsenal fans who are gutted about welbeck trust me the ones who go to games regular you will love him and appreciate how direct he is. Welbeck speeds our play up and we look more dangerous when he is playing than not”

“Dannys the best english striker at the mo i wish him all the best at his new club. GGMU

“As a United fan I really wouldn’t want this player to leave. I think his energy and work rate is magnificent but realistically speaking he wouldn’t be starting over RVP and Rooney. If Arsenal does get him, they got a good player and someone who is willing to give his all IMO. All the best Welbeck if you go and nuff respect mi boss…”

    2. Goals count not stats, you can try and dress this transfer up as much as you like but the facts are it’s a second tier signing of an average player,we needed an upgrade on Giroud who doesn’t do the business in the big games not another nobody, remember his World Cup performances …..no neither do I.
      Absolutely gutted

  1. This is exciting times at Emirates where Giroud has become the scale to sign strikers. We are definitely moving forward.

    1. finally somebody sane. Two hours ago, every horrified of Welbeck signing, two hours later when were about to end up with nothing, people happy. People getting tricked by wenger by making us desperate. Welbeck is a good signing if your fighting for 4th place, and it appears that we are.

      1. 4th place team? City, Chelsea, Manure, Liverpool, all have made some incredible improvements, even Everton is a major threat a team that beat us 3 – 0 last season and almost beat us again over a week ago, if it wasn’t for the injured Giroud with an equalizer we’d have lost. 4th place is no longer guaranteed.

          1. No, definitely not, just saying that we haven’t strengthened to the level where we can say we will 100% finish 4th again with the competition we have, that’s the problem, we need to up our game extremely. Of course i’d hate to finish fourth, i want us to win, but to ensure any chance of that we needed to strengthen our defense and our attack but didn’t, and now i’m very very worried, as you don’t win anything by scoring no goals and conceding many.

  2. In fact, you know what I am going to say it

GET IN THERE MY SON. WELLBECK SIGNED. Lets start smashing those goals in

      1. No not really

Cazorla put through a great ball for Sanogo against Leicester and he smashes it at the keeper.

Get Wellbecks confidence up and he will be banging them in all day long. Be positive bro

    1. I won’t hate on Welbeck, I said a couple weeks ago he has power, pace, passing ability so would do well in our system.

      BUT…

Tell me why we’ve missed out on Falcao? If someone says ‘money’ or ‘ridiculous wages’ they can sod off. We need a DM and CB cover, neither look like they’re happening, so the least we could have done is splurged on Falcao as a solitary signing.

Wish you well Danny, but shame on you Wenger. 2 players short AGAIN.

      1. Well unfortunately mate it is money. When you are CEO of your own firm, I will ask you how you feel about paying 350k every week for an injury prone player.

        1. FIFA14 prints money !

Radamel Falcao’s season-long loan to Manchester United will cost the Old Trafford club a staggering £24 million, with the forward’s £265,000-a-week before tax salary being paid in full by United.

24 four FACKING million for ONE season; you people have lost your bloody minds.

        2. He’s not injury prone, please don’t be that guy. He had an injury but he’s back scoring. He’s top class, comparable to ANY #9 in world football. You pay what it requires for those players or you end up with players that lead to ‘what could have been’ type seasons.

Real, Barca, City, Chelsea, Bayern, United, PSG all pay top dollar when they need to. And who are your faves for honours this year.

          1. Ill repeat for you: When your CEO, I would love to know how you feel about paying that much every single week.

As far as I am concerned Bergkamp, Henry and Zidane rolled into one player isnt worth 350k per week

            1. I’d feel fine about it because it’s a requirement to have world class players.

Love how fans change their tune when we miss out on talents. As if Falcao would have been a waste of fu*king money. It’s this overly responsible point of view that keeps us on the periphery of being title contenders.

Henry would cost 50mil in 2014, Bergkamp 30mil but we have Giroud 15mil and Welbeck 15mil.

              1. Charlie boy: I agree with you to some extent

But come on mate 350k per week is beyond insanity, I am sorry but it just is.

                1. Look mate it’s pricey, but it’s football at THE very elite level.

I like Welbeck and wanting Falcao is in no way a slight on him…..Falcao is just better.

We pay THE highest prices in world football and I’m a little annoyed that other clubs get to make the dream signings they require whilst we go for economically viable ones ALL the time. Falcao would sell tons of merchandise.

Last summer Gazidis was asked if Arsenal could pay 30mil and 200k wages for Rooney, he categorically stated we could DO THAT AND MUCH MORE. But look what happens when the opportunity is there, he backpeddles back across the Atlantic. We are all talk at Arsenal, the others act and win the titles.

      2. “Radamel Falcao to earn £265,000 a week as Manchester United pay £24 million for season-long loan deal.” source:Telegraph

        He can SOD OFF!

              1. Not as much difference as you think. Every business anywhere in the world at any time in history has two principle objectives; make a profit and stay in business. You maximise the chances of staying in business by not taking unnecessary or abnormally high risks. Falcao as a footballing proposition is bit of a no-brainer, as a business proposition not quite so attractive. Man U performing a business/footballing high-wire act at the moment – be pissing myself if they don’t make top 4.

            1. He was bought for 42.4mil (BBC)
              His annual wages are 6.8-7.2mil
So annually when you spread the costs over his 5 year contract we pay 15.68mil a year to have Ozil. (42.4/5 + 7.2)

Except you renegotiate a players contract at least a year ahead of time and pay them a sign on fee. So in reality spread it over 4 years and we pay 17.8mil.

Falcao is pricey, but he’s arguably the worlds BEST #9.

  3. Coz giroud is dog shxt let’s get behind welbeck .. Give him some confidence and hopefully he gets us 15 BPL goals

  4. What is an Opgrade? Sounds like we’re planning for him to get injured before he’s played a game for us.

    1. Falcao is a BIG GAMBLE!
24 million pounds for a player just off an ACL tear?

One more ACL tear and he is done till Transfer Day 2015.

  5. I’m as pissed off as all of you, but once the transfer window shuts we need to get behind our team and welbeck if we get him. COYG

  6. he is bettre than giroud i mean he has pace, strength can hold up play.Yes 16 million is the same as balo but we are also playing for the potential. Now AW should be trying to cavarlho no matter what.

    1. Welbeck is going to be a great help to us when OG is back he can play on the left wing where we have had no one decadent since Samire Nasri with his pace and strength he could become our best wale sighning.

  7. Very disapointed that we didnt bring in a world class striker…
But tbh I always liked Welbeck when he played for England. Well at least his earlier performaces. Who knows maybe hes going to be our Sturridge…

  8. They got RVP, we got welbeck, p*ss on u arsene and gazidis. U might as well sign Ngog, he’s french and a free agent

    1. RVP has been playing with injections whole of last season and now he needs a operation his crear is almost done and dusted.

  9. Only positive about welbeck is pace and workrate might make us more balanced but still whos scoring us the important goals in the big games.

  10. stats will be unfair welbeck has constantly been played out of position he has never had a long crack in cf so lets see how he gets on just get behind the lad he may come good. he has a winning mentality is hard worker and is still very young has many years experience in big games/

was welbeck my first choice no i wanted the likes of calvani falco etc just like the rest of us but reality is were getting welbeck so no point crying about it. its either him or sonogo

  11. i can not find it on sky sports at all so i dont believe a word of it yet get a source that reliable then we can talk coyg

  12. Honestly I am more concerned with out defensive depth right now rather than Welbeck. To think that only 7 defenders (including bellarin) for 4 competitions is extremely worrying.

    1. I feel exactly the same. If we got a DM the. Chambers could be the 3rd CB. If we got a CB, chambers could be the DM.
But now i looks like neither will happen
we will end up with monreal and flamini having to be emergency cover more frequently this year

      1. So you are more concerned with defence than strike? Did you watch the game yesterday? Biggest weakness by a country mile was Sanogo.

Right now players in defence would have to get injures to get to a place where a rookie starts. Right now that is already happening in the striker position.

        I seriously don’t get some fans……..

        1. Gibbs and kos are already injured. What happens if mert gets injured?! Hayden in defence?!
Defence led to 20 goals being conceded in 4 games.
We’ve made an addition to our strikers with welbeck.
You’d have to be retarded to think our defence is fine.

          1. So you need more injuries to get Hayden into the team. Thanks for proving my point. Sanogo is ALREADY a first team player unless a striker is signed.

  13. Of course this is an upgrade to Giroud. Welbeck is tall, fast, has stamina/high work rate, and decent strength. We can beef him up and he just need to work on his finishing, his main weak point for a striker.

Chelsea fans say he is better than Remy and United fans rate him. Maybe he’ll do a Sturridge under Wenger, after all he might just need confidence and a central role.

Anyways I don’t care anymore, if Welbeck becomes an Arsenal player, I will support him fully like any Arsenal player who works hard.

  14. Basically no worse than giroud better than remy and way better than sonogo…. With Sanchez it’s a pacey and hard working attack … Basically Wenger’s bid to secure 4th place…. But We would have been better just bringing in cavalho as our defence is a train wreck in the making against top teams

  15. So if we were in for a striker after all, why the actual f**k are we picking up Welbeck off all people on deadline day?!

Costa, Balotelli, Remy, Lukaku, Eto, Falcao and others. all proved themselves available this window. It is therefore nothing but absolute mismanagement to end up with Welbeck after having the whole summer to buy a forward. Wenger out.

    1. Costa was tied up with Chelsea way, way back. Lukaku was always going to stay at Everton. Prefer Welbeck to Remy and Eto’o. And Falcao……well thats another story.

  16. so now we have sold Man Utd RVP, and helped them fund a move for Falcao, while also getting rid of their deadweight. This is what AFC has become, and some people are okay with it. Shocking…

    1. Trust me, DW does not stand for deadweight. I get the fact that you’re disappointed, a lot of us are, but enough of the hyperbole.

      1. its not a hyperbole.
Fact: We sold RVP to Man United
Fact: We have helped them come up with money to sign Falcao
        Fact: Falcao>>>>>>>Welbeck

  17. Welbeck has a point to prove. Could be a half decent signing…better than nowt!

One more signing would do ok, two more would be good..

  18. I actually quite highly rate Wellbeck, and Fergie (dont judge me) did also. He is a player constantly played out of position, much like Sturridge and Rambsey were, but once they were given regular games in their main positions… He certainly gives us something different to Giroud and will hopefully give Sanogo some time and pressure to improve.

  19. Lads don’t keep hating on Welbeck, much rather someone that WANTS to play for Arsenal than a mercenary. Get behind the lad and you maybe very surprised. I got a good feeling about this transfer.

  20. wenger said we would get defensive signings in quality and quantity and he also said we would spend the money on players that is better than what we got welbeck is no better than sanogo so no upgrade there really and am really surprised that united would deal with us at all

  21. Desperately Need a proven goal scorer ie like Costa but looks like wenger is adding another good honest work horse to the stable to keep Giroud company!

      1. Yeah like they weren’t aware they were gonna have lesser team-mates or something. Make them earn their money.

  22. I couldn’t care less if we signed a vegetable samosa to play up front, that would be an improvement on Sanogo.

He is an England international so people must see something good in him, it might just be a confidence thing and with the likes of Ozil, Sanchez, Ramsey, Wilshere and Cazorla supplying the chances I think he is a 20 goal a season striker or perhaps even better….

  23. Welbeck – Not made out for a striker. Body dynamics all wrong. Falls down at crucial goal scoring moments. Centre of gravity is off. Check these words at the city game this week. Oh my, what a torture this season gonna be. Not being negative but being realistic! Bony much better.

  24. This is we hers biggest lie, I’ve been a fan fo most of my life and travel half the country to watch the team, but I am finished until wenger is gone no more lies, you can all get behind what ever you want but the boos will ring out when we suffer a loss, and god help our champions league
16 million 16 f ing million Bomy had a release of 20 OMG Man U fans taking the p

    1. A United reject? Doesnt he possess a EPL medal
from the 12-13 season. Sometimes I really wonder about the collective intellect of the Gunner Nation

      1. Aaaaaaaaaaaah ! How soon they forget !

They want big stars, but the WEEP about ticket prices.

        Radamel Falcao’s reported wages at Manchester United: £346k a week,£49.5k a day, £34 a minute

  25. He allegedly only wanted Arsenal and forced the move, let’s give him a chance…in a 4-4-2 with Sanchez we could have two forwards with exceptional work rate. An example for the rest of the team.

  26. so do u people think with welbeck and co that we will win the league and go far in the champion league, no ambition at all.

  27. All you Welbeck haters should get behind the team. Word dat he turned down those chicken crest spuds for Arsenal now thats what i call a legend in the making. Danny works really hard for the team even die hard Manure fans are gutted to see him leave. His work ethic and Sanchez are unbelievable. with Walcot coming back as well im just licking my lips with the pace and quality we have in the team. Now lets get a CB and maybe a DM because with a fit Arteta, Flamini and Diabi in the team its gonna be hard to accomodate all. Gunners 4 life now lets tear the PL up!

  28. 45 mins only remaîong. Its like wenger is
    Not winning his poker
    Got the chance and
Maybe je Will win for us
    But i am discusted of
No cdm cb and st(world class player )

  29. Arsenal fans. Welbeck will solve our striker problem. Let’s just hope we do get him and it’s not a loan. Keep in mind that he plays behind Rooney and Van Injury, otherwise he’d be starting.

We don’t have to break the bank and we get the right player. This is the smart business that we should have done months ago.

I may make him my favorite current player behind Rosicky. I’ve been that impressed with how he goes about his business on the pitch. Fingers crossed, but not holding my breath.

  30. Opinions divided i guess.. Maybe I’m to optimistic but still convinced that Welbeck will have a better season at Arsenal then Falcao at united. Please leave your email in the reply section so i can rub it in your faces time come, you ungrateful little bitches.

  31. 23 years old, young England player, will be good with Wilsher and the OX, strong, fast, something to prove, why not. What’s the problem, With the Prof’s guidance he may become another TH. Give him a chance he’s an Arsenal player now, make him wellcome. Up the Gooners

    1. Forgot to mention Theo, when he’s fit will cause all kinds of problems for the opposition with Wellbeck, and Sanchez. Falcao with Mandissunited will have problems with two Maraddonas already there, VP, Rooney.Have faith ! Up the Gooners

  32. Welback is not an upgrade on Giroud he is just an upgrade on Sanogo. Giroud and Welback are the same quality of stiker, a goal every 3 games or so. The only upside is that Danny is young, which means he can be better than Giroud but we needed better than Giroud now not later.

    1. Well to be fair Welbeck has constantly been played out of position. He is very different to Giroud, definitely less powerful but more mobile so we’ll see.

  33. Are we not getting a defender? We sold Sagna, Djourou, Miquel, Vermaelen.

We bought Chambers and Debuchy? Why sell if we are not going to buy?

  34. Looks like we won’t be signing a much needed centre back or DM… Not enough to win the title at all. This window could have been a lot worse but then again, could have been a million times better.

  35. He is also primarily a CF but plays pretty well on the wings. He counts as a home grown talent leaving 2 spaces for the future (hopefully very short term future…like next 30 minutes…)

  36. welbeck is actually not a bad player, i fact i think he’s sorta like the adebayor kind of player(not personality) that we’re missing.

he does have a bit of pace, body strength and the kind of work rated needed for an arsenal forward to keep dropping back and bomb forward.

Of course he’s no savior, but if we do get him, it’s not as bad as many think.

still, no CB and letting miguel go might VERY much cost us. Even more so than not having a DM.

  37. Should just bring Akpom to the first team! He better than Sanogo. anyway hope Welbeck does well for us.

  38. For once be patriotic and let’s support a fellow English Player. When the England Team disappoints us we complain, when they join our teams we complain. I honestly believe that Welbeck is a good player. He’s young and very capable of performing in the world stage. Give him time and support.

  39. Just to put up a logical question in here. How many of you Fans would have Choosed Welbeck on their wish list?

I have nothing against this guy, but in the moment he is ordinary and not special. Is he an improvement to what we have? Yes. Is he an improvement to compete against the others? No, he isn’t?

And mind my words. If Giroud comes back from his injure, Wenger will force Wellbeck to play as Lw.

    1. I had Welbeck as an upgrade to Giroud. I see everyone is split on the guy. We’ll just have to see.

Absolutely agree with you that Wenger could put Welbeck in a less effective role. Wenger has this habit. If Welbeck starts at CF for the next three months, I don’t think he will relinquish the position. Giroud, who cost us 10m, will become the backup.

      1. How can a player that has never scored 15 goals a season in all his life can be an upgrade on GIROUD who scores 16 PL goals a season?

        Deluded..

  40. Rabiot to Roma off but will stay at PSG a few months (until the winter window?) according to reports in France.

  41. Welbeck’s deal in principle must be pending on whether sign Falcao. If Falcao falls through for man utd I doubt Welbeck deal will happen.

    1. lol at this rate I think your comment might get hidden with the thumbs down, should’ve done Welbeck for thumbs up 😀

  42. D*amn you to h*ll Wenger, How can you leave us so exposed in the back? Per is even slower this year, we have no subs!! We have no quality DM, i mean forget the DM iguess we have mediocre/bad players to cover that but how about Central Defense????

Who is going to cover the D??? Bould???? What the F*ck is wrong with you???? How can you be so F*cking stupid, WHy so much hubris, so much unnecessary pride, Why dont you f*cking ever learn from your own f*cking past mistakes?????

    Go to h*ll.

  43. Maurinho marches on, Wenger staggers behind. You bet the fans have got reason to be disappointed, nothing changes, last minute reduced rate specials. Yes! of course we`ll give Welbeck a chance, what option do we have?

  44. I’m hoping Wenger comes off the plane from Rome, goes home and says to his Wife, honey I am home look who I have brought with me .. !!

A DM and CB from Italy … can only dream

  45. What happened to “I will replace Vermaelen”? :/ When he’s this confident, you’d think he already had someone up his sleeves.

  46. After the fa cup win and with the new puma deal I really thought we would push on and win the league,it’s just a shame we have a stubborn tight fisted old fool as a manger instead of an ambitious manager

    1. NOOOOOOOOOO he is a liability and was THE reason they went out of Champions League last season
I will say again NOOOOOOOOOOO please no

  47. No DM and no CB our season will be 4th place at best and if we lose the next home game I for one will stay behind a call for Wenger and the board to resign

  48. I am disappointed that we did not get someone like cavani but I am still glad to get Welbeck. He is young, fast and has a good touch. He has been played out wide when he wants to be a forward. How many people would have been happy to buy Sturridge a couple of seasons ago. I think he could become just as good at Arsenal. This is also good news for the national team as it is another England squad member that will get more game time in a forward position. If it happens we should all get right behind Welbeck. I think he is a lot better than he is given credit for.

  49. Wenger is a cunnnnnnnt. He should have gone for CB, CDM and ST after we qualified for UCL
group stage but he delays and screws us.

  50. Welbeck is nonsense! Arsene is a hypocrite! Kos took a knock, Ozil did too and….

Suprise suprise… welbeck has a slighty injury….where’s kim kallstrom when you need him

    F*#K!!!

  51. Who do we have as a backup to our backup LB? We are really thin in the defense. Can one of our many CAMs play LB?

  52. just had a look at ambrose could be wanyama number 2 if we play our cards right 6″3 he could be a barnstormer at d/m could be a wenger hidden gem maybe

  53. Guys I’m announcing our new striker! It’s Olivier Giroud, he’ll come in during the winter transfer window. In the mean time, we’ll send him on loan to the hospital.

On a more serious note, is it possible that deals have gone through but not announced? Welbeck hasn’t been announced yet so I’m hoping we sorted a defender out but he’s just not prolific enough to be reported.

    1. Oh we have applied for an extension that’s been accepted. We still a few more hours for the Welbeck deal. Please work on a defender too.

    1. Come on at 23 he is a great buy all these other strikers are 28 and over they had to start to prove them selves Remember Henry was 23 and look how he turned out I am delighted he went for a Pommy can’t wait for him to give Giroud a run for his money CB

      1. I think you hit the nail on the head “look how he turned out” Danny is a good buy, but instead of gently allowing him to adapt he has to hit the ground running, It’s just not the thing a top club should have to do. Danny’s confidence at Man U must have been shot a bit so to ask him at 23 to lead the attack for several months is a big ask.

    2. Sick and tired of this shot from Wenger, Ivan and the board. Boasted of finances to bring in quality and waited until the last minute to buy Danny Welbeck!!!! All due respect to Danny Welbeck, but is this the transfer we were to wait and trust Arsene Wenger with? WHERE’S THE STATEMENT OF INTENT???? How have other teams been able to secure world class players? TICKET PRICES SHOULD BE CUT FOR ARSENAL GAMES. Why should we pay so much to watch 2nd rate players like Carzola, Flamini, Monreal, Arteta, Chambers, Diaby, Sanogo, Campbell, Welbeck, etc.? Arsenal is to profit oriented winning anything by strengthening the team is not a means. They’ll leave it chance like hoping the stiff competition knock each other our and hence luck of facing a team like Hull City in a final.

      1. I hear where you are coming from, but would like to disagree about young Joel Campbell. He is still young, has not be particularly well coached or supported by Arsenal, but he still manages to shine on the ball. He shouldn’t be a starter just yet, but he should be a natural sub like the Ox.

    1. Wow, so technically we bought mu’s fourth choice striker. I’m very excited abt this.. and they said that we are going to challenge for epl trophy. Once again, wow.

      1. He had Rooney 28 Rvp 30 to contend with and Welbeck 23 he ain’t gonna get in front of them but with Arsenal playing regular look out and see if Wenger is right I am very pleased with the buy CB
