Alan Shearer still believes Arsenal could reach the Champions League final at the end of this season, but once again, he expects the Gunners to struggle to win the competition, naming the club he thinks will beat them in the final.

Since returning to the Champions League four seasons ago, Arsenal have made steady progress, reaching the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final in each of the last three campaigns.

By following that trend, their next step would be to win the competition, and this is a step their fans hope and believe their team can take in this campaign.

Arsenal are arguably a stronger team than they were last season, but the campaign has only just begun, and it will be interesting to see how they evolve and deal with issues such as injuries.

Arsenal targeting Champions League glory

For now, the men at the Emirates remain one of the teams to beat in all competitions, and they will be pushing to end this term with their first-ever Champions League trophy.

The current players want to enter the history books, so winning the competition is clearly something they will be determined to achieve. However, Shearer believes there is a club that will beat them to the title at the end of this season.

Arsenal’s progress in recent Champions League campaigns gives them reason to believe they can go further again, but there will be significant challenges along the way. The Gunners will hope their stronger squad can help them overcome those obstacles.

Shearer predicts Arsenal defeat

The former striker believes Arsenal can reach the final, but he does not expect them to go all the way. As quoted by Metro Sport, he said:

‘Clearly it all depends on how the draw goes but I’m going to go Barcelona to win it, beating Arsenal in the final.”

Shearer’s prediction will be unwelcome news for Arsenal supporters, who will hope their team can finally take the final step and lift the Champions League trophy.

The Gunners will have the opportunity to prove the prediction wrong as they attempt to turn their recent progress into European success. For now, however, Shearer expects Barcelona to stand between Arsenal and the biggest prize in European club football.

  1. Champions League is one thing that’s hard to predict. There’s plenty of luck and unpredictability involved. It’s not always the best team or the most consistent team that wins. Even timing of the fixtures relative to league games matters. These are things you can’t control.

    1. Spot on Onyango. Just some of the reasons I’ve never been a fan of the idea that the best club in Europe is automatically determined to be the winner of the UCL tournament.

  2. Last season Arsenal were literally as close as you can get without actually winning it. This season Calafiori/Havertz/Timber are fit again, Odeagaard seems back to his best, and both Konsa and Guimaraes look like fantastic signings. Of course it’s a long season and all that, but right now on paper Arsenal look as likely as anybody to win the Champion’s League.
