Alfie’s World Cup podcast on Torreira’s performance today against Russia

So now we have Day 12 in the World Cup and we have Alfie’s excellent World Cup podcast. I am really enjoying our partnership with this young man who is an out and out Arsenal fan.

From all accounts Lucas Torreira is definitely going to be an Arsenal player after the tournament and it is interesting to hear his views on what he thinks of our new signing…

Please support our young Alfie and give your comments on his opinions below…

  1. Alfie, thanks for the update from your perspective.
There are some niggling reports from the media saying that this is not a done deal however.
His style of ‘just being in the right place at the right time’ reminds me of Gilberto.
The comment about a weak group could be said about England’s group as well.
The knockout stages will be really interesting.
I haven’t personally seen one stand out side, so I hope Tony Adams statement doesn’t come back to haunt him!

    1. Assuming you are talking about Lucas Torreira I hope it is a done deal as he played well and got the fan’s vote as top player according to the BBC’s ‘Player Rater’. Looks to be just what we need.
I’ve rated Belgium as the best so far but have also been more impressed by England than I thought I would be. However Thursday’s game is not going to tell us anything as both managers will probably give their subs a game. . . Martinez has already said he wouldn’t mind changing his entire 10 outfield players. As you say no one else has really stood out and it will be interesting to see how, or if, certain teams can recover and give their supporters some hope – Germany and Argentina in particular come to mind.

      1. Yes I was referring to Lucas and agree he looks like the kind of player we need.

My problem with both Germany and Argentina is that they both seem to get better as the competition progresses.
Regarding the Belgium game, I think it depends who the likely countries we would face by finishing either winners or runners up.
Would also be nice to see We!beck given a starting place, otherwise we might have another Walcott scenario.

        1. Not sure either manager is too bothered who we face in the next round. Japan, Senegal and Colombia have been nothing special so far so maybe it’s a good idea to play such players as Welbeck and rest their best players for the knockout game.

      2. GoonerJack, I have posted a detailed reply to your question about why I don’t watch WC matches on that previous thread, should you wish to read it.

  2. Just read that Torreira’a agent has said that he’s not only signed for Arsenal but will also get the No. 6 shirt – which may not go down too well with Kos who currently holds that number. However it was only the Daily Star so I wouldn’t be putting my life savings on that info being true:)

    1. Six (6) in this case isn’t a shirt number but a position. THe defensive midfield position is referred to as (6) just as you have 9 for strikers

      1. This is precisely my view point too. I see no reason at all to have numbers over eleven. Players names on the back by all means but numbers over eleven are just a vanity matter for players to pose in , IMO. ELEVEN PLAYERS PLAY AT ANY ONE TIME IN EVERY TEAM. Extra numbers are just another marketing con to make more money to go to obscenely already rich players and worse still , their own parasite agents. Think about it please!

    2. not his agent, you totally got the story wrong plus the content mate..

Branislav Jasurek, the agent of Celta Vigo star Stanislav Lobotka – who was also linked with a move to north London – let slip the news in an interview with La Voz de Galicia.
Explaining why his client won’t be signing for the Gunners, he said: “Arsenal have bought Torreira to play six, so I do not think it’s going to happen.
“We only had a few words about feelings about the club, about what we think about Stanko’s future, but nothing in particular.”

    3. He meant, he will be playing the number 6 role, not specifically the number 6 he will be wearing.

    4. I find the whole matter of any shirt numbers above 11 puzzling. Why do players need their own number? Shouldn’t the number reflect the position on the field as it did til relatively recent times? Bendtner had 52 on his back. I can only assume that referred to the number of chances he needed before scoring a goal! Only 11 players are ever on the team actually playing so all we need is 11 numbers IMO. I doubt even a few will agree with me though.

    5. His manager didn’t say that, it was jankto or something’s manager, the guy plays for Lazio and the same position as torriera, and apparently arsenal are linked to him, he said that when the press asked him about our interest..

  3. I only saw a bit of him today, but very impressed, mainly with his positional sense, specifically in regards to the distances between himself, and the two CB’s. To say we need Torreira is a massive understatement! He WILL be the most important signing this summer should we pull it off.

Wenger’s neglect for the defensive side of the game, especially the DM position, has been an absolute disgrace! So much so, that Emery has inherited ZERO DM’s! We do not have a single defensive midfielder in the squad!

      1. We wont know for certain until we will see him given a welcome to Arsenal on the Arsenal website. An obvious fact, that with all the speculation we tend to forget.

    1. Doesn’t that mean that we actually need 2 DMs and not just one. Like Cazorla, what becomes our season if Toreira has an injury?

    2. Nor have we had a defensive midfielder of real quality since Gilberto, a decade ago. And stil SOME cannot work out why Wenger was so slated by so many. Amazing!

  4. He was certainly the best player out there. Very quick and tenacious in the tackle with great positional awareness. I really hope we sign him.
I think Uruguay and Mexico will do well in this tournament.

  5. I hope He gets more game time. That was His first start in Russia, and what a way to put yourself in contention for the starting spot.
    Welcome to Arsenal Torreira
    Arsenal needs you!
