Ally McCoist believes Arsenal had a fine transfer window, even though they sold more attackers than they signed and would have liked to bring in more players.
The Gunners focused on moving some of the deadwood in their squad and avoided splashing the cash on inferior players. Instead, they chose to wait for the best options rather than simply signing anyone available.
McCoist backs Arsenal’s approach
This is expected to be another successful season for Arsenal, with the Gunners keen to defend their league title. Most people expect them to do so, although many supporters were unhappy when the transfer window closed.
Some Arsenal fans felt the team should have added more players, particularly in attack. However, the Gunners believe they made the right decision by refusing to sign players simply for the sake of it.
McCoist does not see why fans should be overly worried, pointing towards the quality available throughout the squad and the number of players capable of filling different positions. He believes Arsenal have enough options to compete.
McCoist said via The Sun:
“I’m okay with Arsenal’s window.
“I can understand a bit of frustration from one or two of the Arsenal fans, not getting cover for Trossard or Martinelli.
“But they’ve got Tzolis who can play out there now, [Eberechi] Eze who can play in that position…Saka on the right.
“Havertz, Gyokeres, [Mikel] Merino through the middle.
Arsenal still have squad depth
“Off the bench they’ve got Eze, Guimaraes, Konsa, [Martin] Zubimendi, Hincapie, [Noni] Madueke.
“I can understand questions being asked, but they still have, in my opinion, the strongest assembled squad I think I’ve ever seen in English football.”
McCoist’s assessment reflects the belief that Arsenal did not need to add players simply to satisfy supporters. The Gunners preferred to protect the quality of their squad rather than compromise their plans.
Although the lack of additional attackers disappointed some fans, Arsenal remain confident in their existing options. McCoist clearly shares that view and believes the Gunners possess exceptional squad depth.

That was why they were blunt and clueless when they faced Villa, thanks to Saka’s lucky goal that saved their blushes. What is the essence of strong midfield and defence when your attackers that should convert chances were mediocre. How many chances did Harvertz throw away on Monday? Yet Gyokeres was not brought on to replace Harvertz despite the fact that he was evidently a passenger on the field..
I think the world of Arsene Wenger, but following the move to the Emirates, even though funds were obviously tight, he still paid out £Millions on some absolute dud’s, which over time, at least in P L and C L Terms sent Arsenal fundamentally backwards from what He and Arsenal had achieved between 1998 and 2007.
M A, with more Funding from Silent Stan, has now got Arsenal back to the top again.
What’s the point of signing players, and spending £Millions to do it, just for the sake of it, if they, ( like some of the aforementioned Arsene Wenger ‘dud’ signings, ) aren’t good enough to add anything, or at least anything significant, to the strength and quality of the squad.
Ally McCoist, by any measure, has to be seen as an ‘objective neutral observer’ and in my view, I think his assessment is essentially correct.
