Arsenal have many rivals for the league title this season, and one of them is Chelsea, with the Blues now being coached by Xabi Alonso.
The former midfielder did well at Bayer Leverkusen and won his first Chelsea game against Fulham, so much is expected from his team this term.
Alonso knows the Premier League very well, having spent some time in the competition as a player, but this is his first experience of managing in England.
Arsenal are the most stable team, but they will compete in Europe, while Chelsea have no European commitments. The Blues have also strengthened their squad with some really good players.
Chelsea Aim to Challenge Arsenal
Alonso will be looking to prove that he can make it happen in England, and it will be interesting to see whether Chelsea can become Arsenal’s main challengers for the league title.
Many people expect a great deal from them this season, and Ally McCoist said via Talk Sport:
“I think they could beat Arsenal on a one-off. I’m not sure they have the consistency to take them over the 38 games. I think they’ve got real quality in forward areas. It was a beautiful finish.”
Chelsea’s lack of European commitments could give them an advantage over Arsenal during the campaign, particularly as the Gunners will have to manage their squad across several competitions.
Chelsea Face Major Title Test
However, consistency will be crucial if Alonso’s team are to challenge Arsenal across an entire Premier League season. Having quality players is important, but maintaining strong performances over 38 games will determine whether they can genuinely compete for the title.
One match does not decide the season, and Chelsea still have plenty to prove. Their victory over Fulham has given them a positive start, but the real test will come as the campaign progresses and they face stronger opposition.
As the season continues, we will discover whether this Chelsea team is capable of beating Arsenal in an individual game or challenging them for the Premier League title. Alonso has already shown his quality as a manager elsewhere, but his ability to build a consistent team in England will now be closely watched.

Sorry to say but I don’t believe Arsenal will be champions this season. Presumption will trip them up.
It won’t be City either who will finish no higher than 4th.
There are too many challengers to say who wins but it means Arsenal will be battling them all.
Then you also have to take into account Arsenal average a low points yield year on year when the winning average over 10 years is over 91. Arsenal have never gone above 89 in that time frame.
And lastly the refereeing will no longer allow Taikwando tactics in the opposition box. That’s another 9 points off minimum.
The final league positions are going to embarrass more than a few for sure.
Gee, Chelsea is a threat with no European commitments, their usual assortment of talented individual players and someone who will have time and perhaps ability (if ownership allows) to bring them together as a team.
