Another former Gunner jumps on the bandwagon slamming Unai Emery

Players have lost confidence in Unai Emery believes former Arsenal midfielder Perry Groves.

It seems that a day does not pass without a former Arsenal player having a go at Unai Emery, the board or even the players. For a fee of course.

This time it is Perry Groves slamming Unai Emery and to be honest, most of what he had to say has been said many times before.

But what strikes me about Groves is that he does not actually offer up any solutions. All he offers is non stop criticism.

It is so easy to pick apart a team when it is not doing so well and former Gunners are experts at that. But other than “sack the manager”, “employ this man” what do they actually propose?

Anyway, this is what Groves said to TalkSport.

“I think, when he first went in there, there was an intensity because it was too comfortable under Arsene Wenger and he made his stance [clear].

“The closing down was a lot more intense – covering more ground.

“He went 22 games unbeaten over a little period and in the game against Spurs they went 2-1 down and came back. There was a real buzz about the Emirates.

“And what has happened is he’s got rid of the players he didn’t want, like the Monreals, the Petr Cechs, and Aaron Ramseys but then the players that have been brought in, whether it’s by him or the sporting director, they have actually got steadily worse.

“That intensity has got less and less and less with a team that he is supposed to be constructing.

“The thing from watching from the outside is there doesn’t seem to be a desire to do the horrible stuff.”

Groves continued: “The thing with the Arsenal situation with Unai Emery is, if you watch them against Leicester, and I’ve been watching Arsenal a lot this year, there is no structure. There doesn’t seem to be any philosophy.

“Unai Emery doesn’t seem to know his best formation, he doesn’t seem to know what players to play in that formation and I think the players have lost confidence in him. I don’t think the players are getting him at the minute.”

So, in conclusion, this is what we have, Emery is useless, the players going backwards, there is no identity and Groves get paid.

I know, I am being a little petty here, I mean, blogs like this, other sites also get paid but at least we offer up some solutions, some opinions on how to steady the ship and so on. In fact, every now and then we go positive.

One final thing, Groves offers zero evidence that the players have lost confidence in Emery. He uses the word “think”. So at the end of the day, he knows no more than me or you.

  1. Complaining without trying to find a solution will not solve any problem

Ornstein has stated Emery has a three year contract without any break clause, so the ball is in Arsenal’s court

    1. Absolutely @innit
      Far better than
      George Armstrong
      David Rocastle
      Brian Marwood
      Anders Limpar
      Robert Pires ……………
      WTF are you on PAL?
      First the Mick McCarthy comment.
      Now this?
Perry Groves was a trier. He worked his socks off every game and tried his best. Talent wise he had nothing. How on Earth you can say he is one of Arsenal’s greatest wingers is just beyond belief. Perry loves Arsenal of that there is no doubt but FFS PAAL.Get a grip on what you write.
To me he is a Jon Fox player.Runs around a lot and worked his nuts off every game he played. Didn’t matter he was an average squad player at best. The old JF dosent worry about skill as long as they run around like a headless chicken 🍗. Seems you have caught yourself a dose of whatever JF has got.

      1. Phil, You should be a politician . Perhaps you already are! Putting lies into other peoples mouths is what lowlife politicians do. Beneath you I would have thought. But obviously I was wrong! And I’lltell you for free “what JF has got”; REALISM! I don’t worship lazy mentally frail has beens who once , some years ago was world clas but is now washed up.

      2. I can only believe that Innit wasn’t around when the players you mentioned were wearing the shirt Phil.

You describe Perry 100% correctly and he certainly had the legs Jon so seems to admire and demand of present day players, with footballing brains a secondry consideration.

Innit undoubtedly has a short span of “Arsenal greats”, we can only be thankful that we were able to watch so many real “greats” ourselves.

        1. ANOTHER BENEATH THE BELT COMMENT ABOUT ME AND WHAT I ADMIRE IN PLAYERS. I CHALLENGE YOU TO EVER FIND ANY OF MY POSTS WHICH SAY I DO NOT ADMIRE AND WANT TALENT IN ALL PLAYERS. GO ON KEN, YOU ARE THE “FORENSIC” ONE ON THIS SITE, SO SEE IF YOU CAN FIND A SINGLE POST OF MINE WHICH ACCEPTS LEGS AND RUNNING POWER BUT NO SKILL. YOU WON’T AND I WILL TELL YOU WHY YOU WON’T. BECAUSE WHAT YOU AND PHIL BOTH SAID ARE BLATANT LIES AND YOU BOTH SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES.

Maybe I should put lies into YOUR mouth and see if YOU like it!

          1. jon, don’t know about Phil, but I can clearly remember you stating that if a player doesn’t run run around for 90 minutes, but rather reads the game and finds the spaces required to set up attacks, he is a weak. mentally frail player who isn’t giving 100%.

If you are now saying that isn’t your view, then I am really happy for you, because only a footballer who can read the game with his brains would be able to do that and Perry Groves wasn’t one of those – but he did run around non stop, which you did admire.

Anyway I didn’t say you didn’t want talent in players did I Jon?
What I said was it was secondary to running around, so I fail to see what your problem is with my post, as that was always your criticism of certain of our players wasn’t it?

        2. In reply to your later post below this, I am getting cross now as you keep on misrepresenting- I can only think deliberately – some of what I write on here. I have NEVER EVER said that players whose skill level is not Arsenal quality should be here. THAT IS NONSENSE AND YOU KNOW IT KEN! What I have many times said is that all players need 100% commitment all the time and also need talent. TO STATE THAT I ONLY WANT PLAYERS WHO RUNAROUND A LOT IS A FLAT LIE AND I DEEPLY RESENT IT. IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO THIS IN FUTURE KEN, WE HAVE NO FUTURE IN DISCUSSING ON HERE. It is up to you. Desist and I will carry on pleasantly. FYI, I never rated Groves at all, even though he give his limited all. I ALSO NEVER SAID THAT TALENT WAS SECONDARY TO SKILL. BOTH ARE VITAL AT ARSENAL AND ALL TOP CLUBS. OBVIOUSLY!!!! My antipathy to all lazy players, is no reason to think that I do not appreciate and applaud sublime skill as much as any other fan. One without the other is useless and will always be so at our required level. Please never misrepresent my views again!!!

          1. Right Jon, do you think that players who can read the game and create space for themselves by thinking about the game are lacking commitment?

Do you think that players like that should have to be seen running around defending, attacking, providing, in order to be seen giving that 100% commitment?

Do you think that players with this ability could have made such a success of their careers, if they are lazy?

If your answers to the above questions are NO, then I have misread your posts ( not deliberately I must add).

As for Perry, his uncle or was it dad (?) Vic was a much better player and you must agree that Innit, who started this off, must have been a twinkle in his fathers eye if he rates him so highly versus those players Phil mentioned?

          2. So Jon-I would be very interested to hear your views on George Graham as a player. He covered as much ground during a game as the half-time tea lady. What did you do to deride and insult him in 1970-71 when the team won the double? I take it you were there in those days? It’s just that you seem very confused with most things you write. So GG ? No player covered LESS ground than him. He tackled like a Four Year old girl. Or is it only recent times you feel you know more than anyone else and so have the Devine right to critisise and not expect to be questioned? And of course very conveniently hide behind other threads and posts to not reply.
But don’t worry.I will remind you of this one until you do answer.

  2. Got Vic Groves Autograph several times at his car service station in Blackstock Rd. Never refused you Vic. Phil and Ken, stop winding Jon up although it is funny. You can tell when he bites, the old capital letters start coming out
