Arsenal being linked with a defender at last

Due to our awful injury worries with our defenders this season (plus our goals-against tally), many Arsenal fans were begging Unai Emery to buy a centre-back in January. But the boss in fact made it clear that he had too many already! He said: “We have enough players who can play centre back in the squad. The problem is we’re having a lot of injuries in this position. We have enough players. If we can bring another player, and all the other players we have are well to play, then we could maybe have a problem in the future.”

Perhaps the summer will be different as we may have some retirees and maybe a few sales from our back line, so now we have our first Arsenal defender rumour of the year. The Mirror reports…

Arsenal are ready to rival Liverpool in the race for Borussia Moenchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter.

The Germany international — well known to Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp from their days at Borussia Dortmund — has impressed since joining Gladbach in 2017.

And his form has prompted keen interest from the Gunners as well, with Unai Emery considering a move for him in the summer as he bolsters his options at the back.

Apparently the German is valued at around £35million by Gladback, which is about what we paid for Mustafi. I don’t suppose they would consider a swap would they?

One interesting fact about Ginter is that although he has made 23 appearances for Germany he has the doubtful record of being the only outfield player in German football history who participated in two World Cup campaigns without playing a single minute!

Would he be a good target for the Gunners?

  1. He was on our radar a few years ago…but to be fair arsenal always get connected to top talent.

Whatever happens, top 4 and or a Europa Cup is a must. This will determine what we can spend and who we can get.

  2. According to credible reports, some Geraman clubs are heavily interested in Mavropanos and he could be set for a summer move should Unai Emery sanction it.

        1. We probably should sell him if he isn’t in our plans and if we plan to make some smart buys at CB, sticking a buy back fee on him has to be a must though, and we also should set the price for the buy back. Say ten to 15 mil and put a three season time scale on it, after three seasons they can set whatever price they want. I don’t know if that’s something you can do, but we definitely should have a clause on him, and the competitive games will do more for him than sitting on our bench or playing at u23 football. Also, for me loans don’t really work as well as some think, the club they go to won’t be invested into making a star out of them, they’ll want them to perform but they won’t invest extra resources or anything into working with that kid. Also, what the club would really want is for one of their own to come up and usurp that kids place in the team.

          1. Lacazette eligible to play against Rennes on Thursday after Arsenal’s appeal against red card was partially upheld by UEFA which reduced his suspension to two matches. Great news.

  3. our defence has only been poor away from home, we have the 3rd defence at home but a horrible 14th defence away.

  4. Did you see the gesture Ozil made to the Nairobi kids, sending signed shirts after seeing one of them with a hand made Ozil shirt, that is class I must say.

  5. Ginter and Schar are not the kind of defenders we need.
They are hardly better than Sokratis or Holding.. we need one top class CB
