Arsenal braced for nightmare Champions League draw as European giants await in pot 1

Arsenal are poised for a nightmare scenario in the UEFA Champions League draw.

The draw for the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League league phase is just around the corner, marking the beginning of another gruelling European campaign for the Gunners. Arsenal finished third in last season’s league phase after winning six of eight games. They went on to have a strong knockout campaign, dispatching PSV and Real Madrid before succumbing to eventual winners PSG in the semi-final.

After strengthening significantly in the transfer window, Arsenal will head into the UCL with belief, potentially reprising their role as contenders once again. Before that, the Gunners will have to overcome the league phase, and given how things have panned out, they could be in line for a difficult draw.

Tough opponents from pot 1

Arsenal, who are in pot 2, are guaranteed to draw two of the following opponents from pot 1: Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona. The English trio of Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea are also in pot 1, but UEFA rules prohibit clubs from the same league playing against each other at this stage.

The four pots are determined by UEFA club coefficient. The Gunners will feature alongside Bayer Leverkusen, Atletico Madrid, Atalanta, Villarreal, Juventus and Eintracht Frankfurt in pot 2. The remaining sides for this pot are yet to be confirmed.

The league phase draw will take place in Monaco on Thursday, 28 August, a day after the conclusion of the qualifying rounds. The league phase will commence in the middle of September.

Arsenal’s ambitions remain high

Arsenal could be handed a pair of very tough opponents from pot 1. All of last season’s semi-finalists, along with Real Madrid, are among the six clubs they could potentially draw. There are also tricky opponents in pots 2 and 3.

Arsenal will no doubt hope for a favourable draw, but the club find themselves in a fantastic position nonetheless. After addressing key problems in the summer, the Gunners will fear no one, and that could bode well for their UCL aspirations.

  1. No team in Europe is too big and too tough for Arsenal. The teams in pot 1 will be more worried about facing us.

    1. I agree. At least they changed the home and away rule, albeit one tournament too late for us to have played PSG at home in second leg last season.

      1. What a terrible excuse
PSG played last 16 and Q Final 1st leg at home first and were fine
We played real Madrid at home first and were fine
We lost semi final because in every department they were better

        1. Excuse for what? Yeah Dan, why did they changed the rule? I’m not going on one of those no doubt continuous debates with you on this or anything else. I’ve already asked you to not directly reply to my comments and I will continue to not reply directly to yours. Please allow me to enjoy the JA you are so much a part of without interacting with you or vice versa. It’s up to you of course, thanks, I hope, in advance.

    2. Certainly agreeable @Chuauhnuna

We have no reason to be in the Champions League and there’s teams we are scared or worried of.

Why not give all those in Pot 1 and if we get knocked so early, simply says something about our preparedness for this league?

  2. Every Teams Who advanced from quarter to semi finals won it from the First Legs.

We lost PSG First Leg because we Lost Thomas Partey to that needless Yellow Card he obtained at The Banerbeu.

His absence in the Team disrupted the winning rhythm we carried to benabeu.

    1. I think we’d have lost to PSG with or without Partey. They were the best team in the Champions League without doubt and worthy winners.

  3. If Arsenal aspires to be a top club in Europe as well as in the EPL then they’ll have to take what comes – what alternative is there?

In my opinion, there’s little point using last year’s matches as any indicator now because not only Arsenal but most of the other leading clubs they could face at some stage will have strengthened/changed their teams as well. What happened in the CL in 2024-25 isn’t necessarily a pointer – one way or another – to 2025-26.

  4. I don’t go along with this nightmare draws rubbish. If we want to win the Champions League, we’ve got to play some big boys along the way. And while it’s better later in the tournament, you play who you play full stop.

Whoever said it was going to be easy, anyway.

  5. I prefer to play at home first then go away after a good win and park the bus if necessary 😊. As for nightmare draws, we gotta play them sometime! Bring it on.
