Arsenal claimed to be ‘confident’ in bid to beat PSG to experienced midielder

Paris Saint-Germain are said to be closing on a deal to sign Idrissa Gueye from Everton before the close of the current transfer window, but reports are coming in to claim that we are ‘confident’ of stealing a march on our rivals.

The Senegal international has been a consistent performer on the Merseyside since joining the club from Aston Villa in 2016, and could be set for a big-money move.

The Gunners have said all month that we have no money to make any permanent signings, which gives you serious doubts where any supposed links are made, but the report claims that we will agree to pay the asking price of £40 Million in installments, the first of which will be paid in the summer.

Gueye missed Tuesday’s 1-0 win at Huddersfield but Everton boss Marco Silva insisted that was due to injury.

“He had a minor problem with his groin,” Silva said.

“We tried to be honest with all of you and with our fans. After the match I tried to find out if something new has happened because I expected your question and there’s nothing new.

“He has a minor problem with his groin. No new offers and hopefully he can continue with us.

“I don’t know about a new offer or not. Nobody has told me. We were in the hotel last night preparing for the game, fully focused on the match.

“I know the market is open until January 31, it’s always tough for us, but about the new offer, £30million, nothing came true.

“I asked 10 minutes ago if there was something new, but there is not.”

As much as I could understand us beating PSG to Gueye’s signature considering the likelihood of regular football at either club, but the wages we would be willing to offer would surely not match up if Emery’s former side were seriously interested.

Regardless of the above, and the supposed payment ‘in installments’, I’m struggling to believe that there is much proof behind the links, although I do think he would be a good addition to our midfield.

Would Gueye be a regular in our starting XI? Would he snub PSG to join us?

  1. From reliable sources, Idrissa Gueye to Arsenal is not true. Its just media talk.Nkunku still remains Arsenal’s target now though several sources are saying it’s off and some still on.
PSG are expected to sign Lille midfielder Thiago Mendes which means we might still have a chance though unlikely he’ll sign.Reports also stating the fee is the problem in this is not true.

For the summer, Arsenal targets involve a RB(Dumfries and others likely from Holland),LB(currently scouting),CB,RW(Nicolas Pepe,No. 1 target)
The obvious ones who fans are expecting to leave will also be leaving. For the last time Nketiah loan move to Augsburg has been cancelled.

    1. Lastly, Arsenal have money and this will be proven in the summer transfer window.Perisic and Suarez alone could’ve cost Arsenal about £55m.

      1. Kev-for once I agree with you.Arsenal will have money this summer and I believe we will buy big.We still need to somehow get CL football next season be it through a Top4 finish or by winning the EL.
And I also believe Denis Suarez will be a good signing* for us.

        1. Denis played well when he actually started matches. He’s wasted away at Barca bench for the past 2 seasons.

I hope he can regain his Villarreal/Sevilla form. If not, well its just a loan.

I really hope we get Pepe! We already missed Hazard from Lille, it cannot happen again.

        2. Yes, CL football is a must for us.In truth, not making the CL has hurt us financially.
Dennis Suarez is good just that he lacks decisiveness.Whether he can he take it to the next level is the question not really about how good he is.But imo Barcelona’s style of play does not suit him at all. He’s like a free role kind of player. If you ask him to be too static and stick just to his position he’ll be ineffective.

    2. I believe you @kev. Gueye rumor is too silly to be true, since Arsenal have got Torreira, Guendouzi, Maitland-Niles, Xhaka, Elneny and Chambers

I hope they would not chase Pepe. Because based on his YouTube videos that show him play against PSG and Lyon, he is more of a goalscorer than a skillful dribbler

I’d prefer a winger in the mold of Hazard that can produce a lot of successful dribbles, assists and goals

      1. Yes, we need a winger with the character of players like Gervinho or Oxlade Chamberlain.A winger who will look to always take on his man and create chances very well.

        1. i agree 2, leon bailey!!

Ps: my replacement for Welz woulb be Yussuf Poulsen, to give this team something different height and power, and his stats makes him a solid investment at 24 193, good with the ball at his feet, great in the air, great work-rate, scores from the wings, can play in attack or as a winger, good link-up play…with rowe moving there i beleive RB is the perfect team to buy and loan players with, i hope we create some sort of relationship that gives us wings!!

  2. What are they really smoking in Arsenal’s boardroom…We need a winger and a defender and you get 2 midfielders…its shocking

    1. Sammygunner, could you please advise us of any defenders of the quality Arsenal requires, who were available in this transfer window for sale, let alone for loan?

  3. Read that PSG are trying to bring someone in for about 8m and then we could get Nkunku, sounded genuine enough.

  4. Arsenal transfer windows are always depressing and they seem to always leave it to transfer deadline Day to get deals done when most in need of players! We certainly won’t be getting Gueye that’s definitely not happening! It’ll be that Nkunku if anything! Jesus Christ another youngster! This club has zero ambition.

    1. Saw his YouTube highlights. He seems to be fearless like Guendouzi and Fabregas in his first EPL season

Getting another daredevil could improve Arsenal’s dull attacks, but I’d prefer a specialist RW than having another jack of all trades

      1. I think Arsenal have enough youngsters with promise.. Nkunku isn’t gonna bring anything that we probably don’t already have! But it’s unlikely we’re signing him or anyone anyway! Would rather just keep Smith-Rowe

        1. John, with all due respect there wasn’t a lot of business done by any club in this transfer window, let alone a club only able to fund loans!
Let’s hope we see Arsenal transact more transfer business, both in and out, before next season.

    2. I share in your view.I don’t know what he brings to Arsenal that we don’t have.I’m very disappointed in how youngsters such as Amaechi and Sake have at least not been given many first team opportunities in the EPL.This team is crying out for a winger and you’d have thought they’d be tried there.Quality is important than experience and every youngster was once inexperienced until they had more chances.Thankfully we didn’t spend money for the sake of it on a CB and I’m happy to wait for the summer rather than signing another CB who’ll just add to our problems.

      1. It was criminal not to sign a winger Kev some would say that on a CB but with no money we were never gonna get anyone on loan in that position. As I said on a previous post a winger would have been a priority as Leicester proved against Liverpool with some width you can cause all sorts of problems but this being Arsenal they love to disappoint.

    3. with you on that, europa league for sure top 4 requires a miracle!! and not by us by other teams losing players like kane and dropping points…i’m personally not excited about the suarez transfer as i barely notice him if/when he was on but i’ll take the loan deal and his tiny frame as we need players!!..this deal for saurez should have been done jan 1st not transfer deadline…rowe going to RB is also worrying we need players on the wings, why have another talent leave on loan, what happens if we get an injury to iwobi?

so it’s auba ,miki, iwobi on the wings with suarez as the new guy, yeah having any of those guys running at you will split defences lol, I hate our wings!! out of the top 10 we have the worst wingers, so thank god for Iwobi this season! and yes i can name a winger i would take from each team all the way down to west ham at 12 th, that say’s it all and we get a player that’s not even a specialist, i’ll take it but so unhappy about how this entire month played out.

do we even think anymore when we purchase players, youri for monaco is a player i would have wanted as a ramsey replacement, they are getting a loan deal can’t We compete with Leicester?

not one rumour about full-backs are you kidding me? i knew we lost momentum two months ago, this is a joke of a transfer and the reason why we won’t make top 4 …..spend in the summer all you/we like but you won’t attract the best with those tied up wages and the europa league!!… and beleive it, it’s europa league with our squad cracks all over with our injuries ( gap in mid with ramsey leaving and ozil not playing, gap at fullback both sides, gaps in the winger position, gap up front we need 3 strikers not two, gap in defence, gap at GK at the end of the year when Peter leaves) all these positions need new blood, and a couple of transfer windows to complete, we just lost 6 months of scouting!!! some teams are buying players for next season and we can barely complete a loan deal, please explain where the money is gone?

so let the cycle continue ever since Dein left, it’s a joke it’s an absolute joke!!…after all the early signings in the summer what happened? back to the old days? why can’t we change? 🙁

      1. They’ll never change with Kroenke as the owner. Stoke city had more money to spend than us it’s an absolute joke.

          1. And 7 million Sue ? crouch is s free transfer still can’t believe he’s still playing almost 40 ?

            1. Jeez!! So he’s back in the Prem!! Ashley Barnes will be showing him all the UFC moves in the morning!! Bit underwhelming ain’t it??!

              1. Damn Alex Scott has left the studio was the only reason I was watching TDD ? maybe Crouch will teach Barnes the robotic dance ? I thought we were getting someone called Kevin Maicuit plays for Napoli a right back now stuck with Lichtsteiner ?

                  1. TDD another let down ? Hayley will keep the bordem ticking over until 11 ? no Sue Kroenke is counting the pennies ? would they ? ? So you confident about Sunday’s game Sue ? ?

                    1. Yeah I reckon they would ? that old fella with the grey hair on Sky drives me mad!!
I’m not sure right now – there have been some crazy results lately.. I didn’t for one minute think that Newcastle would beat City! So there’s hope.. we couldn’t pull it off could we?! If we perform like we did against Chelsea, anything is possible (unless Lichtsteiner is selected to play!!) ?

                    2. Jim white the Scottish fella ? Haha. They aren’t getting Giroud looks to be staying at Chelsea, you’re nephew will be disappointed Sue ? no Sue I can’t see it, not away from home.. I know palace did it but they’re more equipped to play away from home than us.. we just go gung ho and get stuffed ? he probably will play Sue ?

                    3. Yes him!! He didn’t do himself any favours when he mentioned Mesut earlier too!!
My nephew thought they might get Batshuayi… but that’s a no go… I said don’t be greedy you have Arnautovic!!
I’m looking forward to the game (in a weird kind of way ?) I’m off at the weekend.. work 10 days then have 4 off (tomorrow is my 10th day) so they’d better not disappoint! What team would you pick?

                    4. Isn’t he injured now ? haha what did he say ? No he’s off to palace ? hopefully not Sue but don’t they love to disappoint ? Kos if fit, Mustafi will play can’t see him being dropped for mavro and Jenks at RB but I suspect Niles will play.. Torreiras form has dipped which is worrying, I do like him but I think we need a bigger stronger Midfielder in there someone like Doucoure but we have no chance getting him.

                    1. I mean Jim white what did he say about Ozil? Javier is good just doesn’t get the service. Hope West ham beat pool on Monday! Well he’s training already so there is a good chance he will and if he does maybe Lacazette will be benched, I don’t think Emery is too keen on Auba and Laca playing together! We play Bate soon and I think we’re gonna have to give one of them a rest as Europa League is more important to us than top 4 this season! If we get a good draw I believe we can win it beating Chelsea in the final haha

                    2. Oops ?? one of Swansea’s former managers was saying how Suarez is similar to Ozil… so he said half the fans won’t like that ?
Chelsea in the final?! No problem ??

                    3. The Portuguese guy haha. Smith said Suarez isn’t gonna get get fans too excited that’s good news isn’t it ? haha well he could be right Sue… I think our budget will be restricted again in summer with Ozils wages so Ozil fans might have to accept the club won’t go crazy in the transfer window ? yeah leave Giroud in tears ?

                    4. I’m quite happy John… we got someone & I wasn’t even sure we’d do that!
                      Benefit of the doubt, remember?!
Who knows what’ll happen in the summer?? So have you checked Inter’s news?? ?

                    5. Yeah I know I got it wrong brag all you want ? I’ll be happier when we get City out of the way then only left with Totts and utd ? but I will have a serious meltdown if Lingard scores against us again ? maybe Kev on here he’ll know ?

                    6. Haha he can cut a rug all day if he wants but he’s still from emo-chav town can’t dance that away ? well the window is shut so all the rumours can now do one! We’ll be linked with another 50 players in the coming weeks and get none of them in the summer ? Stan is tightening the purse strings ?

  5. Why in the first place have Arsenal missed out on the signing of Almiron who was so cheap at £20m transfer fee to sign as the true replacement for the Arsenal reject, Ramsey in the Arsenal midfield. Almiron had been an Arsenal target since from last summer window. But his transfer to Arsenal did not come to fruition last summer despite the £70m that Arsenal spent on 3 targets last summer. However, I was of the thinking Arsenal will a way this Jan window to silently make his signing to come to fruition by taking a low interest rate loan from the bank or even from Stan Kroenke himself to sign Almiron in advance of the club’s next summer signings but signed this winter window. Then, from the club’s summer transfer kitty, the £20m that is borrowed from the bank or from the club owner, Stan Kroenke standing for one Arsenal target next summer signings will be deducted from the kitty to pay back the bank loan or to Kroenke the £20m plus little interest Arsenal took to sign Almiron. But alas! Newcastle have this winter window snapped him up on a plate of cheap transfer fee of £20m. Could this be one of the frustrating transfer reasons that has left Sven Mislintat, head of Arsenal recruitment frustrated to be leaving the club? Well, If Everton will agree to installmental payments from next summer for their Idrissa Gueye to go on a permanent transfer this winter window and Arsenal truly want to sign him, why not? Let the club go ahead to sign him before the deadline day is closed this night. But will he pass a medical to make the transfer go through as it has been reported he has a groin injury. Arsenal sold Theo Walcott to Everton last term. So, Everton should repay Arsenal the good gesture that they have done to them by allowing Walcott to go them with allowing Gueye to come to Arsenal.

    1. i’m ok with missing on Almiron, as he might flop coming from such a weak league, he looks great on youtube but you never know when it’s the MLS i’m sure i could play there ;)…and if he does well at Newcastle we can easily place a bid give them the 10 mil profit they look for and move on, it’s youri from Monaco who looks like a steal, having watched him when he played for Belgium he’s the perfect ramsey replacement, and we get to test-drive him first with a loan deal, can’t beleive we didn’t try to go for him or Hudson Odoi…those two are ready for moves based on the rumours, Gueye is heading to PSG or staying at everton. don’t see him moving to us, and i would rather have someone abit younger for resale value just in case, we got AMN who would be perfect there in my humble opinion. would love for him to cement himself in the starting 11! as a fullback or a defensive mid 🙂

Ps: we got one over them when we sold them Theo, was happy with the amout we from him as well!

      1. MLS isn’t as poor as it used to be. Many of the top Euro players who’ve come over (even if they’re not at their peak) have found it difficult. Top league? No. Much more quality than it was 20 years ago. Almiron is very good player. I think he’d do alright in the EPL , but at a club like Everton not Arsenal.

    2. he’s of unknown quality though. MLS to EPL is a massive jump and there’s essentially no precedent for MLS players succeeding in EPL. Howard and Dempsey really the only players that come to mind. Denis Suarez on loan is a far safer option than committing to Almiron. Even if we decide to purchase Suarez he costs roughly the same for a far more established player. Good for Newcastle if he turns out to be a hit though.

    3. Samuel, Bless your naive little cotton socks but KROENKE LENDS MONEY ONLY TO HIMSELF USING ASSETS BOUGHT WITH BORROWED MONEY AS COLLATERAL. I f the cunning and morally bankrupt business world was as sweet and well meaning as you are the world would be a far better place . But sadly it is not.

  6. I thought we targeted well enough considering we were looking for loans. Just a pity that they didn’t come off. Perisic would have been a great loan, he’s tall, strong, can defend and being Croatian midfielder means he can play too. He would’ve been trying to earn a contract, that is why it was a smart move, we didn’t have to settle in the summer, but he had it all to play for. A shame it didn’t come off.

Suarez is similar, he has to try and hit the ground running now. Barca nabbed him so we know he’s comfortable on the ball, people are probably hoping that he’ll be Cazorla like ..I’d imagine he plays mostly on the wings though, as Cazorla did at first people might be thinking. Well at least it’s only an option. I believe under these constraints, Emery actually tried to improve us, that is not easy to do in Jan and never mind that we had no money. Yep, just a pity, but you don’t get brownie points for almost. Still, let’s see what Suarez has to give.

    1. BOT I think only me, you and 1 or 2 others wanted Perisic lol I don’t understand why most would rather we got no one than Perisic… I guess some people are still hoping Iwobi delivers. If they think Arsenal are going to smash big money for a Pepe etc this summer are gonna be left very disappointed. I don’t see this Arsenal team qualifying for CL I’m not being negative just realistic.

      1. Then welcome to the realists club. It will grow significantly towards season end, when the dreamers see their dreams come crashing down. You will find John, as I have done so often oever my years in the realist club, that many dreamers prefer to shoot the messenger rather than face the truth.

        1. Jon, you always do speak a lot of sense and I like how honest you are! You’re exactly right, a lot of people would rather delude themselves in thinking that there’s light at the end of the tunnel when we (realists) know that there isn’t any! Stan Kroenke is the devil in disguise and will ruin this great club.. I can’t believe that the majority of fans are still being fooled into thinking next season will be any different! The club has led us fans down the garden path for years and nothing is going to change anytime soon! And as you said Jon dreamer’s… Dreamer’s if anyone is foolish enough to believe Arsenal will go on a lavish spending spree this Summer, bringing in Leon Bailey’s, Pepe’s and Koulibalys of the footballing world! It took the club the whole of January to get Denis Suarez on loan the club is still run by a bunch of clowns, expect more of the same this summer.

  7. It’s a myth that we don’t have money. The latest accounts showed we have over £230 million cash in the bank. Yes some of it is needed for day to day operational costs but the bulk of it could be used for transfers. Problems with the size of our wage bill and, as we are aparantly losing money due to lack of champions league football, means the club won’t spend huge amounts until the new shirt sponsorship kicks in and until we either reduce the wage bill and/or get into the champions league.

    1. We will reduce our wage Bill significantly next summer:

      Cech out 100km
      Ramsey out 110k
      Welbeck out 70kk
      Özil possibly out 300k
      Koscielny/Mustafi possibly out 90k
      Lichsteiner out 90k
      Jenkison possibly out 40-50k

  8. Could someone please tell me who are the current Arsenal scouts in the UK? In the absence of cash to match Man City, Chelsea etc should we not be following the Bournmouth model to buy promising young players from the Championship.Eddie Howe has picked up a gem in young Brooks and a good one in Mepham from Brentford.Madison of Leceister is another example of real talent from out with the PremiershipThere are others such Konsa, Brentford and Clarke at Leeds. Holding is the only acquisition from the Championship on our books and significantly he has been a success unlike the likes of Mustafi, Xhaka and Kolasinac.

    1. we dont have a transfer strategy anymore. We keep jumping from one to the other. I’m with you on scouting lower English leagues more. A lot of the foreign players we buy are overrated and have embarrassing wages. Every big 6 club has established English players in their squad, while Arsenal have zero. Ramsey and Walcott have been our only consistent british players for years.

      1. ?Cant agree more! Arsenal need to scout the lower leagues in the UK extensively. With the multitude of players, how many are uncut gems, who only require intensive physical and technical training to flourish?
One of the interesting stories is that of Ian Wright, who battled in non league football and worked as a house painter before given an opportunity to become a professional at Crystal Palace. We all know how that turned out.

  9. OT: An ex-Gunner who is also a lifelong Gooner has become a Chinese under the new name “Li Ke” today

He gained several caps for England U17 – 19 and plays as a fullback, a position that Arsenal are lacking the personnel currently

    1. Yennaris? No wonder he had a Chinese look about him.I thought he’d be a starter for us at the time he broke through in the 11/12 season since he showed much promise
      .

  10. Hilarius listening to Sky Sports Deadline Day activity. All day they’ve been asking all their guests “what’s the best deal of the day”. With all the deals that have gone down today 90% of them have said Martial signing a new deal at United. “Paid Stooges” is exactly what they are including our very own, former Arsenal and England ladies full back, Alex Scott. Met her in the lift at the Emirates a few weeks ago going up to my seat, jokingly said to her “you look just like our new Princess (Meghan), to which she replied in a humpy voice, “I’m a footballer”, really? Well, she’s obviously following in the footsteps of two other Arsenal players, Smith and Merson in saying exactly what Sky Sports tell them to say in order to keep their jobs. Give me the likes of Tommy Docherty, Roy Keane and Graeme Souness any day of the week, people who speak their minds and not afraid to say how it is.

    1. True Kenny but id rather look at Alex Scott than that moody face of Roy Keane or Souness anyday of the week

  11. Funny how the youngsters are not given a look in..read that that was one of the main factor that got him the job

  12. If PSG were interested in Ozil why did we not try to do a swap for him with Rabiot??

    Torreira Rabiot
    Suárez Ramsey Aubameyang
    Lacazette

  13. Think about the future if we get this lad… Say in 3 years.

    Leno
    Bellerin/Chambers/Holding/Kola
    Torreira/Guendouzi
    Nkunku/Suarez/Nelson
    Lacazette

    Iliev
    Osei-Tutu/Pleguezelo/Mavropanos(Medley)/???
    AMN(Willock?)/Sheaf(Gilmour? Bielik?)
    Amaechi(John-Jules?)/ESR/Saka(Iwobi?)
    Nketiah

Obviously we can’t assume they will all develop well enough but I find this thought promising, with some key signings over those 3 years along with focusing on developing our players then why can’t we challenge for big things?

  14. Kroenke is an ********. One of the most despised men in America. He put a million dollars into Trumps campaign and 2,700 dollars to the Democrats. Anything to lick? In the States his face is put on dartboards and toilet seats. Not an exaggeration.
Why would we want Idrissa Gueye. He is 30 this year. A ‘sideways’ player. Matteo and Lucas are much better. We are not that good but we are way better than Everton and Gueye is not an upgrade.
