Arsenal equals record from their unbeaten 2003/2004 season

Arsenal want to retain the Premier League title this season and have made a very fine start to the campaign, so they could achieve that if they continue performing at this level.

Their latest result was a 2-1 win against Chelsea, one of the teams expected to challenge them for the title. It was an impressive victory because the Gunners were made to fight really hard before securing all three points.

The Gunners have done well over the last few months and have returned for a new season even stronger than they were at the start of the last one.

That is exactly what Arsenal need in a season where Manchester City are working really hard to beat them to the title. Arsenal’s start to the campaign has been so good that it could become one of their best campaigns since their Invincible season.

Arsenal match impressive record

Premier League Production reports that Arsenal’s three consecutive wins and conceding just one goal to start the season match their best start to a season ever. The 2003/2024 season and their start to the 1924-25 campaign are the only other times it has happened.

These are the type of records that Arsenal need as they work hard to ensure that the team remains in fine shape throughout this campaign.

The Gunners have started the season strongly, and maintaining that level will be important if they are to remain ahead of their title rivals.

Gunners need consistency

Arsenal will need to continue producing results if they are to retain the Premier League title. Their victory against Chelsea showed that they can overcome difficult opponents even when they are made to work hard for the win.

The Gunners have already made an excellent start, but there is still a long campaign ahead of them. Manchester City are pushing hard to challenge Arsenal, meaning the Gunners cannot afford to become complacent.

They will need a long winning run or even an unbeaten season to become champions. Arsenal have given themselves a strong platform with their opening results, but they must maintain that consistency throughout the campaign if they are to achieve their objective.

  1. It says in the piece, season 2003/2024. WOW! I bet the players were knackered after that season.

And they complain they play to much. 😂🤣

  2. Deep inside I’m feeling this Arsenal can win the title without losing. The league is at the mercy of Arsenal. Possible!
Like the palms of his hands Arteta currently knows best the balance of power in the league and the effective chemistry of his team.

  3. To prevent the Achilles Heels of Arsenal which are injuries Arteta is now managing well the minutes of players. Havertz sooner than later will be given recuperation period and Gyokeres starts games. Also Eze Madueke Guimaraes etc

  4. This team and squad will attract comparisons with the A W Invincibles and Double winning Teams if they continue to win Major silverware over the next few seasons and beyond.

If Arsenal DO win the Back To Back P L Title this season, for the first time since 1935, who thinks they might be rated as better than the Invincibles, keeping in mind that the Invincibles had a 49 game unbeaten record.

    1. The invincibles would wipe the floor of this current team .
Footballs changed for the worse in the last 20 years ,this team wouldn’t even get in the top 20 teams to feature in the PL since its induction.
      Absolutely no comparison

    1. until a team goes unbeaten in the Prem there can’t be a comparison
      the achievement speaks for itself

  6. I don’t see any team in the league dare I say “invincible” enough to go undefeated including our gunners. We’re looking very sound so far but, even if anything is possible, let’s not get too carried away after 3 wins and beating City130 in the shield.
While there is much to love about our current gunners, I don’t really see a close comparison to the invincibles. Of course I’m probably just biased toward those wonderful glory days.

    1. In order to make comparisons you have to consider the contexts as well as the results. This is very difficult to do objectively or with any kind of balance. It’s far too early to be to be talking about going through the season undefeated in any case.

  7. I don’t feel like any team will have an Invincible season due to the amount of talent in the PL. That being said, we have the squad depth and talent to win this season, depending on how well Arteta manages his players.

  8. Just three games unbeaten and the “invincibles” BS has begun. Even Sky Sports has started on it. Let’s just go for a record points total and crash through the 100 points barrier.

    1. Yeah Jax I was going to mention this about Sky as well, you beat me to it.

Sherwood and Bothroyd were discussing it (but to be fair they were just asked the question).

It’s way too early, and the PL has become so much more competitive.

If we get to the last 10 games of the season and we are unbeaten, then this can become a discussion!

  9. After 10 games there are still 28 left, it’s very difficult almost impossible. We almost did it in 1991 as well, lost one game and conceded only 18 goals.

  10. I would suggest one looks at each position, remembering how the Invincible players dominated every game and we watched them intimidate each set of opponents before the match had even started.
I don’t go along with this idea that clubs are stronger today, we were just streets ahead of everyone else bar manure.

    1. I do, football has developed very much in 20 years. Watch games from the past and compare with today.

What the invincible players did was excellent and is very difficult to copy. They played many draw matches and several clubs have got more points during a season afterwards.

115 managed 100 points in the 2017-18 season, and Liverpool managed 99 points in 2019-20 for example.

      1. So by that sentence that teams are getting more points does that not tell you that the league is easier and not as competitive?

        1. It tells me that Guardiola is the best manager in the world. He has had tremendous success in three different leagues.

The competition is increasing over time and clubs nowadays have much more resources. The multibillion media deals together with new club owners have changed the league significantly.

I will remind you that our achievements in the CL last three years are similar to our best achievements from the past. We have now reached the semifinals two times and the final two times.

All the resources among the EPL clubs are the main reason why most of the best players want to play in the league. No other league can fully compete with the EPL. More or less all clubs have foreign key players, which has increased significantly since 2004.

I have been an Arsenal supporter since 1971. I have been watching English football on regular basis since then.

  11. I’m also of the view that it’s going to be virtually impossible to achieve another unbeaten season, although as pointed out, 2 – 1 loss to Chelsea at the Bridge, Kerry Dixon late goal, late in the season, was all that prevented it in 1991.

The Invincibles went 49 Games unbeaten – Rooney’s dive got them the dodgy penalty in the last 10 minutes and we got caught on the on the break chasing the game.

If that game had ended 0 – 0 which was looking likely at the time, who knows how many more games we could have gone unbeaten that season.

I don’t think back to back titles would match the Invincibles, but it would definitely bring this team into a closer comparison to them.

    1. Nice saying, Chris S

The teams we had late in the 90s in the beginning of 2000 are among the greatest EPL teams ever. When thinking how good we were, I believe we should have won more titles. We had world class players all over the pitch 🫶

  12. “We had world class players all over the pitch” and therein lies the answer to the question Didrik.
Do we currently have world class players all over the pitch?

We should also ask the questions – Have we got a stronger squad now than under the Invincibles and have we a better manager and owners??

      1. There should be four answers DK
        1. WC players all over the pitch ?
        2. A stronger squad?
        3. Better manager?
        4. Better owners?

        My thoughts
        1. No
        2. Yes
        3. No
        4. Yes

    1. I have seen all the ‘best’ players since Pele. Do I believe that Pele was better than Messi? No.

I don’t believe that world class players from two decades ago is better than our players of today. I make one exception for Henry. Clubs have much more knowledge about being a 24/7 athlete today than two decades ago. People involved with top athletes have more knowledge and most likely a degree from the University. I believe that knowledge is the fuel in most modern societies.

We had some of the best players that ever have played in the league, but they should probably have won the league more than three times.

In my opinion Wenger was a better manager than Arteta, but Wenger had David Dein. He was influential in five league titles and probably the key to our success between 1989 to 2004. Arteta is still relatively young and my opinion about his status might change during the next decade.

I was born in 1961 in a privilege society, but I am not nostalgic trying to convince myself that it was generally better before. Something was better but most parameters tells me that almost everything is better nowadays. I have four kids and all of them have reached my level or above which is perfect 😍

      1. disagree with that
There are players in that team who are head and shoulders above this team

where as there is no one in this team who you could say is miles better then the Invincibles …maybe the keeper

        1. That’s your opinion, but very difficult to get a valid answer. Well, there are players from the great Arsenal team meaning some of the current players are better and I agree.

                1. I would say that the overall quality of our defence is better now. Bergkamp is one of my favourite players, but he had his best season in 1997-98 and before the invincible.

  13. Bergkamp ,Vieria ,pires, cole, Campbell ,Lauren overmars off the top of my head ,today’s players are better ?
    Cmon …..

    1. All the players mentioned were great, Liam Brady too. But watch the overall quality of the teams and the pace of their game. Those players with their quality from the past wouldn’t have competitive today.

Why is almost all world records in modern sports from the last decade? Because the athletes was better in the past?

          1. Impressing, how many are from the last decade? Did I say they don’t exist? Do I believe they will be replaced, absolutely.

  14. It can be hard to compare different era’s, but I look at it this way. Any given era had their exceptional players of the time.

And today’s era is the same in that respect. But I will say to those who don’t think that the players of years gone by wouldn’t be able to cope these days with the pace of the game.

I say that’s absolute rubbish. Think about it, they would have the same up-to date training facility’s that the players enjoy today. They would play on carpets compared to years ago, when they played on quagmires of pitches’.

Given this scenario, they’d adapt just like todays players do. I never saw the great Jimmy Greaves play live, but I’ve seen a fare few clips of him running through on goal, rounding the keeper and scoring, and he did that on those pitches I referred to earlier.

If he played in this era, he’d have an absolute field day. So I personally think anyone who thinks that players of old wouldn’t adapt to todays game are wide of the mark.

    1. Agree Derek – my only issue would be the degree of contact and I wonder how the likes of Peter Storey,Billy McCoullogh etc etc would fare in today’s micromanaged var football?

      1. Ken1945,

I hear you regards Peter Storey and Billy McCullough. But I believe they to would have adapted, they would have had to. Otherwise their careers wouldn’t have lasted very long in the modern game.

  15. Why is almost all world records in modern sports from the last decade? Because the athletes were better in the past? Do you believe that it works different for football players? Please show me some valid evidence.

    1. Yes, we can talk about almost everything but we don’t need to agree on everything 👍

Arsenal has a great history which I find very interesting, but generally I’m more focused on the future and everything that can be improved. That’s my perspective and how I have been living.

      1. so you don’t agree that our current strikers are not as good as Henry or Bergkamp
you don’t agree that no one on our left is as good as Pires ?
        that’s mental lol

        1. Here’s my view: Our current team focus more on team strength while the invisibles focus more on individual brilliance. The invisibles had brilliant individuals like Henry, Bergkamp, Viera and the likes. But the current team strength lies in what they can do as a group. So, if am to compare both teams as a group:
Gk: The current team by some margin
Defense: The current team defense is the best in the world right now same can’t be said of the invisibles.
Midfield: The current group of midfielders is recognized as one of the best in the world right now so they edge it if only by depths.
Attack: The invisibles by many miles.

  16. There are probably four from our team today who could make it into that classic squad: Raya, Saliba, Gabriel & Rice. I’ve not seen enough of Bruno to form an opinion.
Says a ton for players/manager/coaching from a different era.

  17. Didrik plehn,

Regards you’re question about the recent records that have been set in the past decade, well that’s pretty obvious to me.

The training facility’s are better, the tracks they run on are better, the athletes diets are better. Even the trainers they run in are better. All that has a knock on effect as far as I can see.

And I will stick to my aforementioned belief in an earlier post, that given all the improvements I’ve talked about, athletes of years ago would be just as good today.

Just a side note regards the breaking of track records. I must say I don’t like the fact that the athletes who are trying to break these track records are now getting a helping hand with lights on the side of track.

In my opinion that’s not right. Nothing wrong with pace makers, that’s human help. But I can’t help but feel that artificial help in breaking said track records doesn’t sit right with me. Am I the only one who feels this way?.

How ironic, that me talking about the improvements in facility’s today would then go on and rant about something up-to date regards the lights on the side of the track. But that’s one so called improvement that isn’t an improvement in my opinion.

Rant over, Oh I do go on don’t I. 😂🤣👍

      1. Jax,

For athletes that are trying to break the record for said race, they normally have a couple of fellow athletes that act as pace maker’s to keep the lap times on track so to speak.

Now I notice that while pacemakers are used, the lights are used for the athlete to also keep up with, which has the same reason to keep the athlete on track for said record breaking attempt.

But for me this doesn’t sit right, all those records that were set previously were by human means, i.e. with the help of fellow humans.

For me, artificial help demeans the said record that is broken.

I hope I’ve explained it well to you.👍

    1. Good morning Derek, I agree with much of what you’re saying regarding improvements and various technological advancements. However, I also believe that men/women athletes themselves have also improved physically overall but not only because of their improved technology (resulting from mental improvements). I believe this has been case through much if not all of human history and will likely always be the case going forward.

      1. Good morning Bruised Banana,

I to agree with you’re opinion. Humans evolve and all that, but I just think that from a sporting perspective players or athletes or whatever sport really would have adapted to said era with all the advances that are made today.

But I do have you right regards the men/women athletes have also improved physically overall. Something that’s been aided by better diets I would hasten to add.

Good talking to you as always. 👍
