Arsenal favourites to sign Jonny Evans – but who would buy Theo Walcott?

There was much speculation in the summer that both Arsenal and Man City were very keen on signing the West Brom captain Jonny Evans, and it looks like these rumours are surfacing again. There is no doubt that Arsenal need to reinforce their faltering defence with Laurent Koscielny and Nacho Monreal getting on in years, and Per Mertesacker retiring at the season’s end.

According to the bookie Betstars, Arsenal are favourites to sign the ex-Man United star. BetStars spokesman Ian Marmion said: “Jonny Evans is a player who is expected to be in high demand in the upcoming transfer window, with a number of clubs setting their sights on the experienced Premier League defender.

“Arsenal are the 15/8 favourites to sign the Northern Ireland international after being knocked back by West Brom last summer.

“Arsene Wenger will be looking to add defensive reinforcements to his squad in January and the Baggies man is rumoured to be at the top of his wish-list.

“However, the Gunners will face tough competition from their Premier League rivals Man City who are also interested in recruiting the former Manchester United defender.”

I would think that the Gunners need Evans more than City at the moment, but it would be a desperate move by Arsene Wenger if he went for the 29 year-old, especially as he will not come cheap….

The other big rumour this morning is that Wenger has told Theo Walcott that he can leave in January if he can get an acceptable offer, with West Ham and his old club Southampton said to be interested. Walcott simply can’t get anywhere near the Arsenal first team now and if he still harbours any hope of getting in the England team for the World Cup he will need to move straight away. But are those clubs are willing to match his extraordinary wages that he gets from Arsenal…
