Arsenal hijacks second Tottenham transfer within a week

Arsenal are set to continue their ambitious summer transfer activity, with Piero Hincapie reportedly close to becoming the club’s next signing. The move comes as part of a window that has already been viewed as both exciting and successful for Mikel Arteta’s side, with the club determined to strengthen further before the deadline.

Talks to bring the Bayer Leverkusen defender to north London have advanced in the past few hours, and Arsenal appear to be on the verge of hijacking another Tottenham pursuit. Only last week Spurs were in discussions to secure Eberechi Eze, but the player ultimately chose to join Arsenal instead, bolstering their attacking options.

Arsenal Step Ahead of Tottenham

According to Football Insider, Tottenham began negotiations with Leverkusen after Hincapie expressed his wish to leave. The proposal involved an initial loan move with an obligation to buy at the end of the season. Progress was being made as the Ecuadorian centre-back made clear his desire to play in the Premier League, a competition he has admired and wished to experience.

However, the dynamics shifted when Arsenal entered the race. With FC Porto continuing to push for Jakub Kiwior, the Gunners turned their attention to Hincapie as a possible replacement. The defender has now indicated that he prefers a move to the Emirates, giving Arsenal the advantage in finalising the transfer.

Strengthening the Defence

Arsenal’s transfer strategy this summer has been both ambitious and costly, with significant investment already committed. The addition of Hincapie would stretch spending even further, but the club appear intent on making the most of this window to assemble a squad capable of competing at the highest level.

Hincapie’s versatility and defensive qualities make him an attractive option for Arteta, particularly as the club considers allowing Kiwior to depart. His arrival would provide depth and competition in central defence while ensuring the squad remains strong enough to cope with the demands of both domestic and European campaigns.

While the final details are yet to be completed, the move is viewed as a strategic step to ensure Arsenal are well prepared for the season ahead. If secured, Hincapie will have the opportunity to prove himself in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and to establish himself as a key figure in Arsenal’s evolving project.

  1. Would be another really good signing in a window of great ones. If everything goes to plan we would be upgrading on Kiwior and Zinchenko as Hincapie can cover both LCB and LB. Selling squad players at the right time for good money is something we have been terrible at compared to Liverpool and City so Kiwior would be a step in the right direction.

  2. I never thought I’d say this, but we are spending like drunken sailors this transfer window. Sure looks like the ownership is now not just looking to assure UCL qualification. I know very little about this guy. Is he worth his €60m release clause or anything close to it given what we already have available even without Kiwior?

    1. Or they might be thinking Liverpool, Chelsea and City will spend so we better to keep us in top 4
Remember 15 million net spend in 3 windows so I’m not going to say well done for doing what they should be doing
Imagine if they had done this last summer ?

      1. Were all the players available last summer Dan?
Was Edu capable of getting these transfers across the line?
Did the club decide to wait for Berta and his reputation as a a top negotiater?
Would we still have caught Liverpool?

Why dwell on what might have been, rather than concentrating on what’s happening this summer?

            1. Didn’t say I was worried , we just can’t change it
              Never forget though
Buying a striker a year too late doesn’t make it okay
That’s like a Chef getting a restaurant shut down , now want a round of applause because a year later he’s washed his hands before cooking lol

      2. Well we must have spent some money at some point. Something like 900 mill net spend under Arteta. A 300 mil loan from the owner and in the top two net spenders in the prem. And in the top 3 in the world under Arteta. Not including any Saudi pro league rubbish.

        1. Yeah to get us back into the Champions League
Go look at our spending the years we were in it
After the disaster of the Super League and taking us to 8th , you damn right a Billionaire should invest

          1. We have to invest inside European limits and premier league limits. We can no just throw money at it every window? I think the owners have more than thrown money at the job. And I dont get this top 4 only reason. It make no sense. The owners have invested massive ammounts of money, more than most.

              1. What has 2008 got to do with now? We are a completely different club, in a completely different place? With a completely different set up.

                1. Because that’s when he first joined the board and you claimed he’s thrown massive money at it
So you have to look at his whole time at Arsenal , not just this summer to make that statement lol

                  1. You also have to look at the debts he took over, including the aftermath of building the Emirates, trying to compete with the likes of city115 chelsea and manure regarding players salaries and transfer fees, backroom staff and changes, the coronavirus costs etc etc.

There is no doubt that Mr Kronkie has changed direction since the debacle of the super league incident and we must also remember the loss of CL and then European football revenue.
With Josh Kronkie now part of the strategic decision making group, it is patently obvious that the club is on a different course.

                    1. Ken, its obvious to the willing, we are a totally different club to 2008. Even in ownership. 2008 Kronke didn’t own Arsenal outright. Since he has he has ploughed money in. Anyone who doubts that, needs a reality check.

      3. There is that, but all three of those clubs have far smaller net spends this summer than Arsenal – who have easily the biggest net spend of any EPL club so far.

    2. I don’t think, and never have thought, that the owners were looking to UCL qualification alone. If you own a big EPL club then that’s what you expect, most to the time anyway. It’s certainly important, but not as an end in itself. As I’ve said before in other posts, the defining factor against that “common” background is, has to be, trophies. There’s nothing else really (no prizes for the club with the biggest revenue or the largest stadium).

Apart from the euphoria about bringing in all these players, the concerning point about this is that expenditure of the size Arsenal is undertaking is not sustainable. Around £250m so far, possibly another £50m+ for Hincapie if the reports are true. Where is it actually coming from, and in what form?

      1. Go look at how rich we are
Net spend 15 million in last 3 windows
        Money is there
Plus they might say go big now but take it easy next summer

        1. Arsenal has spent £250m on transfers this summer so far. That’s net spend. Tell me, Dan, where do you think that money comes from?

          1. The money the club makes
            UEFA revenue
            TV contracts
            Match Day revenue
            Merchandise
            Sponsorship

We are charged some of the most expensive tickets in Europe
The more a customer pays , the more they expect something to show for money
            That’s nothing new

            1. No. You’re talking about the usual sources of revenue not where the money we’re spending now comes from.

The last figures available (2023-24) showed record revenue for Arsenal of some £600m (all those things you’ve mentioned contributing) BUT they made an overall LOSS in that year and haven’t made a profit for six years now. As in all businesses, money in is not the only factor, it’s money out as well.

There are only three sources money can come from:

              1) Profit
              2) Increased revenue. For that to happen Arsenal would have to increase their revenue from 2023-24 to 2024-25 from £600m to £850m – which would be the world-shattering record for a football club in a single season.
              3) The owners provide it as a loan (as they’ve done before for Arsenal).

It clearly isn’t (1). Option (2) may contribute, but not in a huge way. Arsenal’s revenue could increase by, £25m-30m or so last year. So, it’s Option (3) in my opinion. Now, there’s nothing wrong with that if you don’t mind Arsenal being loaded with debt. The club currently has about £500m overall debt.

              1. Yet what are the FFP rules mate
Based on a 3 year cycle
Bearing In mind we are at year 1 of that near cycle

                1. They are rolling years, not set 3 year periods. And you have to “manage” them. Manage being the operative word. I am sorry Dan you reasoning is not based on anything but your own. How many other clubs have spent as much as us in the last 5 years? I do not get your argument at all and frankly never will. We have spent more than City, more than Liverpool and more than nearly every other team. To try and beat them to the league. How much more should we have spent? How much more coukd we have spent?

      2. Yet city115 manure and chelsea did it Bertie and I’m sure the Kronkie’s and their accountants will tread very carefully and stay within the rules.
As for trophies, I’ve always maintained that our club has been more than just that and, over the years, have watched as we always put stability above trophies.
We only have to go back to the 60’s 70’s and early 80’s to remember that trophies were not considered the be all and end all, even though we were known as the football equivalent of the Bank of England.
I realise I’m probably in the minority regarding this, but, after watching the likes of Birmingham win trophies and then decline to the third tier level of English football, the uninterrupted 100 years of top
level football enjoyed by The Arsenal is something no other club can boast about.

I’m not suggesting that the Kroenke’s aren’t following the rules. I’m suggesting that expenditure of the size we’ve seen this summer is unsustainable.

We’ll have to disagree as to trophies in the context of the modern game where clubs are often owed by countries, large corporations or millionaires. That’s very different to the ownership model that you’re referring to (and which I too remember at Arsenal, all the way back to the Hill-Woods etc.).

The point I’m making is that in the context of 2025, not 1965, 1975, or even 1985, things are different. Between those competing ownership models we have now, it’s the point of difference that counts – and the biggest point of difference is not qualification for the UCL, revenue, stadium size etc. but silverware.

          1. Why would we expect the same amount of money to be spent season after season though?
Are we expecting to sign another keeper, a midfielder, a striker etc etc?
The vast majority of our players are now on long term contracts and we have the likes of Skelly, Nwaneri and Dowman knocking on the door.
This squad is now very strong, it has versatility and depth, so why would we need to spend again?

By the way, I read your comments about selling players and the only ones I would let go, are those who were out on loan last season. I hope that clears up my thoughts on that subject?

            1. Ken1945

I’ve no idea what Arsenal will spend in future seasons or what players they may need for a variety of possible reasons (I wouldn’t wish it on anyone but, injury, wanting to leave etc., who knows). It could be a question of final “pump priming” this season, I just don’t know.

As to selling, yes I agree completely with you. I got the impression, wrongly from what you’ve just posted, that you were against sales full stop because of injuries so far and the potential for others. I do think that sales are important though (if Berta can achieve them).

  3. This one has the ability to run up and down the left flank and put in good crosses like Ben White. He’s aggressive and good in 1v1 defending, though I suspect he’ll pick a lot of cards because of his style. He has great recovery pace too, just like Mosquera. Good passer as well, particularly balls over the top.

I think this signing can allow Eze to thrive on the left wing because he can stay wide, allowing Eze to tuck inside where he’s most comfortable.

He scores headers too so he’d be an excellent addition to Set Piece FC.

    1. Onyango, wouldn’t this player also be the player that Martinelli has needed?
I don’t know enough about him myself, but it seems our owners are certainly backing Arteta and Berta and those who were questioning their commitment to the club have gone very quite.

          1. Reggie, as A PL player and a Brazilian International, who has the backing of Mikel Arteta and is valued around the £60 million mark, you questioning his footballing brain, tells me you you need one yourself old friend.

            1. Ken, its his decision making that is his downfall. He makes the wrong decisions too often. And don’t lower yourself by getting personal. Keep it too opinion?

              1. Reggie, I’m sorry, but I’ll defend our players when fans get personal about them.
You didn’t address my points about his career to date and, if it’s his decision making that’s his only downfall, then why isn’t he being coached to improve it?

    2. Thanks for your opinions on what he offers. Assuming he does have great recovery pace, that may be the main reason MA is particularly interested in him.
