Is This Swiss Defender the Solution for Arsenal’s Defensive Problems?
If reports from the Daily Star are to be believed, the Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is set to make a move for the FC Basel defender Fabian Schar once the transfer window reopens in January. The Swiss international is said to be priced at around £10millon but with his contract at the club set to expire this summer, a cut-price deal is very much possible.
Arsenal’s lack of defensive depth has been constantly exposed and Wenger has been forced to go into games with a makeshift defence, even having to play Nacho Monreal at centre-back. Having lost Thomas Vermaelen and Bacary Sagna and having loaned out Carl Jenkinson, Wenger has brought in only Mathieu Debuchy and Callum Chambers, leaving the Gunners with a shortage of at least one defender, which has escalated to a shortage of two as a result of Debuchy’s long-term absence.
While the Frenchman has been hesitant to spend in the winter market in the past, I really feel that this story has a fair bit of credibility to it considering that the squad is desperately in need of defensive options. In addition, Schar will be available for quite a bargain as a result of his expiring contract, which will also encourage Basel to cash in on their star centre-back while they still can.
Coming to the player, Fabian Schar is 22-year-old ball-playing central defender with good physical presence and prowess in the air. He has been making quite a name for himself since bursting on the scene for the Swiss club and will be looking to take the next big step in his career. Here’s hoping that Wenger will bring him to the Emirates once the January transfer window is open.
