Arsenal must be careful with too many new signings this summer

There is a natural eagerness in Arsenal fans for the club to undergo a major overhaul this summer following a couple of seasons of some serious underperforming by the squad, however, one should be careful for what one wishes because the grass is not always greener on the other side.

Most Gooners could easily name you 6-7 players that they want to be offloaded, I could do the same and obviously, we all want top class players brought in as their replacements but changing so many players in one fell swoop is a dangerous undertaking.

For starters, players need time to bed in and some players will simply not adapt to the English game and all that creates an unbalanced and unstable team.

Players need to know each other’s game and of course learn the style of the manager and that does not happen overnight, you need competitive games to get it right and do we really want to be doing that in the first weeks of the Premier League?

Bringing in two or three players in and expecting them to adapt straight away is hard enough but doing that with five or six players is nigh on impossible.

It did not happen overnight with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City or Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, they understood that too many changes too quickly makes the rebuilding job much harder.

Remember, this Arsenal team was just one point from the top-four and reached the Europa League final, they are not a useless team, no, they are not at the top echelons any more but they are not on the level of the likes of Wolves and Everton either.

Unai Emery was always going to need at least two seasons to implement his vision, some of his new signings were also going to need at least a couple of seasons to adapt to the Premier League and while there are some players that have to be sold because they are not Arsenal quality, there are other players that will be better next season.

Two or three strategic quality signings is all that is needed this summer, maybe one in January but not many more, there is a core in the team of at least seven players that this Arsenal team can be built around, Leno, Holding, Bellerin, Guendouzi, Torreira, Aubameyang and Lacazette, there are youngsters that can be brought in like Nelson, Nketiah, Bielik and Wilock and existing players that could yet be valuable like Maitland-Niles and Mavropanos.

Bringing in a couple of top-class proven players with experience could easily compliment what we already have without the drastic need of major surgery to the squad.

  1. Get Fraser. He’s accustomed to PL, proved himself in the league, and we need a winger badly.

    1. He could be very useful due to his high work rate, but I don’t think Arsenal would purchase him if his price tag is still around 30 M

They would most likely get a more marketable attacker like Carrasco

  2. Touche. Everton signed too many new players in one transfer window and it lowered their position in EPL table instead of increasing it. Not that Arsenal are willing to spend as much as what Everton spent though

However, the players that have been playing badly in three consecutive seasons must be replaced as soon as possible. Their inconsistent performances, lousy work ethics and predictable movements in the field are like a cancer that can easily infect their new teammates

It is difficult to sell them with good prices, but we cannot let them destroy the team spirit again in the upcoming season. If no club is interested, Arsenal should prioritize their own graduates over the underperforming stars

  3. We should not just add average players to what we have.
    We should:
    1. sell several players (Mustafi, Ozil, Mkhitaryan, Xhaka, Jenkinson)
    2. Purchase a few quality players (especially CB, Central midfielders, Wingers)
    3. Use our Young players ie Guendouzi,Holding, Smith-Rowe,Reiss-nelson, Bielik, Niles
    instead of loaning out

  4. Building a team around Holding… Jesus Christ have we gotten used to mediocrity and 5th or 6th spot fast.

    1. I agree with you. Holding could be good, but there is a way to go. Love the ephitet. Many say Diogenes was barking mad. Actually he showed us how to pull the rug from under the smug.

  5. Arsenal buying players is never the solution but rather someone selling his stake in the Club. Stan needs to sell and that happens, arsenal will remain a stress factor in your lives besides your broken marriages and relationships.

  6. Diogenes, please do not use my Lord’s name in vain. Have some respect. If you classify Rob holding as average then there’s a lot you need to learn about football.

    1. building your team around a defender that hasn’t even had one complete season of being above average is beyond stupid. As of right now, Holding is still just a player with potential, and not even world class potential, just potential to be really good. And he could be no good once he comes back from this injury.

  7. Proven players like smith-Rowe, Bielik & Nelson should be given chance to fight and earn their places and we concetrate on our pourus defence and goalkeeper

  8. @Reyes, exactly the point, talking against signing many players, who have we signed, have we been able to sell anyone of our unwanted players? None. Everton didn’t perform badly last season, they soundly beat us and Man.U,they will blend in the incoming season watch out. Spurs did it few seasons and after that they have consistently been in the EPL top four and have gone beyond ECL’s second round unlike Arsenal,Gazidis and Wenger that will sluggishly go after players that are not commanding shirts in their respective clubs and still pay high fees for them. It’s not always how much you have but how good and efficient are the people vested with the job of getting us the right players at affordable price. We are yet to see the outgoings and the incomings before you can start saying too many players.

  9. Thanks RSH, I really do not factor this great hype about Rob Holding that has not been able to play full season since we signed him up from Bolton Wanderers. I don’t wish him bad to tell the truth, but pray that we shall not be having another injury prone player and you are talking of building the team around him. Both him and Mavro’s services were missed for the better part of last season due to injury. Let’s watch it, urgent decisions need to be taken concerning our defense, RW, LW and midfield seriously.

  10. This is one stupid article. We should sign who we need, and not some generalised idea. We need a few players. If we can get them get them goodf, if not fair enough. Are you suggesting we saction ourselves. At the moment Ozil, Mustafi, Elneny, Xhaka, Kolasinac, Mkhitaryan, Jenkinson, Lichtsteiner, Welbeck, Ramsey and Suarez either need to go or be replaced, and you say two or three players are enough. In our circumstances what you say does not add up. Please unite supporters with good articles.

Also West Ham signed Fornals. Glad you are awake Kroenke.
