Arsenal have reportedly opened talks with Bayer Leverkusen over a possible move for England international Jarell Quansah as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his defensive options.
The Gunners’ need for reinforcements has become increasingly important with William Saliba and Jurrien Timber currently sidelined, and Quansah’s ability to operate both centrally and on the right could make him an attractive option.
Arsenal in talks for Quansah
According to Sky Sports, Arsenal are now in discussions with Bayer Leverkusen over a potential deal for the 23-year-old.
Quansah only moved to Germany from Liverpool last summer, but enjoyed an impressive first campaign with Leverkusen, making 44 appearances before earning a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for this summer’s World Cup.
He made three appearances at the tournament before returning to Leverkusen following an extended break.
However, convincing the Bundesliga club to sell could prove difficult. Leverkusen are reportedly reluctant to lose the defender after being impressed by both his performances and the way he has adapted to life in Germany.
Quansah also has four years remaining on his contract, meaning Arsenal would likely have to pay considerably more than the fee Leverkusen paid Liverpool last summer.
Interestingly, Liverpool also retain a buy-back clause as part of the deal that took their former academy defender to Germany.
Quansah’s versatility could appeal to Arteta
One of the obvious attractions for Arsenal is Quansah’s versatility.
Primarily a centre-back, he featured on the right side of a back three for Leverkusen last season and is also capable of providing cover at right-back.
That could be particularly useful for Arteta given Arsenal’s current injury problems. Saliba’s absence leaves the Gunners needing additional central defensive cover, while Timber continues his recovery from the groin problem that has kept him largely sidelined since March.
At just 23, with Premier League, Bundesliga and now World Cup experience behind him, Quansah would offer Arsenal a player capable of covering more than one position while still having plenty of room to develop.
The biggest obstacle could simply be persuading Leverkusen to part with a player they only signed a year ago.

Potential solution! Let’s bring in a young natural RB and use White, Timber or Mosquera at RCB.Timber played in that position for Ajax on numerous occasions.

I think the issue is Timber and Saliba are out and Calafori and White are injury prone
so that leaves you very short
because no a 16 year old won’t be starting as a CB in the Prem next Friday lol
So you think that every time our 1 for 1 cover is used, we should buy another player? to cover the cover? White and Mosquera are cover? The ONLY reason, we should be looking at buying another cover, is IF Saliba is going to be out for a period until after January. I do not know how long he will be out, it is a rest period. He hasn’t had surgery as far as I know, but if he is only going to be out for a couple of months, I wonder 1, why someone would come knowing that, and 2, why spend 60 mil for 2 months cover for cover. As has been stated Rice can play there also and we have cover for Rice, now. It depends on, whether Saliba is going to be out for many months.

So buying a player, that is not as good as Saliba is the answer. I think we have to be better than that.

so look at it more if Saliba and Timber are out do you have two players for each position

So my point is, buying someone who is not as good, that does not solve the problem. It creates another. If Saliba is going to be out for over 4 months, buy someone who is better than Quansah, that is my problem. I do not rate him.
The only other fly in the ointment is Timber, because he could also be cover for Saliba, BUT.

I don’t get why we are even going for defender again.. arteta and the club seem to like getting easy defensive players but they cannot get an elite left winger. Our defense is strong already, adding marley salmon to it.
Our attack at the other hand is not even one of the best in the league. We will struggle to create chances and score goals like we did last season and i cannot have another last season.

While I hear what you’re saying regards competing for places. I do see that the current Centre Backs that are there must wonder why the need for cover for Saliba.
Wouldn’t they have assumed it would be one of them that would cover, after all what are they doing at the club if that’s not the case.
It does send out a strange message to them all, apparently you’re not good enough to cover Saliba, so we’ll go out and buy another defender instead.

In pre season Mosquera has not done enough to essentially say I expect to start every week till Saliba is back
He certainly didn’t do enough in the CL Final to say you don’t need back up for White
So all that is happening is Arsenal are looking to bring in competition
If he plays well on Sunday and next Friday and trains amazing the cream will rise to the top
If Calafori and White complained I would show both their injury records and say cab you tell me with confidence that from now till December you can start every few days with zero muscle issues

Its looking more and more like Konza. Which for me, is better that many that have been mentioned. Would have liked Pubil but I think because Konza is English, he is a better fit.
