Arsenal Player ratings against Southampton – man of the match gets an 8

Arsenal has finally won an away league game under Mikel Arteta and even more importantly, we have our first win since the restart.

Overall, this was an efficient team performance, and it is hard to point out someone who put a foot wrong in the match.

We had our work cut out in this game, but we have to commend the players for keeping their cool and earning the win.

Arsenal Players Ratings

Emiliano Martinez – 7
Martinez was called upon to make at least one important save and I have to admit that his save to deny Shane Long an equaliser is one of the best you’d see this season. He looked an assured hand in goal.

Bellerin – 6
The Spaniard is still not back to his brilliant best. However, he did well in this game coming up against a threat like Nathan Redmond.

Mustafi – 6
Mustafi has continued his revival under Mikel, and this was another fine performance from him.
The German did get himself booked for a clumsy challenge, but he didn’t allow that to affect his game. He’s improving.

Holding – 7
Holding looks to be coming back to his best form and he might keep David Luiz on the bench for some time.
The Englishman was composed, challenged for every aerial ball, and read situations well at the back. He is an asset to the Gunners.

Tierney – 6
Tierney is showing why Mikel Arteta has been looking forward to playing him with a fine performance like this. He did well at the back even though he had to play more in central defence. He also delivered a killer ball to Aubameyang, showing his quality as an attacking full-back. But he came off injured before 90 minutes.

Ceballos – 5
This wasn’t the best performance that Ceballos would deliver for Arsenal. He struggled to influence the game from the middle and he was a little too cautious as well.

Xhaka – 7
A fine performance from our former captain and on this evidence, he probably would have made the difference if he had played our last game. His long-range passing and urgency on the ball were key.

Saka – 7
Ever-improving Saka was another top performer today, playing a left-sided midfield role, he frequently got into the left-wing which allowed Aubameyang to move centrally. Made some fine deliveries as well and almost set up Lacazette for a late goal.

Aubameyang – 7
He gave an energetic display and did everything to win the game, including chasing down the opposition and also trying to set up his teammates to score on numerous occasions instead of going it alone. He also missed a good chance in the first half after shooting against the crossbar.

Pepe – 5
Pepe gave another uninspiring performance. Apart from setting up Eddie Nketiah for one fine chance, he did little in terms of helping the team get goals and his poor crossing let him down in this game yet again.

Nketiah – 8
Nketiah is getting better, and it is now clearer to see why Arteta loves him this much. The Englishman pressed the Southampton goal so well that he got his goal through an error.

Subs
Lacazette – 6
His shot was rebounded for Arsenal’s second goal and he made himself available for the last pass on many occasions after he came on.

Kolasinac – 5
Did his job including helping the Gunners protect their lead as a team.

Maitland-Niles -5
Had little influence in the game as well, but he pressed and made sure Southampton didn’t get a way back into the game.

Willock – 6
Got into the right position and got Arsenal’s second goal. He didn’t do much either on the wing but gave the club an option to keep possession when he came on.

Manager

Arteta – 8
Got his tactics, team selection and substitutions spot on. No complaints.

  1. I thought Holding had a very fine game but was disappointed by the contributions of Pepe and Ceballos.

  2. I like how commanding Emi is in the box. More commanding than Leno I’d have to say. Hope he keeps up the performances. Outside of that, Holding looked good, Xhaka was an improvement over Guendouzi, and Bellerin was actually solid defensively. Nketiah cannot be our No.9 next season tho, and Pepe needs to wake up. Zero influence from him today

    1. Martinez is a very good gk and should keep playing

few years back…he played and kept consecutive clean sheets

      hes tall and commanding indeed

  3. I don’t agree with 6 for Bellerin as his performance was overall really poor. Both him and Ceballos couldn’t pass the ball to each other most of the time.

But when Niles entered we saw some improvement over there.

Holding was really solid and I’m happy to see both of our CB’s improving. Even though Mustafi made some mistakes but overall he was doing good.

I feel sad for seeing Auba not scoring but Nkeitah was really unstoppable in this match, he showed that he deserves a chance over Laca and we all saw how Laca was trying to prove that he still got it and he tried to score. Willock, although I can’t see him doing well most of the time but that goal was enough.

Arteta was great with his selections on this match, I was expecting Gandouzi in the middle instead of POOR Ceballos but now I think he has some good options for the next match.

    Let’s wait for the FA!

  4. Bellerin was shocking a total liability, 6 is an outrage. Martinez was my MOM. Tierney did a good job with saka. Pepe Ceballos and xhaka were poor. Xhaka gave the ball away 12 times and got caught in possession too many times. Holding did ok as did mustaffi against a poor Southampton it has to be said. We are very poor at setting up chances and we dont look like winning the ball back when attacked.

  5. Not bad ratings, but Bellerin was terrible! Constantly passed them the ball or got caught in possession. I would give him a 2.

  6. Good win. I hope we can finish this season on a high and make shrewd decisions in the transfer window for a change. Here’s to hoping for an awesome next season. COYG!!

  7. Good game, Pepe wing wasn’t used much, so he couldn’t get too much involved, I think it’s part of the coach tactics, in the formation, Saka seems to be the joker. Good win overall, I dont know why people feel Nketia can’t lead our attack, his work rate is good and he is improving fast, based on current form, he is better than lacca and AUBA seems to be enjoying his game on the left so, the team looks balanced

    1. the team is setup to attack a the left flank (between either Kola/Tierney/Saka/Auba) and swings to right only when we’re out of room

we don’t start from the right simply because 1) opposing team puts 2 defenders on pepe any time and 2) bellerin doesn’t have the attacking ability of saka / tierney / kola

  8. We got 2 goals but i am more happy with the defensive performance. The defence was good but overall this was not a solid performance because Southampton had their chances and their share of possession.
Bellerin,Ceballos and Pepe has to improve and must say that bellerin is not good in that inverted role…..

We still need to improve on many areas.
Hope we can get some wins in a row
    COYG

  9. After two weeks of turmoil, finally some positives to build upon
Clean sheet with Mustafi and Xhaka on the pitch, good, let this boost their morale
Clean sheet for Emi, happy for the big man, hope we do not look for an unconvincing back up, either Claudio Bravo or Emi.
Mikel did wisely by omitting Guendozi after his verbal speech, good to see the gaffer taking down bad behavior.
Eddie and Joe, scoring, nice to have a goal finally from a midfield player.
Days are numbered for the senior players – Laca and Ozil.
And finally a win before the Sheff game, relief for Mikel, feel good for him too. Play your best 11, let the critics make noise, we need wins.

  10. Holding was my man of the match. Calm and assured, he was so much required after the Louis tantrums. Pepe, Belarin and Ceballos need improvement, although Pepe may not be that much involved due to the tactical formation. Great to see the confidence of Emy. So much for the victory after two disappointments. Sheff Utd. next. Up the Gunners!

  11. Holding looked calm and assured to me and my man of the match. Xhaka and of course Martinez played very well too but I was disappointed with Bellerin and Ceballos. Very noticeable that with Guendozy not playing there were far fewer passes backwards.

  12. I like Martinez, he looks to release the ball quickly. We need to try and hit teams on the break sometimes

  13. Bellerin is finished. He’s been here for almost a decade and can’t even pass a ball……amazingly, he has forgotten the basic in football.

  14. Am I the only one that noticed we tend to win matches when guendozy is not in the starting line up ? I also want Luiz to be drop I would prefer holding anytime

  15. For once the defence was solid throughout the whole game which is a plus. Holding definitely MOTM. Bellerin can’t defend, can’t pass or cross a ball and gives the ball away too often, a 3 for me. Ceballos, apart from his debut has been ordinary holds up the play with too many sideways passes, a 4 for me. A good result though.
