Many Arsenal fans now think that the centre back position is finally in good shape at the club, with Arsene Wenger signing the versatile and talented Calum Chambers from Southampton last summer and then completing the January transfer of Gabriel from Villarreal.
But this latest Arsenal transfer rumour reported by Metro suggests that the manager is either not entirely satisfied or is planning for the future. It could well be the latter as the player in question, Joe Gomez, is only 17-years old and is still in his first season with the first team at the Championship club Charlton Athletic.
Despite the Spanish sounding surname, Gomez is English and has been a regular part of the England international set up at under 16, under 17 and under 18 levels. He was included in the team of the tournament for the Euro under 17 championships last year and his performances at centre back for club and country have drawn strong comparisons with Rio Ferdinand.
The report claims that Wenger has had Arsenal scouts watching the young defender, who also plays at right back, closely this season ahead of a possible summer transfer move. However, we saw what happened to Carl Jenkinson when we signed him from the same club as a promising youngster. If Gomez was unlikely to get much first team action with the Gunners, would it not be better to do a deal with Charlton but let him stay, play and hone his talents?
