Arsenal must believe! Spurs and Leicester fixtures keep title door open

Arsenal fans were left frustrated one again at the weekend when yet another good Premier League side failed to stop the league leaders Leicester City from continuing their remarkable run of results. Claudio Ranieri and his players have ridden their luck a few times recently but they keep coming out of games with three points and unless they start to drop a few soon then anything Arsenal can do will not be enough to save our Premier League trophy hopes.

But Arsene Wenger and the players have not given up on the title and looking at the respective run ins shown in a Metro report of the three challengers, Arsenal must believe we have a chance. Let’s be optimistic, or downright delusional depending on your point of view, and say that Arsenal win our remaining games and finish on 79 points.

That would mean that Leicester would need 11 points to guarantee they finished above us and 10 points to finish level and let goal difference decide it. We are only two goals behind them now with a game in hand so if we caught them you would assume that Arsenal would have the better goal difference, so really they need 11 points from six games, or three wins and two draws. Likely? Maybe but look at the games they have left.

Sunderland away, West Ham at home, Swansea at home, Man United away, Everton at home and Chelsea away on the final day. Is it really too much to think they could lose two and draw one of these? The first two are tough enough with Sunderland scrapping for every point and in the last seven games they have beaten Man United and drawn five including one against Liverpool at Anfield. And Leicester have not managed to beat any of the top six clubs at home yet so West Ham will be a real test.

The spuds also have some difficult fixtures ahead, including Stoke and Chelsea away, and they will be just one point ahead if we win our game in hand, but they do have a much better goal difference so you would assume their 79 points would beat ours. But if they dropped just two from a possible 18 points then Arsenal would win with the perfect finish.

Are you starting to believe?

  1. they will only lose points against man united and chelsea(maybe)
    No reason to get overoptimistic.
If the results go our way we might finish second

    1. Actually the only match I can see Leicester lose points is against West Ham.

Which is disheartening since we are playing them on Saturday!

  2. Leicester will probably win their remaining games 1-0.

And that’s the way Claudio likes it 🙂

  3. I think Leicester and Spurs will both finish with less than 79 points. Sadly, I think we will too but if we are still in it on the last day of the season, I like our chances.

    1. I’ll give it two more matchdays, then if nothing changes we are out. I can see Tottenham finishing below us but not sure with leicester.

    1. They are now, regular quarter finalists. But for some reason they needed penalties v PSV this year and Leverkusen last year to get to this stage. Well done for giving Barcelona a good game so far.

Regular title challengers as well now. They’ve broken in on the two big teams and now its the the big three. They done it in a completely different way though.

  4. somehow the opposition always gets red carded whenever Barca is losing… rooting for Atleti

  5. If Leicester lose away to Sunderland and if we beat west ham then I will let myself slip into to the delusional state of beliving that we can still win the league. ???

    1. i have a feeling that if they somehow lose one they might come under pressure and lose a few

  6. will stop watching Barca matches as results are inevitable… opposition red card and Barca win

  7. I don’t see how Leicester can for ever drive their luck. Soon they will lose points and when they do panic will set in and they will lose more points. Emotions aside, I believe it is not possible for any team in EPL to win fifteen games in a row. With hindsight I see Leicester losing a couple of games and drawing others. The likely scenario is that once they lose they will be brought back to earth and start to act irrationally the way Liverpool did two seasons ago. Games are won on psychology and once a team loses the psychological battle it is finished. As to whether Arsenal can sustain their good run that is another matter. If Arsenal keep their good run going there is every chance to win the title. On paper, Arsenal has the easier games compared to its rivals. However games are won on the pitch not on paper; hence Arsenal has to take advantage of this fact by delivering on the pitch. If Arsenal wins 6 of its remaining 7 games and draws one that will make 77 points which is a realistic target. This could be enough to win the title if Leicester flounders as it is likely to do. Let all of us fans stand behind our team and see how the season pans out.
