Why is Wenger so relaxed about rival transfers?

Arsene Wenger seems to be the calmest man connected with Arsenal Football Club at the minute. While us fans are in the usual summer routine of waiting anxiously for the Frenchman to make some big waves in the transfer market and hopefully wading through a daily mountain of Arsenal transfer rumours, Wenger has got his feet up and is sipping a cocktail or two.

It does not help our nerves when our Premier League rivals are starting to throw their money around like it is going out of fashion but Le Prof seemed very relaxed as he spoke about it after arriving with the Arsenal squad in Singapore, as reported by Arsenal.com.

Noting Raheem Sterling´s transfer from Liverpool to Man City he said, “It looked a done deal for a while, because Sterling said he wanted to leave. For me Sterling is a top-class player. It’s a good buy for Man City. An expensive one, but they can afford it. Personally I like him. I didn’t make a bid because he plays in an area where we have plenty of players. We have Welbeck, Walcott, Chamberlain. Sanchez, Wilshere can play there, Gnabry. He’s a wide player basically, or behind the striker.”

On Man United´s transfer business he said, “We knew they wouldn’t be happy with finishing outside the top three, they will respond. They have made some interesting signings. They came out of the season thinking they have to rebuild their midfield, and they did it by buying two important players – Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin. They are two top-class players. One who is now coming up to the top level – Schneiderlin, and one who has done it all. It will be interesting to see how they mix with the other players.”

He does not sound too concerned to me and he did not even bother talking about the many moves already made by Liverpool. He did, however, suggest that we might still see a couple more players joining the Gunners before the transfer window closes.

As another report on the Arsenal website reveals though, Wenger is happy with his options and clearly believes that keeping the form from last season going is as important, if not more, than bringing new faces in.

He said, “We have a good level of cohesion and at the moment what is very important to our squad and myself is to see how we can move forward again.

“We feel that we moved forward last season but it’s not enough to think that’s okay, we have to move forward again. It’s much more important about the team now rather than finding the right player.

“I believe we have the quality and it’s now how much we can be stronger together.”

Is Wenger right to be so relaxed about things? Does he already know that we have something special coming up?

      1. Maybe he wouldnt be so relax if fans gave him a ultimatum. Which is either he sign some wc players or we wont buy any expensive tickets we do a complete boycot. Then You would see a reaction.

        1. Oh common ! He ‘s already brought in 3 world class players 3 seasons in a row. Are you always going to cry about not having the flavour of the month ?

  1. Wenger is relaxed because it is utterly useless to worry constantly about what other clubs are doing. It is even counter-productive. Wenger has no control over other clubs.

The best course of action is to just calmly work on making any signings needed to improve Arsenal. Let us hope THAT is what Wenger is doing because that is the only thing that makes sense.

    1. Precisely, not sure what the author expects of Wenger, is he supposed to come out to the media and say he’s concerned with the business of our rivals? How pathetic would that sound.

Nothing we can do that affects their business, so focus on ourselves and get right what we need and we will be FINE.

  2. I really think we can pull the Benzema deal off!!!
We just need to be real patient here, and I think Mr Wenger is doing just that at the moment. No need to rush! With Rafa keen to play either Bale or CR7 at CF, Benzema could be forced to move on and that might just pave the way for us !

    1. I’m sorry but I DON’T want Benzema to be an Arsenal player because he’s already competing with Giroud in the French national team. Imagine the awkwardness in the dressing room, we don’t need that at this moment

  3. I keep reading Sterling transfer rumors and they all promote him as LPool’s best player.

I strongly disagree. Coutinho and Mignolet were the 2 biggest players from LPool last season. Sterling is way down on the list. Without those 2 players LPool would not have won any games in the 2nd half of their season. And in many of those games Sterling was actually very disappointing.

(He does meet the home-grown criteria however).

    1. Classic lowballing of a player with a conflicted media image. Sterling was their best player last year, both statistically and if you cared to watch them numerous times. The ones who reject this are bitter and merely trying to console themselves at losing their best player by suggesting he’s not all that. Plus this whole wanting a move scenario provokes the usual guff from fans who come out with “he’s not all that” etc. OK then….

Regardless of the fee involved Man City will be a better side with Sterling in the 11.

      1. @Champagne Charlie
        Exactly…
If his price were lower, I wouldn’t mind having him in our squad…On song, the kid is deadly…

        1. Totally agree. To pick up on your choice of wording, he is also precisely that….a kid….the potential is ridiculous. He’s producing a seriously high level of performance for a 20 year old in this league.

We rave about Ox quite rightly, yet Sterling is a level above in terms of output at present (not opinion), so how someone can try and reduce him to ‘just a homegrown talent’ is absurd. Far too often is a player lambasted when a fee is extortionate, it’s not his fault. As I said, he merely represents a first team upgrade for Manchester City….the numbers pale in insignificance. Because we wouldn’t pay that for him in no way diminishes his ability. Great signing for City.

          Sterling-De Bruyne-Silva
          Aguero

          Tasty…

          1. Sterlin-de bruyne-silva
            Aguero …..TASTY???

            Walcot-Ozil-Sanchez
Giroud( or better striker )……hmmm so TASTY

          2. 1. Ox is an AM, Sterling is a winger, Ox is a more complete player, as soon as he adds goals he will be better in every aspect.

            2. Gotze was playing at the highest level at the age of 19 but wasn’t worth more than 30m at the time.

      2. I just analyze what I SEEEEEE. I could not care less what the media says. The media actually says Sterling is the 2nd coming of Christ.

And Sterling looked terrible by the end of last season when he did not have Sturridge or Suarez around him.

Sorry if that bursts your bubble.

    2. Agreed re Coutinho (excellent player) and Sterling (meh), but Mignolet? I’m surprised to see anyone commenting positively about him, he seems one of the weakest, least confident, most error-prone keepers in the division.

    1. Vidal? We have Ramsey, Cazorla, Wilshere, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Rosicky, all of whom can play that box-to-box role. And judging from his headless chicken performance in the CL Final, Vidal would certainly not be the best we have even if we did recruit him.

But yes, I agree that we need to add something new to our attacking unit. I haven’t seen much of Lacazette but he certainly looks interesting. Would prefer Benzema though – don’t know if there really is a chance of that.

  4. Wenger is relaxed because:
    (1) the board will never sack him
    (2) finish in top 4 and bills get paid
    (3) chics dig underdogs; so aim accordingly
    (4) all the pressure is on LVG, Brenda, Pellagrini, and that awful taint Jose.

No doubt Wenger wants to win, it’s naive to think otherwise. I believe we have a solid and deep squad, but not a great squad; only a few Great players. We could use a striker sure, but if Wenger thinks he can alter his tactics to suit each individual game, and rotate players we can be a real unpredictable threat.
However a striker, DM and Chec ain’t putting a dent in the Barca machine. For that you need these transfers:

    (1) Beetlejuice , free transfer if you repeat his name Thrice
    (2) the flash
    (3) godzilla
Barca is THE Apex predator for now, and you gotta beat the champ if you want to be the champ.
Keep it real, and keep it sexy

    1. Seriously though, consistency and health is what we need the most. Picture this, an in form squad with Ozil and Jack pinging ball off each other with 1-2’s, with Sanchez, Walcott, Ramsey, and Ox making runs. Very dangerous if they’re all on same wavelength. Otherwise it’s all leisurely and grandmotherly with sideways passing. Tactics will prove if the payers or manager is the problem. We know what each player does best, so don’t play out of position.

      1. Yup, agreed. The front three of Barca is amazing and we would start as underdogs against them, but on a given day I reckon we could overcome them, same for Real, Bayern, PSG and Chelsea.

  5. Wenger always looks to bring in young players to improve the team in the future. With that in mid I think we will sign Lacazette and Draxler.

    1. PS buy them cheep and let them develop into a team of world class players. But not for sale this time around.

  6. It doesn’t matter what other clubs are doing. What matters is what we are doing, and right now that is not enough. Our strikers are too low quality to get anything better than 4th right now. We’ve known for several seasons now that Giroud is not the answer, and only the deluded Gooners who think Walcott’s two matches upfront prove anything think that he is good enough.

  7. It was Alexis Sanchez who saved Arsenal last season. Has Wenger forgotten already? It takes big signings to make a difference. He needs to add another top class signing (or two!) to make a difference this season. Remember Arsenal were closer to 5th place last year than they were to 1st place. Will Wenger again be satisfied to fight for 4th place again?

  8. Basically, this happened.

    ‘Man United signed Schweinsteiger’.

Wenger: ‘Mikel Arteta has just signed a new contract’.

    1. Schweinsteiger is old and injury prone and also we have better CM and plenty of them as well
like Ramsey, Cazorla, Wilshere. We just need 1 more CDM and CF.

      1. “Schweini is old”… Names Cazorla as a counter argument…

Ramsey and Wilshere better than Schweinsteiger? Don’t go saying that outside of an Arsenal forum pal.

  9. If Wenger doesnt sign new quality striker and CDM we wont win BPL or UCL. I expect Ozil and
Sanchez to demand transfer request if that happens next season. Wenger please dont screw us.
    Sign Benzema and Krychowiak.

    1. I love the fact that most fans think that if we sign a striker and a DM the title will be handed to us.

  10. Cuz we are in good shape to win 4th place? It’s not Southampton or Spurs are signing super stars so relax.

  11. FEARING FOR THE WORST! What if the squad stays the same?? One AW must change tactics and he must make substitutes before his trademark 75mins. This can prevent burning out and the bench players feel wanted as well. Secondly, no his favourite players playing out of position. Games are many for rotations to effect since the players know each other quite well (bonus that Arsenal can boast about) coz they hv been together for a while. I also believe Cech could add them more confidence to make things happen the same way Coqueline did. BUT a new striker (better marksman than what we hv) at least

  12. Wenger is idling for what reason i dont know. People are above him so he could very well have his hands tied. The fact is that Arsenal led the 2013/14 season till January and then fell apart and in 2014/15 flipped the script and performed well at the end. The fact is the team needs a proficient striker and an EQUALLY capable backup for for coq.. Simple..
If that is dont and it doesnt work out fine, u tried. But to not address the obvious problem and lose the league because of it is just hurtful.
