Arsenal rocked by striker injury – Time for Giroud?

Arsenal fans will be hoping that this latest injury blow is not the start of the club’s seemingly constant problems on that front, which has seen the Gunners hit by crisis after crisis that I, for one, believe has cost us at least one Premier League title.

At least this time the player in question, Lucas Perez, is not currently one of the first players in the Arsenal starting line-up, although Arsene Wenger has been talking about the Spaniard and suggesting that the summer signing might be ready to feature a lot more.

Lucas was just starting to show the sort of form that caused the Frenchman to complete his transfer from La Liga club Deportivo La Coruna, so the ankle injury he picked up in the EFL cup win over Reading on Tuesday must be a huge blow to him, with the Evening Standard reporting that the Spaniard could be set for several weeks on the sidelines.

While this injury to Lucas may not affect the manager’s plans too much for this weekend’s Premier League trip to Sunderland, it might do for the weeks to come, so one player who could benefit from this is our big French centre forward Olivier Giroud, as he is now the only real alternative to the Chilean star Alexis Sanchez.

It is bad news for Lucas and Arsenal, but will this help Giroud to get back into the first team on a regular basis?

Bob.

    1. Any injury is. Squad depth is vital and all it takes now is a giroud or Sanchez injury and we would be without a backup. We would not be able to rotate and that also causes injuries due to lack of rest.

  1. Bad news indeed, but I’m confident that between Sanchez and Giroud we’ll be okay. If anything, Theo can slot in as an emergency striker when/if needed. However, it is imperative that we have Lucas back ahead of a very busy holiday schedule, so physios better do their job right and have him fit and ready to go before that.

    1. I also just remembered that we have Akpom and Welbeck out until after New Year’s. And earlier this morning I heard that Theo is “not well” (whatever that means), and might not make the trip to Sunderland this week. Fingers crossed our forwards, and everyone else stay healthy, because we really can’t afford any more injuries, especially in the striker department.

    1. @Twig
Gravenberch intended to do Lucas harm. He knew Lucas was becoming a handful to deal with…Can’t blame AFC training methods on this one…

  2. Alexis continues upfront, Giroud can come in 2nd half against teams that park d bus n Welbz ll be back soon
