Arsenal ruined Ozil’s awesome record breaking

Even if Arsenal had come away from the Hawthorns with a point (and yes Santi Cazorla and Joel Campbell I am looking at you) then all the talk among Arsenal fans and the football media today would not have been so much about what went wrong against West Brom and whether this is the start of another crumble for the Gunners.

A point would have taken Arsenal back above Manchester United and although Leicester City would still have kept us off the top of the table, it would not have looked so bad. And in that case the amazing achievement of our German play maker Mesut Ozil would surely have got more coverage in the press.

Just as the Leicester City and England striker Jamie Vardy was matching the Premier League record of old horse face Ruud van Nistelrooy by scoring in a 10th consecutive league game, Ozil was setting a record of his own by providing the assist for the opening goal by Olivier Giroud.

That makes it seven EPL games in a row where the king of the assist has done what he does best. He was previously tied on six with the former Gunner Cesc Fabregas even though the Spaniard´s was separated by a few years and the distance from the Emirates to Stamford Bridge. Never mind Cesc at least you have a title to defend…oh wait.

Anyway I think that Ozil’s feat deserves more credit and if he carries on like this, with 11 EPL assists to his name already this season, Ozil will surely beat the record of 20 currently held by our very own Thierry Henry in 2002/03. But can he repeat Henry’s achievement of helping Arsenal to become champions of England?
