Arsenal still working to bring in Deadline Day defender?

Arsenal have been linked with defensive additions all month and we are are now into the final six hours of the transfer window, but will we land one?

Our club has most strongly been linked with the possible arrival of Jonny Evans this month, and he appears to be the most likely acquisition as the deadline draws nearer.

The Northern Ireland international captain is believed to be open to a move, with his club trying to stand firm on their asking price. Arsenal are believed to have made offers to sign Evans this month, but have so far failed to meet the expectations of the Baggies, and there is reports claiming that we are expecting the asking price to come down as the windows nears it’s close.

David Luiz has also been linked with a possible move across London today, but that door looks to have closed following Olivier Giroud’s move in the opposite direction, with negotiations between the clubs believed to have already taken place.

Luiz has fallen out of favour in West London this term, and you wouldn’t think that the Blues would refuse to talk about his potential exit given their options, and I wouldn’t completely rule out a late bid for him if we fail in our move for Evans.

Sky Sports just reported live that Arsenal have shown a late interest in Evans, having failed with previous attempts to bring him in this month, and we are believed to be trying to re-open negotiations for the West Brom defender.

The centre-back could well become available for a measly £3 Million in the summer, subject to his club falling foul of relegation to the Championship, and this factor is believed to have been in the thoughts of the Gunners who have been keen to steal a march in negotiations.

Could Arsenal bring Evans in today? Would the Baggies captain be a better suit to our defence than Luiz?

  1. No to both of them. WBA is at the bottom of the table, this could mean Evans’ performance is not that good, similar to Mustafi case when Arsenal bought him from a bottom table Valencia.

Luiz cannot even compete with the other Chelsea defenders. We don’t want another William Gallas or Silvestre and I still cannot forget his performance when Brazil were trashed by the Germans in the previous World Cup.

There would be good central defenders available at good price, at the end of season, Lazio’s De Vrij and Atletico Madrid’s Gimenez.

    1. Johnny evans is better than all the central defenders we have at the moment..
Get him at all cost , let holding go on loan and gain experience

      1. Yes addition of a defender will guarantee us the Leagues or CL or both next season!Still too many deluded idiots here.

    2. gallas was outstanding…

luiz is aggressive and has the height

the main issue is if he is able to maintain his form

      1. I’d take him as a pure DM, not CB for sure, and that’s the problem as he has Arsenal defender written all over him.

        1. Arsenal fans hated him even if he managed to give them 15-20 goals a season from wing position, very sad!

  2. I personally think we are missing a DM or two
If you play a front 4 of
    Lacca
    Auba. Ozil. Miki

It means the players behind nd need to be very combative or defensive
    Only Wilshire is all Hart

Elneny Xhaka Ramsey are very average technically and Ramsey is selfish

We need a battling DM scoring two and conceding 3 is no use

      1. Not really, Ramsey gives more than most of them yet Wilshere is all heart. Ramsey is also better defensively than Wilshere yet Wilshere is not named as lacking. Add to that the end product differences it really makes no sense at all. Shows you what an odd dribble and one two can achieve in fooling the masses.

        1. Ramsey is everything what is wrong with british football. All legs but no brain. Wilshere has the brain therefor him being so unique as an englishmen. Ramsey needs to be sold off to evertorton or something. Just imagine us ignoring fabregas bec of him. jesus christ. mistakes over mistakes have brought us into this current situation.

          1. Sorry, the both are from a generation of garrulous British players. (The quieter ones at the Spurs are better.)

So, now we are getting a total foreign team like City, barring one two Brits. That is the way back to the top four, I am afraid.

  3. We do not want Evans bog standard defend
We spend 110 m on two srikers then 2m and offer 20m for defenders wtf

  4. Kev, Resource, where are you? Oh yes been found out haven’t you?!
Anyway, I told you all Auba would be getting the number 14 shirt Monday and so it is!

  5. Perhaps all the slagging off of Kroenke might stop now for a while.
He has sanctioned all the spending in this window.
Yes, money has been recouped and wages saved but has also given Ozil a massive pay rise and new contract.
All of this has been sorted out by the new backroom staff with Gazidis (who also deserves a break) orchestrating the new regime.
Wenger has had nowt to do with it apart from being kept in the loop.
He’s nowt to do with signings, contracts, pay scales, nothing, yadda, ziltch! So let’s lay off the owner, the CEO and everyone else.
    Wenger Out asap.

  6. Still cannot believe we’re not trying to sign DM! We have ZERO DMs in the squad. It must be a position that Wenger just doesn’t believe in.

    1. Don’t think he believes in defending at all and the shame is if we spent on quality Dm and Cb
We would compete and fans would find their voice again

    2. I’d put money on Song signing on for the rest of the year if he impresses in training. Happened a few years ago with Flaming and wasn’t a total disaster…

    3. AMN
I know Wenger has played him out of position but hey, if it was where they played for Wenger then Rambo is a winger XD
I will also admit AMN can’t be relied upon right now plus 1 DM isn’t enough, esp when it is an inexperienced kid, we need someone else still.

  7. No. That is not happening. As Arsenal has valued Evans at very low price.

We never spend big money on defense. A problem In our priorities which keep costing us season after season. What is the point of Auba and co scoring 100+ goals per season if we let in another 100 ?

  8. Excellent rebuild window.
We kept the best and sold the rest.
Yes 5 years late but at least
the rebuild has begun in earnest.
    Gone.
    Chamberlain 40m Gibbs 7m Gabriel 9m
    Walcott 20m Coquelin 12m Giroud 18m
    Akpom Debuchy free (going) free
    Cazorla (retired injured) free
    Sanchez (swap for Mkh)
    Summer.
Perez? Mertz Koz? (archilles) Jenkinson? Cech? Wellbeck?
Loss on Gabriel Gibbs Cazorla Debuchy = 15m.
    Sales 106m Salaries saved 37m. Losses 15m
    Total 128m
IN Auba 55m. Mavropanos 3m Mkh (Sanchez swap) resign Ozil.
    Salaries 24m Total. 82m
11 out. 3 in. Ozil resigned.
    Net profit 46m.
A significant window in the Transformation phase.
So many mediocre players finally shipped out.
Top player signed. Mkh decent Sanchez replacement.
Still need top DM and CB but all in all a satisfactory window.
We are gonna hammer Everton and Spurs and City 🙂

    1. Agree with this completely.

All major uncertainty taken out by getting rid of Sanchez and signing up Ozil. Face saved by not letting Sanchez go for free in a few months and in top of that getting an established player like Mkhi.

Following that up with PEA as well as starting the clear out. Sure there are a couple of players that may be an issue soon contract wise but they are easily replaceable. All our stars are now on long term deals.

      1. I also agree with Barryglik. The worry is still the the DM and CB positions maybe AW should try AMN in the CB role, there’s nothing to lose because Xhaka cannot defend if his life depended on it.

Aubameyang will frighten the life out of some PL defences. his pace is unbelievable. But maybe the best bit of business is re-signing Ozil? £350k a week or £17.5m a year for 3 years= £52.5m in total, an absolute bargain considering we would have lost him for nothing in the summer.

    2. Definitely. Still some rebuilding work to do (DMF, CB, GK, & Manager) but we have plenty of time till the beginning of next season.

I’m a happy Gooner tonight. It’s been a long time since I said that. It feels like things are really changing now, and that next season will be one to look forward to.

    3. Spot on! This was by far the best transfer window for Arsenal in last decade, with 2 WC players in, 1 WC player out, several mediocre or squad players (Giroud) shipped out, and probably new contracts for two best players this season (or two out of three best)
I really can’t understand all the negativity, moaning about Walcott, Coquelin, Giroud… This all had to happen in order for the club to go forward, problem is that it didn’t happen 2-3 seasons ago. Job is far from over, and this time I hope it will be just a beginning with new transfer policy and new team for transfers in place. Finally someone is identifying and signing WC players. Hope we will continue signing two WC players in prime years per transfer window. DC and DMC must be targeted and signed in the summer, as well as good and reliable DR to compete with Bellerin, and long term successor for Cech. We can make some money selling players not up to the task or not suited to our style of play, Xhaka for sure, Elneny and Welbeck if good offers come and maybe Ramsey if we can get premium price for him. Squad should be filled with promising young players from our academy, we have AMN instead of Elneny, Nelson for Welbeck, Willock and Sheaf for Ramsey…
It would be ideal to have Ancelotti next season, but I don’t think it will happen. I am pretty sure Wenger will not go till his contract expires and next season will be his last chance. He had several “last” chances till now, but for the first time things are finally moving in the right direction and optimism is back. We should all give our full support to Arsenal for the remainder of the season
      COYG

  9. Arsenal will never spend with the likes of City or Manure in the transfer game and I applaud the additions of Miki and Auba but why on God’s green earth wouldn’t Wenger and Co. test Roma’ s resolve with a $35M bid for Manolas?

Although they did spend a pretty penny on acquiring Auba, a large chunk of that was financed by the $50+M made by the sales of Theo, Coquelin and Giroud. I genuinely believe the cash reserves are there to bid on Manolas, Gimenez(Atletico) or Tah(Bayern L)

    The difference currently….

    City—Laporte $57M
    Pool—VVD $75M
    Arsenal——-?

    1. Because our recent defensive
      purchases have not worked out.
      We have been burnt too
      often of late.
Jenkinson 5 years, struggled. Injured. loaned. injured now back.
Debuchy 16 m hardly played gone on a free.
Chambers 16m struggled , out on loan came back still struggling.
VVD played for Celtic+ Southampton yet bought for 75m.
Gabriel played for Villareal and Arsenal yet sold for just 9m.
Gibbs 9 years at club, never established sold for 7m
Mustafi cost 41m in last minute buy. Still strugling.
Club losing Mertz retiring free and Koz (archilles) free in summer.
Club has incurred 70m loss in back line players.
So for now the policy is to buy cheap Holding 2m,
Mavropanos 3m+ offer 12m for Evans.
Waiting for Varane to leave Madrid for 4mill 🙂

      1. Arsenals last quality CB signing was Boss way back when?, none of the recent acquisitions should be mentioned in the same futbol sentence as VVD or Manolas.

It would help if Arsene would let Bould implement some form of defensive strategy or gameplan.

        Dare to dream @ AFC

  10. Arsenal: No Luiz. Evans looks unlikely as WBA want £20m, no negotiations. In talks with Roma over Manolas. They want £30m for him but AFC have unofficially suggested £25m with a complicated payment structure #afc #asroma

Better than Evans and if they only want £30 million… Get him now before he is snatched up by some other EPL team and his price jumps to £75 million…

AFC should have the money and the player is quality while about to hit his prime for age.

  11. What happened to interest in Nzonzi? The guy is tall and strong and could work well behind our LMAO line of attack.. coz Xhaka is one slow CM who offers less in defense, the rest are just midfielders (average)

    1. Funny how I’ll celebrate when Walcott and Giroud score for their new teams (except when they play Arsenal) but punch the wall when Sanchez scores.

    1. It won’t last though. Walcott has always had his good spells, but I don’t think he’ll be challenging for the title with Everton anytime soon!

  12. There is this rhetorical question ask by arsenal fans frequently on this site. How many of our players will make first 11 in other (big) clubs in EPL?. I guess we are about to find out now that we have Giroud in Chelsea, Ox in pool, Alexis in Manu, Theo in Everton, Gibbs In Wba. There is also a common believe that no serious clubs will buy are players because they s**t. Aside wba, can we really say other clubs on my list don’t have ambition.

    1. I canot belive how shi7 man-u are Sanchezes face says it all ” Confused” HAHA

It should of been 5-0 now but we need a draw

  13. How the heck are Bournemouth 3 up?!
Also sickens me to say it but this is the spurs side that beat RM, damn their slick 🙁 and this is without alderwerld and moura! Oh for a dembele!

    Anyway enough of that nonsense.
Really hope we can snare Manolas tonight a good age and 30m really? Pay it now!

        1. Hahaha. he went for the p as manure style of football is suicide for every player who thinks of himself as a player who loves the sport. Just terrible.

  14. @tas
Top 4 has gone buddy last night saw to that, just enjoy Sanchez staring in disbelief like he did the Bayern game.
Shame it’s spurs but I’m loving MU Jose and Sanchez getting schooled!

    1. @Ronny

I have not heard the fat lady sing yet still a long way away

And yea I’m loving the faces of Sanchez and Jose, and Lucacu WTF is he supose to be doing but not ?

        1. Watching them tonight Jose bought the wrong player he should of gone for Ozil they have no one who is servicing the strikers, it seams each man out for himself that’s Jose’s way and Pogba who

  15. I wonder if Alex Song is going to play any part with us again? He is meant to be training with Arsenal- wonder if they going to do a Flamini- might be worth a go!

  16. Wenger, Mustafi, Xhaka, Iwobi and Eleny for Allegri, Matuidi, Benatia and Howedes

Or at least just Wenger for Allegri

  17. I understand we made a last minute bid to sign Johnny Evans. The bid was £12 million. It’s fairly obvious WBA weren’t going to accept such a low offer so if Wenger really wanted him why not bid say £25 million and get the deal done.
