Arsenal to pay £50m for Icardi? Has Wenger lost it?

Judging by the Arsenal transfer rumours about Gonzalo Higuain that were flying around befor the Argentina international completed his mega money move to the champions of Italy Juventus, I doubt very much whether Arsene Wenger would have paid £50 million or much more for his top striker transfer target, so imagine my surprise when I saw the Daily Star reporting that the Frenchman was ready to offer that amount for Mauro Icardi.

The Inter Milan forward is also an Argentina international but unlike Higuain he almost never plays for them and is not even Arsenal’s second choice, or even third if you count our failed bid to sign Jamioe Vardy from Leicester City. The report claims that Wenger is ready to move for Icardi if the much talked about attempt to persuade Lyon to part with Alexandre Lacazette turns out to be yet another disappointment.

This makes even less sense to me, because if he would prefer to sign the French striker why would he not pay the release clause of less than £50 million and get the player he wants instead of paying more for Icardi? Do the people who make up these stories actually pay any attention to what is going on int the real world?

      1. We need a Striker who is better than Giroud no matter how much it will cost
whether the price is £1m or £100m

  1. What is in Wenger’s mind? Chuba scores Ox scores ..maybe we don’t need mahrez or lacazette…
Plzzzz Wenger don’t do this to us.

    1. Missed the last episode of EPL? Chuba Akpom might be involve only at cup competitions or even loan out to elsewhere. Ox? He might be get injure (again) just after 10 matches. We have only Giroud after Wellbeck season out for injure. Do I have to told you more about Giroud’s conversion chances to goal ratio last season?

  2. Lost it? Isn’t everyone here saying “these are the prices in today’s football”. You put up or shut up. Many years ago I have said these numbers are made by the media fed by the agents craving for the fat commission on the sale. And probably they even pay the rags (in fact for sure they pay them, don’t think anyone has any doubt about) to put these stories in.
Juve paid like 75 mils for Higuain. Is obvious that they will probably make these money back by selling Pogba. Probably to Manure but Real also have the power. Agent does not give a fsck where he go as long as he cashes in 20 mils only in this sale. No way would they buy Higuain for such a price if there wasn’t something in the works. Offloading Mandzukic as well.
I thought Leicester taught everyone a lesson last season. Slapping everyone in their mugs. Among everyone, Arsenal was the only team taking them seriously. Like really seriously. Everyone else (including me) said they wil be exposed but no way, everyone thought these guys are out of steam and got punished for it. Leicester! Spending 10 million for a title. In fact, first three places combined spent less than the fourth team last season. Isn’t that ironic?

  3. Yea Wenger has Lost it…..and may not be able to find it again!

    ¤Icardi @ 50mil
    ¤Lacazette @ 40mil

Now judging by cost advantage…..who’s the cheaper option?

    Wenger is a puzzLe…… A silly one

    1. 50 quid for a 700 mill bacardi !!!
At Tescos a 700 mill spiced rum
is on special for 16 quid.
      Wenger needs to shop local.

  4. Can’t recall the Last time Arsenal got a player from an Italian Outfit……. But we have only managed to send players out ere e.g sczcesny!

    1. Ever since they got burned by the Henry and Vieira deals they will not sell to us. Unless they know it’s a dud for certain I don’t see this changing. Imagine what they must have thought when witnessing those two stallions in their pomp.

  5. Not sure why everyone gets so excited over this rumor. Is there one Arsenal fan out there who seriously believes Wenger would spend 50 million on any striker? This is just media fluff.

It is already unlikely Wenger to increase his pitiful offer for Lacazette enough to close the deal, let alone pay 50 million for Icardi.

    1. I think he’d spend fifty mil, but it’d be on Suarez now I reckon. He’d probably do it for one of the one’s in Germany, Id say he’d give fifty for Aubemayang. Auby would be close to fifty in the old market, and in the old market Wenger would go to thirty five.

      1. He would only offer 50 when he was sure it would not be accepted. Auby should be around 70 million or more if you ask me.

  6. @Bob
Seems the only one’s who’ve lost it are you and anyone else who eats up these stupid rumours…

    1. You should cut him some slack, it’s not going to be easy to write numerous articles each day. At-least here you can read stories you appreciate, as well as rumours, if rumours are not your thing. As well as plenty of comments to read. If someone is complaining about the quality of reading in a comment section, has he missed an opportunity to better that quality.

      1. @trevor
I did cut him some slack. I could have taken a harsher approach, but didn’t.
I only responded to the article how I saw fit. Never knew everyone was expected to be in lockstep here.

  7. I hear Mahrez unfollowed Leicester city on Instagram …….. Fuelling speculations of his move

and i can’t help but think we are setting ourselves up for more Heartaches!

  8. Can’t help but think this seems a bit similar to the Xhaka deal before it went through with the pretty strong links to Kante…
Mahrez, Icardi, Lacazette. If it seems like we have viable options elsewhere whether there’s genuine interest or not it obviously helps with negotiations.
Wenger did the smile again guys… BeIn sports interview. Something is close!!

    1. He gave that smile last season too, the reason he does it is because he knows he can’t even smile without people speculating about it. Id smile too if I knew I couldn’t do it without people putting two and two together, it be harder to keep a straight face.

  9. Inter milan’s new cash rich chinese owners sell their top goalscorer! Sounds unlikely to me.

How come these stories do not mention inters changed financial circumstances.

    1. Because of FFP, even che and city rained it in a little compared to what we were used to seeing. Mau have become the big daddy of spenders once again, funny how mour leaves the former big daddy to join the new big daddy.

Id like to see him with a pl team that has it’s limitations. He can afford all the best attackers which also know how to defend, that’s the secret to his success (top attackers that graft for him).
