Arsenal turned down Jack Wilshere’s request to sign youngster

Max Dowman has remained one of the best players to come out of the Arsenal academy in recent times, but he is not getting as much game time as he would have liked with the senior team.

This has led to him being tipped to leave the Emirates on loan on several occasions, with the youngster potentially benefiting from playing regularly at another club. A move to a top level side or a club operating at a lower level could provide him with valuable experience.

Wilshere Wanted Dowman at Luton

Most clubs send young players out on loan to help them gain regular game time and continue their development. Arsenal have also used that mechanism several times, with Ethan Nwaneri spending this season on loan at Borussia Dortmund.

However, the Gunners never opened the door for Dowman to leave, despite interest in taking the teenager elsewhere. A source told Talk Sport that Jack Wilshere has asked several times for Arsenal to allow him to borrow Dowman for a season.

Wilshere was keen to work with the youngster at Luton Town, where Dowman could potentially have been given a regular role. The attacker has performed well whenever he has played for Arsenal, but a spell at Luton could have provided him with more opportunities to play consistently under Wilshere.

The Luton manager therefore wanted Arsenal to allow him to coach Dowman on loan, believing the youngster could benefit from playing regularly while continuing his development away from the Emirates.

Arsenal Believe Dowman Has a Role to Play

However, the report adds that Arsenal turned down Wilshere’s request to add the youngster to his squad. The Gunners believe Dowman has a role to play in their senior team this season and had already considered him part of their plans during the previous campaign.

That decision means Dowman has remained with Arsenal despite the limited opportunities available to him. The club clearly believes keeping him around the senior squad is important for his development and for their own plans.

For Dowman, the situation means he must continue taking advantage of every opportunity he receives. His performances have shown what he can offer, and Arsenal will hope that giving him further chances can help him develop without needing to send him away on loan.

  1. He needs to be used lightly at this point while he continues to mature mentally. I would think Jack would appreciate not throwing him into the fire just yet. This is the best place for him to develop.

  2. Don’t send Max out on loan, most of our youngsters who went out on loan are no longer with us, he will get enough chances during the 70 odd games we play.

  3. How successful is it for player and club to send a youngster out on loan? I’m sure Wilshere would love to get his hands on Dowman but why would Arsenal let him leave?

Dowman is already showing signs that he doesn’t lack the mental maturity to cope with top level football. He’s not one of those fringe players who the club could do with showcasing to potential suitors. Saka didn’t go out on loan. Neither has Skelly so far who has shown the mental aptitude required to get noticed. He has learned. When the likes of Nwaneri can’t break through at his age then maybe a stint at a strong club abroad is the answer but I don’t think that applies to Dowman – not now anyway

    1. SueP, in my post I wasn’t referring to mental maturity on the pitch so much as off the pitch at a very formative time of his life as a 16 y/o young man. That said, I agree with your comment.

You are absolutely right regarding that. I believe he has a strong family behind him and Arsenal historically have nurtured their youth so it’s a win win situation for Dowman as long as those people do keep him grounded

When you see how fame and fortune has had a devastating effect on Raheem Sterling’s latter career and personal problems relating to nitrous oxide

        1. 👍SueP, you could kind of feel it coming with Raheem. It is such a shame and I wish him well in getting help and hopefully recovery.
