Arsenal U-turn: Arteta Opts to Retain Duo Previously Linked With Summer Exits

So far, Arsenal’s summer transfer window appears to be going according to plan.

While Mikel Arteta has admitted that no window ever goes entirely to plan, this one may be as close as he has experienced.

The Gunners have strengthened across the pitch: a top striker in Viktor Gyökeres, defensive cover in Cristhian Mosquera, midfield additions in Martin Zubimendi and Christian Nørgaard, a winger in Noni Madueke and Goalkeeper Kepa Arizzabalaga. It is the kind of ambitious summer that many Arsenal fans have long hoped for.

Trossard and Zinchenko to stay

The business is not finished, with Eberechi Eze expected to arrive next from Crystal Palace. But alongside arrivals, Arsenal are also expected to sell players to balance their summer spending.

Interestingly, two names previously tipped for departure now appear set to stay.

According to Football Transfers, Leandro Trossard and Oleksandr Zinchenko are no longer expected to leave the club, despite attracting interest from abroad.

Trossard had reportedly drawn interest from both Fenerbahçe and Bayern Munich, while Zinchenko was being tracked by AC Milan and several Premier League sides. Though the pair could have generated respectable transfer fees, Arsenal now look set to keep them both.

Transfer U-turns after key conversations

It is understood that Zinchenko submitted a transfer request earlier in the window, prompting the club to begin looking at left-sided defensive options. However, following conversations with Arteta, the Ukrainian international has now recommitted to the project in north London.

Trossard, meanwhile, is expected to sign a new deal. Contract talks had stalled in recent weeks, but discussions have since resumed and a compromise is now said to be close.

With the Belgian and the Ukrainian set to stay, attention turns to who may still leave the club, with Thomas Partey, Kieran Tierney and Jorginho having already moved on this summer.

Reiss Nelson has also been linked with an exit, though he recently impressed in a pre-season appearance. Could he be staying too?

  1. Not sure that i don’t believe that if an offer came in we would not sell? We need a large chunk coming back into the coffers. How is that going to happen? Not by loaning Nelson and Jesus (although i don’t believe that story either) or selling the likes of Viera or Lakonga etc. Who is going?

    1. Zinchenko can’t be trusted with left back position but can be so good in the mid and wing.He also plays a role as fan and hive tips to his playing mates, Trossard is perfect number eleven and some times a semi number nine.Jesus is plagued with injuries and should go,lukongo should follow and bring in Eze and second striker

  2. If Zinny and Trossard in fact stay, it is unfortunately highly doubtful imo that Eze will be acquired regardless of the costs one way or the other.

      1. He is a great and dynamic player with many skills and can open up a defense like a can of worms. I hope you’re right about us still going for him.

  3. To me let “em all stay cause we are injury prone club when it comes to second half of the season and it’s always rob us of the title !! Pls I stand to be corrected

    1. If all stays, how will Arsenal balance payment, don’t forget financial fair play or ESR

  4. I think this is all speculation by ‘Football Transfers’ as most articles are. My opinion is that they have both seen minutes playing on this tour as being in the ‘shop window’ and I expect at least one of them to be sold, especially if we get Eze.

    1. Yeah I agree, I think this is just tactics to hold their value(/fake media guff) rather than make them sound unwanted. If we get Eze (and possibly another player up front) I just can’t see the logic in keeping Trossard as his value will start to plummet along with his game time. As for Zinchenko, I think he showed last season its a struggle to find a way to put him in a starting 11 given how much our squad has evolved, and the limitations in his game. Calafiori is brilliant but highly injury prone so I wouldn’t be surprised to see Zinchenko leave to make space for Hato, that’d be a smart piece of business for sure.
It makes perfect sense to make Zinchenko, Trossard, Nelson, Hein, Lokonga, Vieira and Jesus available for transfer, surely Berta can get up to £100m for the lot, he’s done a great job so far.

      1. I know they’re rare but a swap deal of £20m and Zinchenko to Ajax in return for Hato would be great for all involved. Zinny is at a point where he wants to lead a team but most of the big European leagues teams would see him as merely depth, whereas at Ajax he could be a leader and his experience could be invaluable to them. And us getting Hato to work at LB and LCB along with Gabriel, Kiwior, Calafiori and MLS would further our defensive brilliance.

          1. Yeah I’ve seen those reports too, I’m just hoping its nothing official as Hato would do great with us, and he’d get to play alongside his idol, Julien Timber. There’s a couple great YT videos analysing how Hato would fit into our system, it’s a perfect match 🙂

  5. Zinny’s current wages are the greatest obstacle. Not many teams can afford. The same with Jesus. Loan to Brazil is possible but the buy side will be difficult to negotiate except AFC is prepared to foot some wage bills after loan period.

  6. Will be interesting to see who’s going to be left out of game day squads and not registered for certain tournaments

    Raya
    Arrizabalaga
    Hein
    Saliba
    Mosquera
    Gabriel
    White
    Timber
    Kiwior
    Zinny
    Calafiori
    Skelly
    Ode
    Norgaard
    Merino
    Zubimendi
    Vieira
    Lokonga
    Rice
    Nwaneri
    Saka
    Jesus
    Matinelli
    Trossard
    Madueke
    Nelson
    Havertz

We need to start selling, can’t keep everyone like some are hoping for

    1. PJ-SA, MLS and EN don’t need to be added to the PL and CL squads because they aren’t 21 yet.

I can see the likes of Hein, Vieira, Lokonga and Nelson leaving, either on loan or being sold.

      1. Yes of course, I forgot about the age limit

I think it will still be very difficult to keep a squad of that size happy

  7. As is often the case with Arsenal, identifying (and adding to the list of) players who won’t be leaving is relatively easy but, as others have said, the priority is identifying those who will leave.

Arsenal needs to sell players. They won’t come anywhere near balancing the books through such sales given their huge – and continuing – expenditure but nevertheless some are going to have to be offloaded. That’s clearly one of Berta’s top priorities so after his excellent record in buying, we’ll see how he does selling.

  8. Selling GJ9 will be good for the books and coffers, Lokonga, Nelson, Viera and perhaps Hein would be good too seeing that Partey, Tierney, Tomiyasu.

  9. In my opinion, it’s a wise idea to keep Trossard and Zinchenko in Arsenal Squad. They are both skillful players who can assist the club a great deal.
    So keep them please
